Principal's Update
Each year, through our class assemblies, family meetings, school-wide assemblies, and morning announcements, we focus on developing different character strengths that align with our core values. This year, our work is centered around what's called, "The Cognitive Triangle." (See picture below). In short, our thoughts, feelings, and actions, are interconnected. If we shift our thoughts on something, for example, we can change the way we're feeling about it.
This month, we've been applying this thinking to responsibility, because sometimes, being responsible means doing things that you don't necessarily want to do.* How can you change your thinking to get it done, anyway?
If you find your child stuck with something, try talking it through the lens of the triangle. "It looks like you're thinking that this is unreasonable. You're feeling mad, and you're pitching a fit about it. What would happen if you shifted your thinking to, 'I don't want to, but it won't take long.?"
*The ability to persist through things that aren't preferred is associated with success in life. Successful people think about why they have to do things, and that knoweldge helps them to get it done.
