Weekly Update February 2, 2024
Strive Center for Autism
Upcoming "Free" Day Off
We have a Professional Development day scheduled for Friday, March 1st – this will mean NO THERAPY in both buildings. We also have an opportunity for a few families to take an extra day off on Thursday, February 29th (the day before) to make a long weekend for you. We are providing Professional Crisis Management (PCM) training for our newest staff members at that time, and it requires two days.
If your family is interested in taking February 29th off to have an extra long weekend, please reach out via our Therapy Schedule Update form using the link below. When you complete the question regarding your reason for absence that day, choose “other” and type in “free day off” or similar.
This day will not count against your attendance in anyway.
We have 5 staff members in Brighton who will attend the training, and 2 in Burton, so we have a total of 7 available spots for families. So far, we have 2 families signed up - so be sure and sign up if you're interested.
Please reach out if you have any questions!
VIP Day - next Friday, 2/9/24
Our VIP Days are an opportunity for each child to bring in one very important person to learn more about how they spend their time at Strive! We have spots available at drop off or pick up for about 45 minutes. We ask that each child bring just one VIP to each event, if the chosen VIP is a child too, then an additional caregiver is required. We have 4 VIP Days throughout the year, so don't worry if you can't attend this one. Children will make a craft and have a snack with their VIP, and provide a quick tour of the center as well.
Sign up links were sent via Remind, and available below. Be sure to sign up for the correct location:
Table time is FUN time!
At Strive Center, we always work to make learning fun! Kids will learn very quickly that a table means "work" if you don't try to be sure there's plenty of fun too! Our kids enjoy bubbles, play doh, and LOTS of toys at their tables every day so they learn that learning is fun!
Therapist Switch
Just a friendly reminder that we do switch therapists every 2-3 months at Strive. For some families, your child will be working with someone you may not have worked with before, for some, it will be a return to an old friend. Please keep in mind that switching therapists is important for your children for several reasons:
• It allows generalization of skills, to ensure that your child can respond to any teacher
• It helps to reinforce flexibility and a positive response to changes
• It gives your child a fun and different perspective, with a new person to play with
As parents, the most important thing you can do is say positive things about your child's therapist in front of him - "Look - it's Jill! You're going to have so much fun with her this morning!" or "It sounds like you had a great time with Sue this afternoon!"
We continue to update our staff pictures on our website, and we'll begin posting staff profiles here in our newsletter again as well. These are a good way for you to show your child who he's working with and talk about what a great time he'll have.
Switching therapists is an important step in preparing your child for school and other settings, and we thank you for your support.
