KEY NEWS FOR EXPLORER FAMILIES
Thank you to all the many families who attended curriculum nights this week. The evenings are always a wonderful way to build the home and school connection that is so important for student success.
Next week will be a short one for students as they have Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday off. The staff will be participating in professional development specific to their roles on Tuesday and Wednesday. Our campus will be closed on Monday for Labor Day.
Reading with and to our students is so important. Northwood will continue to create a spark for the love of reading for all our Explorers. Whether the books are enjoyed after a library visit or they are enjoyed as audio books during travel, exposing them to interesting and engaging texts is so important. Each classroom went on a scavenger hunt these past weeks and at each clue location picked up a book to be read aloud throughout the school year. Some of the classes have already jumped in to reading and others will start soon. For those that have started the books, it’s been wonderful to hear their thoughts and share their reactions to the stories. Thank you to Ms. Evangelista, our CST, for organizing the scavenger hunts.
We have a good number of kindergarten and second grade families that still need to return documents for residency verification. Please reach out to our data clerk, Amy Dulion (dulionaw@fultonschools.org), if you have any questions. Specific district required residency verification letters will be sent out next week to families that still have documents to submit.
Loved seeing so many teams and team colors today! This weekend will be the start of many fun weekends of college football, and NFL games are around the corner.
Please enjoy the nice long holiday weekend and find time to enjoy the outdoors while staying cool. If you have time, we’d love for you to share more Northwood Nice Notes ~ you can find the link here.
With gratitude,
Heather Rucker
Principal
FOURTH GRADE EXPLORERS
In Fourth grade we have been diving into the American Revolution in social studies. Students are enjoying learning about the causes, important people, and the battles that took place during this time period. One group we learned about was the Sons of Liberty. The Sons of Liberty met secretly to discuss the revolution and had to announce the meetings by raising a flag in the town. Students were tasked with creating their own liberty flag with various materials to signal for an upcoming meeting. They had so much fun working with classmates to complete this challenge! We can’t wait to do more activities like this throughout the year.
FIFTH GRADE EXPLORERS
Fifth Grade Science: Fifth grade students had fun investigating the contents of owl pellets. They were studying how scientists can be like detectives in their work when looking at what animals may have consumed as part of their diet. Owl pellets are undigested parts of a bird's food, such as hair, or bones and are fascinating to investigate. Students are currently learning about electricity and magnetism in their first science unit of the year.
SEPTEMBER IS ATTENDANCE AWARENESS MONTH
We want to highlight positive attendance outcomes:
- Students who attend school regularly feel more connected to our community and are engaged in their learning.
- School attendance improves reading proficiency!
- On-time, regular school attendance builds life-long work habits that promote success!
If you have outside circumstances impacting your child’s attendance and would like support, please reach out to our School Counselor, Jennifer Weeks at 470-254-6390.
