Vivian Banks Charter School Weekly Update - August 4, 2023
Principal's Message
Greetings VBCS Families!
The VBCS campus is abuzz with energy as teachers and staff prepare for the start of a new school year. The level of excitement and anticipation is through the roof as we welcome our wonderful students back on campus on August 16th. Breakfast service will begin at 7:45 and the learning will begin at 8:15 sharp! Below you will find an attachment of the 2023-2024 School Calendar.
I would like to extend a warm welcome to our new team members joining us this year. Bryanna Kinlicheene will be serving as our Phycologist. Lee Anne Brahan will be serving our students as our Literacy Specialist this year. Lastly, we welcome Eric Burnett as our Resource Teacher.
Our success as a school is directly linked to our ability to operate as a team. When we all share the same information and support systems that nurture a safe school focused on learning, we pave the way for student success.
Thank you for being part of the VBCS team!

2023-2024 Bell Schedule
Back to School Night
Back to school night this year will take place on August 31, 2023. The evening will begin with a welcome from the principal and ice cream in the courtyard from 4:30-5:00. From 5:00-6:00 parents will be invited to their student’s classroom where teachers will present details of their academic programs and share student learning targets for the year. Additional information will be sent home soon.
The Importance of School Attendance
As we all know most students who arrive tardy are late due to factors out of their control. As parents it is our responsibility to ensure our children are attending school everyday on time.
We work very hard to ensure that your child receives the best education possible, provided your child, when healthy and able, is in school every day and on time. Please help us provide your child with the outstanding education he or she deserves.
Extended Learning Opportunities Program (ELOP) (Formally ASES)
Beginning in the 2023-24 school year, Vivian Banks Charter School will offer expanded afterschool programs (ELOP) for students in grades TK-5. The program promises to provide new afterschool options for families seeking childcare support in the afternoons and thirty (30) 9-hour, non-school “intersession” days (i.e., summer, spring break, and other non-school days)
It is the intent of the ELOP grant to encourage schools and school districts to provide safe and educationally enriching alternatives for children and youth during non-school hours.
What will the ELOP offer?
Under state law, ELOPs will provide:
Afterschool programming for 180 school days every day school is in session from dismissal to 6:00pm.
Thirty (30) 9-hour, non-school “intersession” days (i.e., summer, spring break, and other non-school days)
The programming will focus on developing the academic, social, emotional, and physical needs and interests of students through hands-on, engaging learning experiences.
There is no cost to participate in ELOP. If you are interested in your student participating in ELOP please contact Nancy Mata at (760) 742-3300.
Breakfast and Lunch Service
We encourage our families to take advantage of Vivian Bank's free Breakfast and Lunch service for all of our students. All food items served at VBCS meet Federal nutrition requirements. Breakfast service begins at 7:45am and concludes at 8:15am.
Students are also provided a daily opportunity to eat a snack during recess. We highly encourage our families to consider providing a healthy snack for their student to eat during this time.
Preferred snack items include:
- Baked Chips
- Fruits or canned fruits
- Cheese
- Crackers
- Dried Fruits
- Fresh Vegetables
- Graham Crackers
- Popcorn
- Pretzels
- Trail Mix
- Yogurt
PBIS - Positive Behavior Interventions
We will teach these expectations to the students during classroom instruction and during review activities. These expectations will provide a school environment where more time is spent instructing and less time spent disciplining. By teaching the expected behaviors in a positive way, we are providing a common language for everyone in our building, including students, teachers, and staff. We believe that by helping students practice good behavior, we will build a school community where all students can learn.
Love on your Back
Love on your Back
Love on your Back is a non-profit program that supplements food for low income families or children whose families are in crisis. Love On Your Back supplements these children by providing nutritional food to last over the weekend when they are not in school. It is our belief that children need proper nutrition in order to learn. The goal of Love On Your Back is to fill that need for any student in the Bonsall Unified School District who is food compromised. No child goes hungry. If you are interested in participating in Love on your Back, please contact Carol Wood at the following link, or call (760) 224-1098.
