Note: This is a 2 day in person workshop. You only need to register once, however attendance at both days is required from 9am-5pm.
Data Carpentry workshops are for any researcher who has data they want to analyze, and no prior computational experience is required. This hands-on workshop teaches basic concepts, skills and tools for working more effectively with data. The focuses of this workshop will be working with genomics data, and data management & analysis for genomics research. They will cover metadata organization in spreadsheets, data organization, connecting to and using cloud computing, the command line for sequence quality control and bioinformatics workflows.

Emergency Preparedness
On behalf of Antonio M. Calcado
Executive Vice President & Chief Operating Officer
New Jersey was the epicenter for an earthquake with a magnitude of 4.8 on the Richter Scale. As significant as it was, thankfully, no one was injured, but we were all reminded that the potential for this type of event is real. Please know that aftershocks from that earthquake may continue over the course of the coming weeks.
Please take a look at the University’s Emergency Action Plan, which outlines the basic steps to follow during various types of emergencies, including what to do in the event of an earthquake.
In addition to helping you be better protected and prepared, the information on the appropriate use of the 911 system and building fire alarm systems is critical. Understandably, both systems were used improperly during last week’s earthquake. Inappropriate use of these systems can overload them and prevent a rapid response and proper resource deployment in an emergency.
A key to your preparedness is to register or update your emergency notification information so that you can receive timely and important text messages in the event of an emergency. All university students, faculty, staff, and guests who are subscribed to the emergency notification system are also encouraged to download Rave Guardian, a free mobile safety app designed to keep you connected to the Rutgers University Police Department and enable you to access important campus safety resources.
Emergency-related protocols, tips, and other information can be found at the Office of Emergency Management. For additional emergency preparedness information and to request training, please contact Steven Keleman, director of Emergency Management at 848-932-4879 or email him at Steven.Keleman@rutgers.edu.
Keegstra Bioenergy Research Fellowship Program
On behalf of Anne-Sophie Bohrer, Ph.D.
The Great Lakes Bioenergy Research Center (GLBRC) Keegstra Bioenergy Research Fellowship Program in Integrative Bioenergy Sciences was founded in 2019 with the goal to recruit and support talented and highly motivated postdoctoral fellows to lead projects that cross the traditional bioenergy boundaries of plant feedstocks, biomass deconstruction, microbial conversion, and sustainability and integrate work across two or more GLBRC research teams and possibly other BRCs.
We are pleased to announce new cycle of Keegstra Postdoctoral Fellowship Program (“Keegstra Program”) with new features for research, support, and mentorship to support up to three Fellows.
One application track encourages external eligible candidates to identify at least two GLBRC co-investigators to jointly develop and submit a concept proposal (one page or less) addressing one of the four topic areas of interest: sustainability, feedstock development, deconstruction and separation, and conversion.
Concept proposals should be submitted by June 15.
More details about the Keegstra Program and eligibility can be found on the GLBRC website.

Equity by Design: Practical Strategies, Overcoming Barriers, and Evaluating the Impact of the Equity-Oriented Classroom (Virtual Interactive Workshop)
Office of Teaching Evaluation & Assessment Research
Monday, April 15, 2024, 1:00 – 2:30 pm
There is no one-size-fits-all to education. Because students come from diverse backgrounds, there is an increasing need for teaching methods that are equitable, inclusive, representative, and accessible. This workshop introduces Equity-Oriented Design (EOD), educational design principles that support equitable opportunities for all students and ensure that fair and similar outcomes can be attained regardless of background, ability, or life experience. Strategies for implementing EOD, overcoming barriers of EOD, and evaluating outcomes of EOD will be examined. Participants will form a plan to implement EOD into their classrooms. This session is presented by Dr. Rachel Derr, Clinical Assistant Professor and Prelicensure Program Director at the School of Nursing-Camden. This session is included in the Classroom Inclusivity Series for Competency 2.
