LISD School Newsletter
A Note from Dr. Martin
Hello LISD Families.
Welcome back to school! The staff has been working all week to prepare for our first day with students on Monday, August 26. Thanks to everyone who came to Back-to-School Night yesterday evening. It was wonderful to see you.
If you are a new family to the school, we are pleased to tell you that we send a school newsletter every Friday. The newsletter will always contain a message from me, important information and updates, upcoming events and games, and fabulous photos of kids engaging in school and extracurricular activities.
Since I am the principal for both elementary and secondary, I have offices in both buildings...and I don't spend a whole lot of time in either one of them. Most days, you'll find me running around campus, inside and outside. The elementary and secondary office managers, Karrie and Ronda, generally know where to find me or they can book an appointment on my schedule. If we haven't met yet, I'm excited to get to know you and your students this year.
I'm really looking forward to the 2024-25 school year and I believe we have great plans for a very strong start.
All my best,
Martha Martin, K-12 Principal

Support Our School by Joining the Lopez Island PTSA!
We are a member-led, non-profit organization in support of LISD students, families, and the school. Membership supports fun events like the pumpkin carving extravaganza, field day, year book signing, as well as appreciation events for staff and teachers. Membership needs to be renewed annually so please sign up.
Also - if you have not already done so - please contribute to the school supplies purchased for students and classrooms. We saved a lot of money by bulk purchasing but we still need families to contribute. Our classrooms use a lot of school supplies during the school year!

Time to Sign up for Elementary Cheer!
Practice starts September 9!
Practices run Sept-March, every Monday from 3:15-4:15. During basketball season practice time may be longer. Coach provides a light snack before each practice. Elementary team is grades 2-6, with consideration for grade 1. An additional tumbling season is being added this year as well which runs April-June. We follow the school schedule, meaning if the school is closed we will not have practice.
This cost includes everything your cheerleader will need, you will not be asked to buy anything additional. Scholarships available if needed.
Energy Credits Available!
OPALCO is working with Washington State to give out $200 bill credits for families! Deadline for this program is September 1st. Even moderate-income families are eligible for the credit - a family of four can make up to 152,000 and be eligible for the credit. Click here to apply! It's super easy. Applicants will need their OPALCO number. Choose "Orcas Power and Light Coop" from the drop down menu.

Knife Sharpening Services are Back!
School chef John Shaw is offering knife sharpening service again on Fridays. This service is a fundraiser for the school's LIFE (Lopez Island Farm Education) program. The cost is $10 per person +$2/in per knife. So if you bring in three knives that are 6in long it would be $46 total.
Sharpening happens on Fridays, ideally you would drop them off in the morning and then John will have them done before 3pm. Email jshaw@lopezislandschool.org to book a slot.
