Moving for a cause
The Cheyenne Schools Foundation hosted its annual Run for #1 5k walk/run on Saturday, Sept. 14, and the community support for our schools was tremendous.
The event saw 175 participants going around Sloan Lake, some taking a leisurely stroll while others raced for the finish. Jerry Rief of Cheyenne took first place, clocking just 19 minutes and 36 seconds.
Proceeds from the race will go to grants benefitting Cheyenne teachers and their classrooms.
Also present at the event were members of the Central High, East High and South High bands and cheer teams. The bands combined for an incredible all-city performance that made for a fantastic display of camaraderie and teamwork between the three triads. Cheerleaders from all three schools lined up to congratulate the participants as they crossed the finish line.
Capturing the magic
Also present at the CSF Run for #1 were fourth-year TV Media students who took the opportunity for a job shadow.
Neal Hushbeck of South High and Taylor Turpin of East High followed Laramie County School District 1 Community Relations Department staff members at the event, seeing what it might be like to use their TV media and videography skills for a career.
Hushbeck filmed the bands as they performed and interviewed one of the participants. Turpin gathered b-roll, hosted a short Facebook Live in which she interviewed cheerleaders and participants, and took a plethora of amazing photos.
The job shadow is a part of their Applications in TV Media class, a fourth-year course that includes opportunities to shadow professionals in various parts of the TV Media career field. Eight TV Media students participated in the job shadow, so keep an eye out for more content from these amazing students!

South High School student excels in American Legion Auxiliary Programs
This summer, Deanna Davis, a senior at South High, participated in the American Legion Auxiliary Girls State and Girls Nation programs. These programs provide hands-on experience in understanding the workings of the federal government.
In June, Davis attended Girls State leadership camp in Cheyenne, where she received training on her responsibilities as an American citizen. During her time there, she was selected as one of Wyoming’s two representatives at Girls Nation.
Girls Nation took place in July in Washington, D.C., where Davis joined students from across the country for a mock Senate session, gaining an in-depth perspective on the national government.
School counselor Justin Roadifer and social studies teacher Erin Lindt supported Davis through her application process for these opportunities.
Parent Updates
Meal plans available
Laramie County School District 1 offers a variety of meal services for students based on need. The district is committed to providing equitable access to nutritious food for all students.
If assistance is needed, families with students attending East and Central Triad schools are encouraged to fill out LCSD1’s free and reduced-price meal application. This ensures eligible students can receive free or reduced-priced meals. Families that qualify for reduced priced meals will receive free meals under the district’s Reduced to Free Program. Applications are available on the district website, www.laramie1.org, or can be submitted online at https://linqconnect.com.
This year, LCSD1’s South Triad schools qualified to participate in the USDA’s Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) program, which provides free meals for all students at the following schools: Afflerbach, Arp, Bain, Cole, Fairview, Goins, Hebard, Johnson, Lebhart, Rossman, South, Sunrise and Triumph. These families do not need to fill out the free or reduced-price application. The program is designed to support schools in high-need areas that meet certain program requirements.
Schools qualify based on student/family participation in direct certification programs, such as Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF).
For more information, call Nutrition Services at 771-2440.
LCSD1 hosts iPad community buyback event
Laramie County School District 1 is partnering again with Secured Tech Solutions to sell the district’s used iPads to the community. The sale opened on Thursday, Sept. 19 and will close at 9 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 30.
The district’s goal is to offer iPads at a discounted price to help benefit the technology needs in our community. The devices were collected after the end of summer school, and this is the last opportunity for community members to purchase them.
A majority of the proceeds from this sale will be returned to LCSD1 to help sustain the student 1:1 device program. This program allows students to stay up to date with the latest technology for the classroom.
There is a purchase limit of 10 iPads per household and all devices come with a limited 30-day warranty. Chargers, cases and other accessories will also be available to purchase.
Purchases must be made using a debit or credit card at this secure link: https://securedtechsolutions.com/cbb/laramie-device-buyback-sale/.
