One School One Book!
Dear Parent/Guardian:
Our school is about to take part in a special, community wide shared reading event, One School One Book, during October 6-23. Every family will receive a copy of the same book – Mysteries According to Humphrey by Betty G. Birney – and will be asked to read it together at home over the next few weeks. There will be a bookmark schedule to follow for reading at home. In school, your child will be invited to answer daily trivia questions, during lunch, to encourage and reward attentive listening. I know that you’ll enjoy this special reading time with your child(ren). I hope to talk with your child(ren) in the days to come about Humphrey the hamster as he investigates a mysterious disappearance at School. “When a whole school reads a book, there’s a lot to talk about.” With your help, we can build a Community of Readers at Leeds School!
Picture Day!
We will not be sending Order Flyers home with students this year. Be sure to preorder your pictures at the link listed below:

Koch's Corner
Future Stars Families,
We made it through the first 5 weeks of the 2020-2021 school year safe and sound! I want to thank all of the families, staff, students and community for the continued support as we navigate our way through this “new normal!” I have seen so many great things happening thus far at Leeds and I am looking forward to seeing more and more as we move through this school year and into the future.
I have had a chance to visit the classrooms throughout these first weeks and have been able to see students demonstrating positive attitudes towards learning. The classrooms are filled with rich dialogue and deep thinking while collectively working to build productive learning environments.
As always, we will continue supporting our school with our PBIS expectations of Showing respect, Trying our best, Awesome attitudes, Responsible students, and Safety first.
Have a great month !
Ron Koch,
Principal
Winter Weather Information
With cold weather upon us, it’s important to plan for inclement weather. Please ensure your child is dressed appropriately for the colder weather. Suggested apparel includes a warm coat, hat, scarf and gloves. If a student needs access to these cold weather apparel items, please contact the school office.
Even during the winter season, the District allows recess and outdoor activities to continue as usual. However, if a student does not have appropriate winter clothing, a school official may ask a student to remain inside.
When the atmosphere reaches a temperature that feels like 15 degrees or less, then all students are kept inside for recess/activities. The “feel” of the temperature is determined based on the National Weather Service’s report.
Thank you for helping us keep students safe and warm this season.
School Closure Information
The winter in Iowa provides us with some days that make it a challenge to hold classes at the regular time, and sometimes we must close our schools early, late, or for the entire day. As you know, our weather is not only challenging at times, it is constantly changing.
Please remember that parents and guardians have the right to decide to keep their child home on any day that they feel it is unsafe for their student to be in school because of weather conditions. If you believe the weather provides a genuine reason why you may have to keep your students at home, or take your student home when classes are scheduled to continue, you as a parent or guardian will simply need to contact your child’s school to let them know.
If a decision is made on the day of school to cancel classes or to have a late start, a call goes out at 6:00 AM to all parents and guardians. Parents can also check the following sites for closure information.
1. GovDelivery https://public.govdelivery.com/accounts/IAEDU6039/subscriber/new?qsp=CODE_RED
2. District’s Facebook https://www.facebook.com/SiouxCityCommSchools
3. District’s Twitter @siouxcityschool
4. All media outlets
If the schools are dismissed early or if school is called off entirely, there will be no evening activities. If you have before and after school care, please check with your provider about their procedures.

Communication and Preparedness
Student and staff safety is of paramount importance in the Sioux City Community School District. For this reason, the District exercises a host of crisis prevention and planning tactics. Should an emergency occur, the school notifies you through our Blackboard phone system. In an emergency, the system calls every phone number associated with your child in order to reach you. The message will give you details about the emergency and provide directions on when/where to pick up your child if the normal school day is altered. Learn more about school safety.
