Principal's Message
Dear Burk Elementary Families,
Welcome to the 2024-2025 school year! I am excited to welcome our new families to Burk and as I am still getting to know everyone, I look forward to seeing the faces of our returning families. As this is my first year at Burk, I have been working with our campus leadership team throughout the summer to plan instructionally as well as logistically for this coming year!
The front office is open Monday through Friday from 7a.m. to 4p.m. Class lists will be available on Infinite Campus on Tuesday, July 16th at 5:00 p.m. Please know that our teachers worked diligently to ensure that each student is placed in the most successful environment. There are many components that have to be considered, so please know that your child has been placed in the most optimal environment for their needs.
Please be sure to complete your Annual Update, so that we have the most up to date contact information and you are able to see who your child's teacher will be. More information about Infinite Campus can be found below. Also, please be sure to read the GPS Elementary Handbook for important information pertaining to all students.
We look forward to seeing all Preschool through 6th Grade students at Meet the Teacher Night on Friday, July 19th from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. The first day of school will be on Tuesday, July 23rd!
I hope you have a fun and safe rest of the summer!
Sincerely,
Katrina Gruse
Principal

Arrival and Dismissal
There are multiple ways for students to get to and from school.
Students may ride the bus. Contact GPS transportation for information.
Students may ride bikes or walk. There is a bike rack that is locked during the school day. Students must follow procedures. (GPS Elementary Handbook)
Parents may park in the parking lot and walk students to the main gate. Parking is limited. (After the 1st day, parents are not permitted past the gate).
Parents may drive students through the drop off and pick up line. (See map and procedures).
There is no drop off and pick up in the front of the school. K-6 families will be given yellow placards. The only exception is parents who are notified by their teacher. These families will receive a purple placard.
Students may arrive, no earlier than 7:45 a.m. Prior to this time, there are no staff members to ensure student safety. Students may get breakfast and/or play on the playground. The first bell rings at 8:05 a.m. and the tardy bell rings at 8:10 a.m. Students arriving after the tardy bell are required to check-in at the front office for a tardy pass.
Students are dismissed at 2:55 p.m. (1:55 p.m. on Wednesdays). If you are picking a student up earlier than dismissal, you must check them out through the front office. The same transportation options are available in the afternoon.
Bus Riders
Students riding the bus need their ID badges to get on and off as this is attached to “Here Comes the Bus App.” All students will be provided with an ID badge and lanyard after school pictures on August 6th. By September students who do not have their ID badge to get on the bus at the end of the school day will be placed in the office for parents to pick up.
Safety and Security
The safety of students at Burk is our number one priority. When coming to campus, you must be let in by the front office staff at the main door and then you are required to sign in at the front office where you will receive a visitors badge that must be worn at all times while on campus.
In the coming weeks, we will have four keyless entry doors installed that are locked at all times. This will allow us to keep all main entry doors locked throughout the day. All staff will have badges to access the doors and classrooms outside the main building will have badges for student use to access restrooms, the nurse, and the front office.
Classrooms that have an entry door leading directly outside, will remain locked at all times during school hours. Each door has a peephole to look through before opening a door for anyone.
We will again have our campus security team member, Will Biascoechea. Will is assigned to three campuses in the district and does perform regular campus walks to check our security measures.
If there are ever suggestions of how to improve our safety measures, please reach out to us.

Cell Phones and Smart Watches
Burk follows the GPS policy no phones bell to bell (this includes Smart Watches). This policy means that once students enter campus and until they are off campus, phones must be silenced and put away and Smart Watches are turned to school mode if available, otherwise they are to be silenced and not used for apps or text messages. This includes pick-up in the afternoon and on buses. Students are always allowed to use school phones for emergencies and if parents need to get in contact with a student during the day, please contact the front office. If your child has a cell phone or Smart Watch they bring to school, you must sign and return the GPS Cell Phone/Smart Watch policy.
