Dear Orca families,
Happy second week of school! At Orlando Science K-6 Tech Campus, we are on a mission to provide a well-rounded education with special emphasis in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM), while using research-based and innovative instructional methods in a stimulating learning environment. OSES is committed to the social-emotional learning and character development of all students.
This week, our dedicated teachers and staff have been focused on setting goals for the year and building a vibrant school culture. It is essential that at the beginning of the year we take time to develop the classroom community and establish clear expectations, routines, and procedures. However, starting next week we will take off on our path towards excellence.
As you read through this week’s newsletter you will find important updates and information.
To start, next week will begin our PM1 STAR/FAST testing window. This assessment is an important tool that helps us gather valuable data to understand each student's current academic progress and identify areas where additional support may be needed. You will find more information below such as when your child tests and more.
Additionally, we will have curriculum night next week. If you haven’t already signed up, you can access the link below to secure your spot.
Many of you have been wanting to sign up for more clubs. You will find the signupgenius link below to view after school clubs that have space. Please note that spots are available on a first-come, first-serve basis, so be sure to sign up as soon as possible to secure your child's spot!

Picture Day is coming on Monday, August 21st 2023! Lifetouch School Photography, known for capturing school pictures from K-12 nationwide, will take our school photos this year. NEW! K-5 Classroom Group Photos will also be taken on Tuesday, October 17th 2023 during Picture Re-Take day.

Curriculum and Testing Updates
All students will take the first FAST Progress Monitoring assessment in the coming weeks. Next week, sixth grade students will test on Tuesday (8/22) and Thursday (8/24). Grades 3-5 will test on Tuesday (8/29) and Thursday (8/31). Grades K-2 will start testing on August 18th – classroom teachers will reach out with the exact dates and times. Please make sure your student arrives at school by 8:00 am. Students need a good night's rest and a healthy breakfast. Contact Mrs. Carter (Cayce.Carter@orlandoscience.org) with any questions.

KINDERGARTEN

This week in Kindergarten, we are beginning our Math and Reading curriculum! Our class has been doing our best to learn rules and routines, work on letter writing, and use materials to STEM build! I can’t wait to learn and grow more with them next week.
FIRST
Bayno
This week in First Grade, we continued mastering our classroom routines,
procedures and started with our academic learning.
In our Writing, we started day 1 of our writing foundation. Wherein we draw ourselves by using shapes and lines.
In Reading, we started talking about Elements of Poetry. We talked about rhyme, alliteration, and repetition as we listened to the big book Pete the Cat: Rocking in My School Shoes. We were able to look and scan our Reading textbook which is more exciting since it has so many stories and activities to do!
In Math, we Solve addition problems involving situations of putting two parts together.
We are excited to be using our textbook and be able to write and solve problems in it.
In Science, this week was focused on investigating and observations. We are learning what it means to be a scientist, as well as becoming one ourselves!
Also, we had so much fun coming back to school. We decorated our cubbies, made a self-portrait, and presented our bags that have our 3 favorite things. Our first two days were amazing, looking forward to this whole school year ❤️
1st grade is collecting empty cereal boxes for an upcoming project. If you have any to donate, please give them to a 1st grade teacher or our front office staff.
We are always grateful to add used and new books to our classroom libraries, please continue to send in your old books.
SECOND

This week we were starting to get into our normal routines by reviewing 1st grade content and more Back to School activities. Our class filled in information about themselves to make an All About Me poem. This will be displayed outside of our classroom for Curriculum Night on Tuesday. In Math we are reviewing place value with tens and ones. The students need to have a good foundation with place value to be able to move on to hundreds and thousands this year. ELA we are working on central idea, describing characters in a story. We read a book about working dogs on a farm and the students picked the dog they felt was the most important to write and draw.
THIRD
Gerstung
This week was full of more getting to know you activities and reviewing procedures and routines in the classroom. Students had their first Character Developemnt and computer class for specials. In Math, we began reviewing numbers and place value. In ELA, we were able to read our first story from our Into Reading text, Marisol McDonald Doesn’t Match, where we identified qualities that made the characters interesting. Students also began learning about the continents and oceans with fun songs and mapping activities. It has been an awesome first full week of 3rd grade!
FOURTH
Blaske
Ms. Blaske’s classes have participated in getting to know you activities, group building work, and a STEM challenge. The STEM challenge was to build the tallest tower. They were given time to build first then collaborate on strategies to build better. Finally, they put those strategies to use, and worked together to build their tall towers.
FIFTH
Kaljulaid
.This week fifth graders began developing their summarizing skills to fiction texts through a passage about Thomas Edison and Henry Ford. Their focus skills are currently being learned and practiced alongside texts about inventors, which has certainly piqued their interest. In social studies students have continued learning and practicing organizational and group work skills.
SIXTH
Nemcik
This week in 6th grade, we are continuing to review rules, procedures and expectations for the year. The students are doing a great job so far and we are looking forward to a productive and enjoyable 23 – 24 school year. In Language Arts class we are beginning instruction with figurative language (similes, metaphors, idioms, personification, etc.). Be sure to ask your 6th grader for examples of figurative language.
Next week (Tuesday 8/22 and Thursday 8/24), 6th graders will complete their first FAST assessments for the year. Be sure your child gets plenty of rest and arrives at school on time for this important event.
SPECIALS
Coates- Visual Arts
Specials started the new school year by getting to know each other and welcoming our new students. We talked about procedures and safety in the classroom as well as outside.
In Art class we talked more in depth about how to navigate the art room and specifically about procedures that help us make the most of our time. We also discussed what art can do for us and how art is a personal expression of the artist. Our goal was to come together as a team and start the process of making art. We are ready to create!
Responsibility is the ORCA Character Trait for August. Responsibility means taking ownership for your actions.
One way our Orcas can show responsibility is by arriving each day ready to learn in their uniform. Please refer to the video on our website for more information on dress code.
Please make sure to review the OSES and OCPS Code of Conduct with your child, and return it to their homeroom teacher.
OSES teachers will be using the Sanford Harmony program this year to teach Character Development.

PICK UP: Please remember that you should not arrive on campus before clubs dismiss. Even coming 5 minutes early causes backups in our dismissal process.
- Building 1 (grades K-3) - clubs dismiss at 3:40 during the week and 2:40 on Wednesday
- Building 2 (grades 4-6)- clubs dismiss at 3:40 during the week and 2:40 on Wednesday
ABSENCES: Remember that 3 or more consecutive absences will result in a removal from the club. If you are missing club because of tutoring or sickness, email the club teacher so it can be excused.

We are preparing for the 2023-2024 FIRST LEGO League season! FIRST LEGO League is an international engineering competition sponsored by the non-profit organization FIRST, For Inspiration in Recognition of Science and Technology. Teams compete in tournaments, designing and programming Spike Prime Robots to manipulate LEGO models on a 4’ X 8’ map, creating innovative solutions to a real engineering problem of their choice.
The theme for the 2023-2024 year is “Masterpiece” in which teams will identify and solve a real-world problem for their Project. All students interested in participating in Orlando Science Elementary’s FIRST Lego League team(s) must complete this packet. Completing this packet does not guarantee that students will be able to participate. Coaches will evaluate the applications received, consider the number of spots available on teams, and will use their best judgment to determine which students will be asked to participate and which team those students will be placed on. Space is limited. We run 2 FLL teams with typically 8 kids per team (10 kids max). Each team requires parental coaching and involvement. Parents interested in coaching or with questions should indicate so on the application. Please don’t delay in returning this application. Team members will be required to pay a team fee--$150 to be enrolled on the team. Team fees covers the T-shirts, Competition Entrance fees, Team Registration and supplies.

Orlando Science School Competition Math

Dear Parents,
This is Kerim Akyalcin from Orlando Science High School. I have been working at OSS for over 13 years. Over these years, I have been preparing our middle and high school students for variety of math competitions. This year, I will also be coordinating the math competitions for elementary school students (4th and 5th grade only).
I’m sending this email to inform you that there will be a parent information meeting for our competition math program on this Saturday, August 19th. If you and your student are interested in being part of OSS competition math program, please fill out the below Interest Form by Friday, August 18th. Details of the Competition Math program will be shared at the meeting. Future communications will be made with parents who fill out this form only.

Math Competitions
Mathematics competitions are contests that typically challenge top mathematics students to solve problems more difficult than those typically tested by standardized tests or in the classroom. Math competitions differ widely in difficulty and content. Most test a broader range of mathematics curriculum and some focus on methods of mathematical problem solving.
There are many benefits to participating in math competitions. Here are a few of the most important ones:
Improved math skills: Math competitions require students to solve challenging math problems that they may not have encountered in school. This helps students to develop their problem-solving skills and to learn new mathematical concepts.
Increased confidence: Math competitions can help students to gain confidence in their math abilities. When students are able to solve difficult math problems, it gives them a sense of accomplishment and pride. This can lead to increased confidence in other areas of their lives as well.
Motivation to learn: Math competitions can motivate students to learn more math. When students see that they are capable of solving challenging math problems, it can spark their curiosity and interest in the subject. This can lead to them seeking out more math challenges and opportunities to learn.
Sense of community: Math competitions can help students to connect with other students who share their love of math. This can be a great way to make new friends and to feel supported in their learning.
College and career preparation: Math competitions can help students to prepare for college and for careers in STEM fields. Many colleges and universities look favorably on students who have participated in math competitions. Additionally, many STEM employers value the problem-solving and critical thinking skills that students develop through math competitions.

It makes the line longer if you are showing your car tag and not using PIKMYKID. IF YOU MUST SHOW THE CAR TAG, PLEASE BE SURE YOU ARE SHOWING IT TO THE PERSON TAKING NUMBERS BEFORE YOU GET TO THE FRONT OF THE LINE so that by the time you get to the front of the line, your student will be waiting. AGAIN, makes the car line longer if you are showing your tag at the front of the line because people are then backed up behind you.

- LATE ARRIVALS: Students can only be dropped off at the front office if it is AFTER 8:10 (class start time) & parents are with them as THEY NEED TO SIGN THEM IN AS A LATE ARRIVAL. PARENTS CANNOT LEAVE STUDENTS AT THE FRONT BY THEMSELVES.
- SCHOOL PAY: SCHOOL PAY was having technical issues with users attending Charter Schools. School Pay is letting us know it will be a few days before the issues are fixed. Please be patient. You do have 4 weeks to submit club payments. Another email will be sent out when it is fixed on their end.
- CLUBS: Clubs dismiss at 3:40pm and 2:40pm on Wednesdays. ARRIVE IN CAR LINE FOR CLUB PICK UP AT 3:45. (2:45pm for Wednesdays) to prevent congestion in the pick up car line.
- WALKERS: PARENTS must complete Walker Form before a student can be a walker. Walkers sign out at the front desk. WALKERS DO NOT GO INTO THE CAR LINE. THEY WALK OFF-CAMPUS.
- High school students picking up walkers must GO OFF CAMPUS, NOT TO THE CAR LINE.
- SKYWARD ACCESS: SKYWARD IS HAVING TECHNICAL ISSUES. If you are unable to access skyward parent access, be sure you have completed the emergency health form. (BACK PAGE HAS THE HEALTH CONSENT QUESTIONS) and they will be manually entered into Skyward. Another email will be sent out later once SKYWARD is fixed.
- Sibling Pick up: if you have both a highschooler and elementary schooler please take advantage of our new sibling pick up option where highschoolers wait between building one and two. DO NOT park at the high school and walk across Technology Dr as this results in causing the car rider line to backup.
