Showcase of Learning
Thank you Unified Arts Teachers
This week, third and fourth graders participated in our first showcase of learning for the year. Showcase of Learning is an opportunity for the UA team to offer a special course in an area of passion outside of our normal curriculum and for students to have a voice and choice. Students are presented the course offerings through a Google Site we create and rank their first, second and third choices using a Google Form. If they didn't get their first pick this time, we noted it to make sure they do next time.
Courses that were offered during the first showcase were: Origami, Team Building, Beads and Friendship Bracelets, Scratch (learning to code), Yoga, and Mindful Art (Artmaking and Mindfulness combined).

How do I support my child's reading learning at home? Focus on Phonics
Many families have asked, how can I support my child at home? Lets focus on reading first
1) Based on the i-ready and acadience reports, identify what domain/areas in the report or what you learned from your child's teacher, on what skills is your child learning or still struggling to learn?
2)Remember the elements of reading based on Scarborough's Rope (see below)
3) In the last Hawks Happenings, we focused on home supports for the phonological awareness (sounds) (including phonemic awareness) skills of the reading rope (This is why we teach Heggerty K-1)
4) In this Hawks, we will focus on the home supports to how to build your child's phonics and sight word skills under word recognition (This is why we teach Fundations K-3)
Thank you to our parents/guardians for investing in science of reading materials
2nd part of our Literacy Learning Series- What is phonics?
Amazing Second Graders
Why we teach Fundations?
Research indicates that systematic and explicit plonics instruction is effective for all children. Fundations provides a systematic and explicit approach to reading and spelling with phonics
