Chester Elementary School
March 6, 2023. A Year of Significance!
CES Happenings
Hello, CES Families & Friends,
A point of education for you (hey, it's what we do): The State of California mandates that students receive a required amount of instructional minutes each school year. Whenever those are not achieved, adjustment to our school days must be made. In anticipation of significant weather events in Plumas County each year, we "build in" extra minutes to allow for this sort of thing. With the substantial winter weather we have been having this school year, we have now used our built-in snow days, and we are projecting to be short on state-required instructional minutes. Because of this, Plumas Unified will add in required instructional minutes by going to full school days on Mondays at all school sites for the remainder of the year. Beginning Monday, March 6th, all school sites will be dismissed on Mondays at the regular Tuesday-Friday release times. Click here to access the new bell schedule. Kindergarten students will be released every day at 2:20 and Grades 1-6 will be released every day at 2:30.
If additional instructional minutes are needed due to additional delayed starts or snow days, our minimum days on the last three days of the school year may be utilized. This determination will be made by May 1st. I appreciate the flexibility as we navigate these unique circumstances.
A great weekend to all of you. Take care and happy shoveling...again.
Sincerely,
Scott Cory
Principal
Upcoming Dates

It's Dr. Seuss' Birthday!
National Read Across America Day is celebrated each year on March 2, Dr. Seuss's birthday. If you don't know, Theodor Seuss Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss, is a famous children's author and cartoonist. How does CES celebrate? Guest readers! There is so much community support for our school, for which we are grateful. Some of our readers included Kristin Courtright, Heidi Van Gieson and Kacie Broussard (Seneca Hosp.), Amanda Sweeney (Lassen Park), Officers Lacey Carney and Taylor Fountain (CHP), Chris Dean and Richelle Walsh (Chester Fire), Tracy Smith and Richelle Clement (Plumas Bank), Debbie Lundquiet, Sue Haltom and Suzanne McDonal (Friends of the Library), Dr. Meredith Masch (Veterinarian) and Bill Roderick, PUSD Superintendent of Schools. Thanks so much to all of you sharing your time and building into the lives of our students.
Chester Elementary Wrestlers Win at the Rumble In Reno Tournament!!!
"Rumble in Reno" is a huge wrestling tournament put on by the Rocky Mountain National Events. 1,500 wrestlers from 29 states participated this last weekend. Chester Youth took nine wrestlers and seven placed! This is a phenomenal achievement and congratulations are certainly in order to all. Here is what they brought home:
- Mateo Herrera 1st place
- London Pleau 3rd place
- Dylan Peters 2nd place
- Emilio Herrera 2nd and 4th place
- Bryson Longacre 2nd and 3rd place

Seen in the picture are brothers Emilio and Mateo Herrera. A special congratulations to Mateo (seen holding the championship belt) for his first place finish. This is a first in Chester wrestling history. The proud parents of these boys are Juan and Ashlee Herrera.

Teacher Feature: Jane Brown
Dr. Jane Brown is our music teacher, and boy are we proud of her. Recently awarded Teacher of the Year by the California Music Educators Association, I'd like to share more about who she is. A Chester native, she attended both CES and CHS for her public school years and is grateful for her experiences growing up here. She had this to say about it: "I was born on the Bay Area peninsula, but my family loved visiting the area here so much that about the time I was born, they had built a house here, on the East Shore, and we moved up shortly thereafter. I got a great education here and have many fond memories--a host of great, caring teachers and coaches, great music teachers, and wonderful, lifelong friends--from my time growing up here. I started my musical studies with Bev Maurer, Gordon Minor, Dr. Dave Ehrke, Jim Norman, Marsha Roby, Lori Metcalf, Jeff Stratton, and many others. In addition to my musical activities, I also loved Basketball and Volleyball, rode horses, sailed with friends on the lake, sang in the church choir with Mom, played in the Lake Almanor Dance Band, and fly fished with Dad almost every evening in the summer. I feel very blessed to have had such great experiences and associations as a young person here!"
Obtaining her doctorate of Musical Arts in Orchestral Conducting last May from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas last May, Jane has done much in the realm of music, impacting thousands of young people and adults via such conducting roles with organizations such as the Reno Philharmonic You Symphony Orchestra, the Reno Pops Orchestra, the Ruby Mountain Symphony and numerous guest conducting roles for bands, orchestras and ensembles. I encourage you to check our her website here (yes, she has one). One of her unique experiences has been that of conducting orchestras in both Russia and Ukraine over the past several years! It's worth reading about. We're so fortunate to have her working with our students!
🎵Parents & Friends of Chester Music Programs! 🎵
Our Chester Band students are excited to get our music program back up and running and would like to attend the Reno Jazz Festival on Friday April 28th! 🎺
Would you please consider helping us fund the cost of bus transportation, RJF festival passes, and other expenses associated with this wonderful experience?
Our fundraising goal is $3,000 so that students in grades six through twelve can attend.
