Dear Short Avenue Families,
Welcome to Short Avenue Elementary School! We are looking forward to an amazing 2024-2025 school year! You will be joining the greatest community of students, parents, and staff members who are deeply committed to our Short Avenue family. The first day of school begins Monday, August 12, 2024, at 8:15am. Please read this newsletter carefully, as it provides you with information necessary for a successful first week on campus.
UTK & K Playdates
We will have a playdate for UTK on Monday, August 5th from 3:00-4:00 here on campus at Short Avenue. On Tuesday, August 6th from 3:00-4:00, we will have a playdate for Kindergarten at Short Avenue. This will be a time for you to meet other families, the teachers, and ask any questions you may have. Parents and their child/ren are invited.
1st Day of School
Students begins at 8:15am for all students in 1st- 5th grade. Students in 1st- 5th grade will enter school through their assigned gates (see below) and meet their teacher on the playground. There will be an assembly on the big yard/playground to welcome everyone back to school. Parents may walk their children to the playground and stay for the assembly. Students will be dismissed at 2:38pm through their assigned gates (see below), unless they take part in one of our after-care programs.
For students entering UTK and Kindergarten, school starts at 9:00am on the first day of school. We will convene in the auditorium for a brief welcome and introductions, and then students will walk with their teachers to the classrooms. Parents will remain in the auditorium for our TK/Kinder parent orientation. Students will be dismissed at 2:38pm at front of the school, by the TK/Kindergarten gate.
Getting to/from School
There are three ways to enter school in the morning. UTK & Kindergarten students must enter through the front gate that leads into their playground area. 1st grade students can enter through the small gate on Beethoven and 2nd-5th grade students will enter through the gate on Short Avenue. Afternoon pickup for TK & Kindergarten is at the front of the school. 1st grade students will exit through the small gate on Beethoven. 2nd-5th grade students will exit through the large gate on Beethoven, closer to Short Ave. Older students may come through any gate with their younger siblings. We will have staff available on the first day to assist you.
School Schedule:
School starts at 8:15am for all students. Students can line up on the playground beginning at 7:55am and wait for their teacher who will lead them to the classroom. School is dismissed at 2:38pm on Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays and at 1:35pm on Tuesdays only. UTK, Kindergarten & 1st grade parents who are tardy to pick up will find their child in the office.

School Supply Lists
After School Programs:
We have four after school programs options for our community. Three are on site at our school and one is off-site.
Youth Services (LAUSD Beyond the Bell Program) - YS is FREE for students in 2nd-5th grade. The program runs from dismissal daily until 6pm. There is no cap on capacity and there is flexibility in pick up times.
After-School All Stars (Grant Funded LAUSD Beyond the Bell Program) - ASAS is FREE for students 5yrs of age and older. The program runs from dismissal daily until 6pm. There is a cap of 80 students total in this program and it requires a full-time commitment. *There will be an information meeting on August 6th, from 6-7pm in the Short Ave Auditorium.
Prime Time (3rd Party Provider at Short Ave) - Prime Time is a FEE based program that is offered to ALL students. The program runs from dismissal daily until 6pm. *There will be an informational Zoom meeting on Monday, August 5th, at 6:00pm. See flier below with Zoom link information. Please be aware that there is a typo in the flier. The Zoom meeting is Monday, August 5th NOT August 7th. The meeting will be recorded for those who cannot attend. Cost will be $510 per month. Boys and Girls Club of Los Angeles (3rd Party off site provider) - BGCLA is a FEE based program that is offered to ALL students. The program runs from dismissal daily. If more than 10 students register there can be transportation provided from Short Ave to their Venice facility. Cost is approximately $400 for the year and $100 per month for transportation. Fliers are available in the main office. Please contact the Boys and Girls Club with questions and to register.
Class Assignments
Rosters will be available on Friday, August 9th at 4:00pm, on the Parent Portal, in Schoology, and on the Class Dojo app. TK/K will meet their teacher on the first day of school, in the auditorium. All other students will meet their teacher on the main playground. School begins at 8:15am for grades 1-5 and 9:00am for grades TK and Kindergarten.

FoSA Welcome Back Picnic: For all Short Avenue community
FoSA (Friends of Short Avenue) Booster Club
Our dedicated parent group is available to help make your transition smooth. Please feel free to contact members of the Booster Club, Friends of Short Avenue- FoSA, with questions and ideas. Grab a Board Member the first week of school, or you can find contact information at www.friendsofshortavenue.org. In addition, all parents are encouraged to attend FoSA Booster Club meetings throughout the school year.
Volunteering:
The school has many diverse and exciting opportunities that are available for parents to lend a hand and volunteer. In addition to Friends of Short Avenue, FoSA Booster volunteer activities, teachers will provide you with details of how to volunteer in the classroom. Please also plan to attend the first FoSA Booster Club meeting on August 22nd at 8:20am. Please be aware that parents must be cleared to volunteer in the classroom. Information regarding the process to become a cleared volunteer will be in the upcoming school newsletter, The Weekly Wave.
