The time has come to begin planning for the Spring! Please review the information provided in this newsletter to add your course(s). You may begin scheduling on October 26th, 2020.

Some important dates to remember:

• February 5th - Last day to apply for graduation
• February 10th - Last day to drop or add classes
• April 1st - Last day to withdraw from classes
• May 15th - Spring Commencement

MED510.801 - Foundations of Reading Instruction (CRN - 22282)

Course Description: This course is designed to examine the nature of language, acquisition of language, and ways in which language develops. The pedagogy of reading instruction, particularly the nature of the reading process, skill development, and various instructional strategies will be emphasized. Students will examine historical practices as well as current models of reading instruction. (3 credits)

MED512.801 - Advanced Reading in the Content Areas (CRN - 22283)

Instructor: Ms. Wendy Grentz (wgrentz@ycp.edu)

Course Description: This course is designed for reading specialists and elementary teachers. It examines the relationship between reading skills and student achievement in content area subjects and the processes that foster independent learners. Research-based teaching techniques and procedures geared to developing critical thinking skills are emphasized. (3 credits)

MED526.801 - Clinical Practicum in Reading: Diagnosis and Assessment (CRN - 22284)

Course Description:This course is designed to give practice in the use of formal and informal assessments in appraising a childʼs skill in reading and related areas.The utilization of a reading profile or case study that serves as the basis for instructional practices is emphasized. Clinical and field experiences are part of this course. (3 credits)

MED527.801 Clincal Practicum in Reading: Correction and Remediation (CRN - 22285)

Instructor: Dr. Stacey Dammann (sdammann@ycp.edu)

Course Description: In this course, teachers work in teams designing corrective and remedial instructional plans for students with mild to severe reading disabilities, according to their emotional, cultural, and educational learning needs. It involves supervised practice in the use of sociological, psychological, and pedagogical instructional procedures including: keeping student portfolios, collaborating with related support school personnel, conferring with parents, using community resources, and conducting classroom action research. (3 credits)

Course Description: Candidates will explore the range of mental health factors that can influence students’ school experiences in school systems. These can include adverse childhood experiences, trauma, and mental illness. Candidates will also develop enhanced understandings of social-emotional learning while learning to comply with state and federal statutes governing ethical practice for responding to students’ social and emotional needs. 3 credit hours

Course Description: Restorative Practices describe a range of practical approaches educators can take to challenge students to take ownership of their own behavior and create more equitable school communities. Join Dr. Peter Fernandez, a certified Restorative Practices Trainer, for this workshop-style course. Meetings will occur via zoom during an abbreviated 7-week session. Course Description: Candidates will investigate the economic, historical, political and sociological factors that contribute to the current state of American school systems. This investigation will begin with broad national trends including school re-segregation and social stratification, school choice, privatization, and teacher evaluation. Candidates will then explore the effects of those national trends on the urban education systems in which they live and work. Candidates will be challenged to identify opportunities to affect change by participating in the policy dialog surrounding urban education. 3 credit hours

Course Description: Candidates will explore a range of socioeconomic and cultural backgrounds found among students in today’s schools. Candidates will evaluate their personal socioeconomic and cultural experiences and perceptions and evaluate how those experiences and perceptions influence their professional practice. Candidates will explore frameworks for social-emotional approaches to teaching and will apply them in classroom products and performances. 3 credit hours

MED620.801 - Synchronous Technology Pedagogies (CRN - 22295)

Instructor: Ms. Carol Roth (croth3@ycp.edu)

Course Description: Students will be introduced to both education technology integration theories and pedagogical applications of contemporary education technologies. Theories addressed during this course include the Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) Model, the Substitution Augmentation, Modification and Redefinition Model (SAMR), and Technology Self-efficacy Models. Students will apply these theories during explorations of various synchronous and asynchronous pedagogy-enhancing technologies including learning management systems, collaboration tools, and content-presentation systems. (3 credits)

Prep:

• If you are a newly admitted student, be sure to submit the medical forms in your acceptance packet to the YCP Health Center as soon as possible.
• Identify the CRNs (Course Reference Number) of the course(s) that you wish to register for.

Deposit and Holds:

• Each semester you are required to submit a deposit of $100 before you can register for classes.
  
• You should check for any holds on your account at least one week prior to registration so they can be resolved in a timely fashion. Holds can include Health Center information, tuition balance, Library fees, etc.
  
• If you are registering for classes after the due date set by the Business Office, payment in full is expected on that day - Tuition deferment is unavailable after that date.

Registration:

• Go to MyYCP and sign into the York College portal. Click on YCPWeb. Click on Student Services, then Registration, Add/Drop Classes, Select a Term and then enter your CRNs in the spaces available at the bottom of the page.
  
• If you need to drop a class, click on the Action box and click Web Drop. Click Submit Changes on the bottom of the page.
  
• To view your schedule of classes, go to Student Schedule by Day and Time.
  

Tuition Deferment:

If you would like to postpone payment of your tuition bill until the conclusion of the course, please submit your deferment request AS SOON AS POSSIBLE after registering for your class(es). Please use this link to submit your deferment request. You will need an electronic copy of your employer's reimbursement policy to complete the deferment request.
