Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are very excited to have our annual Veterans Day visit assembly at Munson Elementary on Monday, November 11! Veterans (who are also family members and friends of Munson students) will be treated to a special, private meal together, after which they will speak to our students about their time in the military. Students will be able to ask questions of our guests and find out more about the different branches of the military and the veterans' experiences. Before the veterans share with us, 11th District Court of Appeals Administrative Judge John Eklund (a former Munson Elementary parent and grandparent) will lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance. We can't wait to welcome these very important guests to Munson and to learn more about what makes Veterans Day so meaningful. Thank you to all of the Munson families who are participating in our Veterans Week activities, and thank you to Mrs. Romans and the Munson Veterans Day Committee for all of your hard work planning these events!

First graders had a VERY important Election Day this week - students cast their vote for their favorite cookie, choosing between Oreos and chocolate chip cookies! The class talked about the voting process, got to "register" and receive ID cards showing their eligibility to vote, cast their ballots and even got stickers after voting! (Oreos were the winner!)

Welcome Back from Chardon Health Services

Additionally, cases of pneumonia have been unusually high in elementary schools across the country. Please monitor your children closely, especially if they are showing any respiratory symptoms, and encourage your children to use good hygiene practices both at home and at school to prevent the spread of ALL illnesses!

Topper Tickets are part of Munson's PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports) system. They are given to students as a special recognition when they demonstrate a Topper Trait - Taking Responsibility, Offering Kindness, and Persevering. Each day, we randomly select a few Topper Ticket winners from each grade level to receive a prize! Check the newsletter each week for their names!

The Annual Update must be completed by ALL Chardon Local Schools households every year, for every student, even if there are no changes. This ensures that we can contact you promptly in case of an emergency, allows you to pay for student meals and school fees online, and gives you access to important forms and documents, including report cards. We are planning our Veterans Day (Week!) activities for the week of November 11-15. There will be many opportunities for students and families to participate in honoring our country's veterans.

Penny Wars

This is one of our most popular Veterans Day (week) activities, and it starts MONDAY (Nov. 11)!!!!

• What: Students can bring in CHANGE OR PAPER MONEY to donate. (Make sure you ALWAYS ask permission before bringing money to school!) Put pennies in your OWN class's jar, and put silver coins and paper money into OTHER classes' jars to cancel out their pennies. The class with the highest total at the end of the week will win! Rolled coins count for DOUBLE points!
• When: Every morning we will call for donations to be brought to the recess hallway. You can bring a little bit every day, or make one BIG donation at once! Classes may use different strategies to try to win!
• Why: We donate the funds generated by Penny Wars to the Geauga County Veterans Food Pantry and other local veterans groups!

Veterans Visit

Thank you to the veterans who volunteered to come in and share some of their military experiences with us. We are eagerly awaiting their visit to Munson on the 11th!

Veterans Wall of Honor

All students have the opportunity to honor a special veteran in their lives by filling out a little information about them with you at home, and sharing a picture they draw or a copy of a photograph of that person. These will be displayed in our hallway to honor our family heroes during the week. Please let your teacher know if you need additional forms to fill out - the more, the merrier!

Stockings for Soldiers

Thank you to everyone who requested stockings! They were sent home last week and should be filled and returned to school on Monday, November 18. Please do not send them in on any other day; we do not have room to store them. Thank you for your generosity!

Activity Sheets

Veteran themed activity sheets will come home for your child to do with you and return to school for a small prize.

Field of Flags

We reached our fundraising goal of $500!!! Thank you for your generous donations to support Disabled American Veterans. We will be planting our 2024 Field of Flags on Monday, November 11! Watch for it when you drive past the school!

Join Santa, Mrs. Puterbaugh, and the Cleveland Monsters for a fun and festive night! On December 7, local school choirs are invited to sing along to holiday songs during the 1st and 2nd intermissions of the Cleveland Monsters hockey game at 7pm. Tickets are purchased via SeatGeek online - PLEASE DO NOT SEND MONEY TO SCHOOL. Also note, this event is NOT required and does NOT take the place of the 2nd and 3rd grade winter concert.

Please save the dates for our music performances this year! Second and third grade will perform on Tuesday, December 10 at 6pm (3rd grade) and 7:15pm (2nd grade). First grade will perform on Tuesday, April 15 at 7:15pm. All performances will be held in the Park Elementary School auditorium. Many more details will be shared as the dates get closer!

Thank you to everyone who donated to our SOCK-tober drive! Munson collected 685 pairs of socks to donate to Geauga County Job & Family Services! We more than doubled our goal, and the third grade won a popcorn party for donating the most pairs. Thank you again for helping Munson show kindness!

Chardon Schools' summer school is tentatively scheduled for June 2-20, 2025. The 3rd grade summer AIR test (for students that did not achieve the required passing score during the school year) will be June 23-27, 2025.

Title I, Part A of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA) provides students who qualify with extra instructional services and activities beyond classroom instruction. Click HERE for more information about the Title I program, and reach out to the school with any questions.

The PTO provides dinner for the teachers and staff at Munson on conference nights. This year, we will provide Chipotle on November 7, Mangia Mangia on November 14, and Jersey Mike's on November 21. We are looking for parents to donate snacks, desserts, and drinks. There is also a slot to sign up to donate money towards purchasing meals, if you prefer!
