St. Columba's Primary School
NEWSLETTER | TERM 1 | WEEK 7 | 14 MARCH 2024
“May the strength of God pilot us, may the wisdom of God instruct us.
May the hand of God protect us, may the word of God direct us.
May thy Salvation, O Lord, be always ours this day and for evermore. Amen.”
Dear St Columba's Parents and Carers,
As we embrace this Lenten season, a period of spiritual reflection and preparation leading up to Easter, our school community is invited to embark on a journey of self-discovery and renewal. During this time, we are encouraged to engage in acts of kindness, deepen our commitment to prayer, and reflect on our individual paths towards personal growth and understanding. This sacred season serves as a reminder of the importance of compassion, humility, and sacrifice in our lives. Let us come together as a school family to support one another in our Lenten endeavours, fostering a sense of unity and purpose. Through collective reflection and thoughtful actions, may this Lenten season be a time of profound spiritual enrichment for each member of our school community.
As we embark on another exciting week of learning and growth at St. Columba's, here are some important updates from Week 7:
Successful Parent Talk on Raising Resilient Kids
This week’s parent talk on raising children to confidently cope with life's normal stresses was a resounding success. We appreciate the engaged participation and insightful discussions. It's heartening to see our community come together to support each other in nurturing resilient and well-rounded individuals.
NAPLAN Testing for Years 3 and 5
This week marks the commencement of NAPLAN testing for our Year 3 and Year 5 students. We wish them the very best and appreciate the hard work and preparation they have put into their studies.
Kimochi Training for Early Childhood Staff
Our commitment to fostering social-emotional learning continues with additional Kimochi training for our early childhood staff. This program aims to enhance the emotional intelligence of our educators, promoting a positive and supportive environment for our youngest learners.

St. Joseph's Day Mass and Celebration - Tuesday, 19 March
Join us in celebrating St. Joseph's Day with a special Mass and festivities on Tuesday, 19 March. It's a wonderful opportunity for our school community to come together in joy and gratitude. As the Sister’s of St Joseph form such an important part of our history we are excited to have Sr Maree (one of our favourite Josephites) visit classrooms this week to share this rich history with our students.
P & F Meeting - Tuesday, 19 March at 7pm
Parents and caregivers, don't forget about our upcoming Parent and Friends (P & F) meeting on Tuesday, 19 March at 7pm. Your participation and ideas are invaluable, and everyone is welcome.
Dad's Camp Out - Saturday, 23 March
Calling all fathers and father figures! Our Dad's Camp Out is scheduled for Saturday, 23 March. Please ensure you fill in the online Working with Children (WWC) declaration form (link below) as part of our Government mandated practices, given that the event takes place on school grounds. Hats off to our Dad’s Group, especially Mel and the team, for making this event possible!
Kiss and Drive Procedures
A reminder to families that parking protocols are to be followed when it comes to parking to ensure the safety of our students. The Kiss and Drive is in operation for all K-6 students. Families are not to park in the church car park as this is for staff and parish users only. Families, please note that you will need to adhere to the school parking policy and the street verge signage. Parking is not permitted in the Church car park or ‘no standing or parking ‘zones and cars that do not follow the street and verge signage face a possible fine from the Ranger.
I would like to inform the community that I will be absent on professional development this Friday, 15 March. During my absence, Mrs. Jescinta Vuckovic, our Assistant Principal, will be in charge.
Thank you for your ongoing support and involvement in the St. Columba's School community. Together, we create an environment where every child can thrive.
Wishing you nothing but green lights!

Feast of St Joseph
The life of St. Joseph reminds us that God’s promises are fulfilled. Let us remember the life of St. Joseph and his response to God’s call.
St. Joseph was the husband of Mary. He was a faithful and prayerful man who loved and trusted God very much. He is honoured and respected as a saint, for he responded to the call of God in the unfolding plan of salvation for all humankind.
The entire Church of God remembers and reflects upon the humble and empowering gifts St. Joseph’s life teaches us.
On Tuesday, 19 March our Year 1-6 classes will celebrate with a Mass, led by our Year 4 students.
Harmony Day
Harmony Week celebrates Australia’s cultural diversity. It focusses on inclusiveness, respect and a sense of belonging for everyone. The theme is EVERYONE BELONGS. St Columba’s will be celebrating this important week on Friday, 22 March, with each class participating in special activities. On Friday, 22 March, students may wear cultural dress, an orange t-shirt and/or suitable orange accessories.
Students will participate in special activities within their classrooms and Years 1-6 will share in a Harmony Day liturgy together on Friday, 22 March.
Edu-Dance Concert
We welcome all parents in PP-Year 6 to attend the Edu-dance Performance Concert on Monday, 25 March, commencing at 2.15pm. Book this date in your diaries!

Cyber Safety Parent Education Session
To further support our parents, we have organised a Cyber Safety Parent Education Session on Wednesday, 27 March at 6pm. We understand that navigating the digital landscape alongside your children can be overwhelming and challenging. That's why we strongly encourage parents, especially with children in the upper primary, to attend the upcoming Cyber Safety Parent Info Night. In today's interconnected world, where technology plays an integral role in our daily lives, it is crucial to stay informed about the potential risks and safeguards for our children online. This event will provide you with valuable insights into the latest trends in online behaviour, potential threats, and practical strategies to ensure your child's safety in the digital realm. Our expert speaker, Paul Litherland, will address common concerns, share essential tips for promoting responsible online behaviour, and guide you through the tools and resources available to create a secure online environment for your family. By attending this informative session, you will not only enhance your own digital literacy but also strengthen your ability to guide and support your children in navigating the online world responsibly.
Please RSVP using the provided link to allow us to identify numbers for this parent education session.
Optimism in Children
Children are naturally optimistic and tend to expect the best out of their experiences. We can all learn from our children’s positive outlook of the world. As significant adults in the lives of our children, we can help to nurture optimism.
“Children who practise optimistic thinking are more resilient, they are less likely to give up in the face of challenge and they tend to interpret experiences in a way that gives them a sense of control and confidence.”

Project Compassion Continues - Let's Get Involved
Spanning across the 6 weeks of Lent each year, Project Compassion brings thousands of Australian schools, parishes and supporters together to raise funds for people living in some of the most vulnerable communities across the world.
Caritas Project Compassion boxes were distributed to classrooms in PP - Y6 to go home with all students.
Students are encouraged to collect any amount of money for this important cause and bring back their Project Compassion boxes with the collected money by the end of Term 1 – Wednesday, 27 March, 2024.
Students are asked to bring back their CARITAS boxes before the end of term, with any amount of money, to their classroom or the front office.
We are excited to be able to make a difference to the lives of those less fortunate this Lent.
The Magic Coat Program (online)
For this weeks Newsletter, Miss Simpson (School Counsellor) has provided some recommendations for parent and child programs plus helpful resources to assist with managing increasing anxiety present amongst children.
Developed by a Counsellor and Teacher (with specialisations in Social science and women and children studies) to help create confident, calm and caring kids who know how to problem solve, feel safe and manage their emotions appropriately promoting good mental health and well being. The Magic Coat is an analogy of an imaginary coat that helps children to feel safe and deal with a number of difficult situations they may come across in their young lives. The strategies for dealing with these situations are taught using a range of workshops and books. The Magic Coat Program is not a free program, but very affordable. Most online workshops are around $35.00 dollars including workshops specifically focused on helping children manage anxiety. The book to follow along with the program is $35.00 to purchase.
Happy Thursday everyone. I hope you are all well.
