Volume 5 Ed. 8
Message from Bob Carnaroli
Dear Raider Nation,
It's hard to believe that we are heading into Fall Break already. The end of the 1st grading period is Oct 11th. I have been very proud of our students' attendance and tardies as a whole. There are some students that have some work to do in those areas. As I have stated before, we need students here at school on a consistent basis and arriving to class on time. We need to maximize instructional time and provide daily help in Raider Time. This is the secret to our success ...outwork people, and be consistent with good habits. Hard work never goes out of style!
Perfect Attendance and No Tardies for the Month of August will be rewarded with a special raffle. Gift cards, school swag, and Raider Nation Sunglasses will be prizes.. That drawing will take place on return from fall break. We have 450 students with no absences and no tardies. That is 20% of the school . Congrats to those students and we want to see that number grow.
Activities are off to a strong start with the following to date:
- Softball has won 5 region games in a row and stands in a 2nd place tie in the region.
- Volleyball is 15 - 3 and 4 - 0 in region play with South Forsyth up next on Thursday. The showdown with 21 - 0 and nationally ranked Alpharetta is on Tuesday!
- Football is 3 - 1 after a 49 - 14 win over cross town region rival South Forsyth. 9th Grade football is undefeated and is the team to beat in the league this year.
- Comp Cheer is coming off a state championship season and the team picked up right where they left off on Saturday. They won the Walton Invitational in 6A with a stacked line up of top teams.
- Cross Country is turning out PR times each weekend and getting better as our 4 teams perform against some very good competition.
- Engineering Robotics student leaders hosted 120 ES age students across the county Saturday providing a hands on workshop . The sessions stressed VEX interview skills, notebook prep, and many multiple stations with robotic and technology principles.
- DECA has recruited over 260 members and this is the largest in school history.
- FBLA has 65 members, growing from last year.

Welcome Future Neighbors!
The land that touches NFHS and is currently being developed is owned by Orchards of Coal Mountain. The development will be called Orchards, and is slated to become a 66 unit condo development as an independent senior living neighborhood. 14 of the 26 acres will be green space.
There has been a big request for a senior living community within Coal Mountain and the population that would reside in this community were excited to be close to young people. They would not contribute to the traffic during peak times due to the age of the residents being retired.
We will welcome them to NFHS and Raider Nation ... they can help make us even better.

September is Suicide Prevention Month
Suicide can be a very difficult topic to discuss, especially with teenagers. It’s hard to know if a teens’ behavior is “normal” or if there is cause for concern. Forsyth County Schools uses the SOS Signs of Suicide Program to teach suicide prevention to our 9th grade students. It is an evidence-based program that helps students identify warning signs of suicide and depression. Students are encouraged to Acknowledge, Care, and Tell (a trusted adult) if they are concerned about themselves or a friend. We presented this program the week of September 9-13. Overall, we met with over 100 students who indicated they may be struggling or that they needed to speak to someone. We also talked with students about identifying trusted adults in case they need someone in the future. It’s encouraging that many of our students consider their parents to be trusted adults.
The MindWise SOS Program indicates the following to be signs that your teen may be struggling or that they are thinking about suicide:
- Major changes in appearance, eating, or sleep
- Extreme withdrawal from friends and family
- Increased anger, agitation, or risky behavior (including alcohol or drug use)
- Sounding hopeless, trapped, or overwhelmed
- Talk of death or wanting to kill themselves
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) WISQARS Leading Causes of Death Reports , in 2021:
- Suicide was the eleventh leading cause of death overall in the United States, claiming the lives of over 48,100 people.
- Suicide was the second leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 10-14 and 25-34 , the third leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 15-24, and the fifth leading cause of death among individuals between the ages of 35 and 44.
- There were nearly two times as many suicides (48,183) in the United States as there were homicides (26,031).
If you are concerned about your child, please reach out to their school counselor, their pediatrician, or the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline at 988.
