What is a skilled trade?
A skilled trade is an occupation that requires a particular skillset, knowledge base or ability. You see the evidence of skilled trades every day—when you walk into a building, drive down the road, go to a restaurant, or simply turn on a light.
When people think of skilled trades, there’s a few that immediately come to mind—Plumber, Carpenter, Electrician—but the trades are much more extensive, with nearly 100 to choose from in B.C. Everything from Crane Operators to Hairstylists, Locksmiths to Arborists, and much more.
Thinking about becoming a baker? Here’s the inside scoop!
Bakers work their magic with doughs, batters, and all sorts of tasty ingredients to create delicious treats like bread, buns, cakes, pies, cookies, and so much more. They mix, knead, and bake using cool machinery, like high-volume mixers and ovens, to produce big batches of goodies that are just right in both taste and quality.
Bakers also keep things running smoothly by creating production schedules, making sure they have all the ingredients they need, and sometimes even supervising the sales of their baked creations. They may also hire and train other bakers and kitchen staff to keep everything rising to the occasion!
Most bakers work in places like supermarkets, specialty bakeries, restaurants, and hotels—so whether it’s a cozy café or a bustling bakery, there’s always a place for fresh-baked goodness!
