Anxiety and How the Media Affects Us
By: Maria
Anxiety is getting more common among kids and teens every day. As this happens our society can be split into two categories: some people think that “it's fake, and all in your head,” so they assume a person’s anxious feelings will go away. Others struggle more to realize what’s real and fake, and they find it hard not to compare their lives to the people they see in the media (tv, movies, social media). This, along with all of the “experts” can cause people to feel badly about themselves.
Every day, books and movies are coming out on how to stand up against bullying or to control your anxiety. They do not always realize that most of the scenarios are unlikely or that their “solution” is probably not going to change the situation. It might even make it worse. Authors and actors might not realize that by putting these ideas out there, they are in fact, ridiculing people who have to live through these scenarios every day. They make it look so easy for someone to control their emotions, reactions, and anxiety as if weren’t that big of deal. For people who suffer, it is a big deal!
Take for example many books about bullying - they always make it seem of as if you can say, “Stop. I don’t like that,” and after that the bully magically stops. In the real world, when it happens, a lot of the time it’s somebody people would consider a bully, but you are expected to let it slide because they say it was just “a joke”.
Another thing most books and movies like to unintentionally mock is anxiety. Sometimes even teachers - while having a talk to one or more students about anxiety and mental health - could accidentally be ignorant to some of the key reasons why somebody would have anxiety. They may try, but they may not know how to help someone who struggles with it.
One of the errors an adult could make is generalizing. This means to talk generally as if everybody has the same reaction about a specific topic. People need to remember that humans can be more complex than they seem. They can be feeling more than one emotion at once, and people often react differently to the same situation. One example of this is divorce. This phenomenon affects 2 out of 5 students (41% of families). Out of all these families you can’t say this situation affected them the same way. It would be extremely offensive to say it made every family depressed or it made every person relieved or it affects everyone in the same bad and good ways.
This shows that people's propaganda can negatively affect the very communities they claim to want to help.
Back in the Nineties! (Part One in our new "Decades" series!)
By: Donovan & John
This article will be all about the 90s and how people lived then. First off, we will start with how they fashioned themselves. They used to wear "jelly" sandals, cargo pants, plaid skirts, and overalls. There were other items, of course, but these were some of the most popular! Some of the music from the 90s was a bit surprising. People listened to pop music like Barbie Girl, I Will Always Love You, No Scrubs, and Wannabe. Check them out if you want to hear the sounds of the nineties! People also liked to watch popular TV shows like Friends and to play video games on consoles like PlayStation and Nintendo 64. It is surprising that the '90s people had PlayStations like we have today! They also used “dial-up internet." They went roller blading, attended concerts, and participated in outdoor activities like playing tag and backyard games. So, al lot of the things they did in the nineties, we still do now!
Veteran's Day Assembly
By: Desean & Donovan
On November 8th there was a Veterans Day assembly at Eastview. Before we knew what was going to happen, there were a couple of clues that helped us guess. First, if you were in the auditorium, you would know that there were chairs and stands on the stage, so there was going to be something with instruments. But with only that information, we did not know what else is going to be in the assembly, so we had to wait to find out. Boy, were we excited to hear students honor our war veterans and why they helped us a lot from long ago until now. We learned interesting facts about veterans and one was there to tell us how they could inspire or impact our lives. We heard so many songs! When the Saints Go Marching In, Fight For the Republic and then the trumpets played Taps! We heard The National Anthem sung by our chorus too! The mayor and the superintendent were there to give a speech about how important veterans are. We hope the mayor will be proud of this school community for hosting this day for the veterans.
We should be proud of the veterans because they fight for us and to make our lives better. Even though their scared or nervous to go to war, they still do it for us and our country. And last but not least I will talk about how us people celebrate Veterans Day. Some people and communities host a whole parade to honor the veterans. Another thing people do is something called “wreath-laying ceremonies”. If you don’t know what that is - basically a wreath is laid at the tomb of the unknown soldier at Arlington National Cemetery in honor of all veterans. Something you can do is visit veterans at hospitals or nursing homes which will make them happy. Finally, schools, businesses, and government offices hold events to show gratitude to veterans. That is how we celebrate Veterans Day.
Climate Change
By: Isaac
Climate change is an interesting topic, to say the least. It has affected the world in many ways. Climate change is literally sinking Miami along with other factors that are contributing to the sink, Italy’s very own Venice is also at risk of sinking. Climate change is also causing extreme weather events like hurricanes, and it is also making it so clean drinking water is harder to get. Climate change is very much effecting communities close to oceans because the oceans are pulling houses into it. Droughts (which are when there is a lack of rain/water in an area) are coming more often. Not to mention it’s been seventy degrees lately which is also caused by climate change, it should not be seventy degrees in fall! This is also called global worming, which is mostly caused by pollution. Climate change is horrible, and the sad thing is that we are contributing to it, but luckily some people are trying to help the world.
Different Recess Games at Eastview
By: Zadie
When the doors burst open and about two hundred kids run onto the playground for twenty minutes of freedom with all the excitement you suddenly realize you have absolutely no idea what you are going to do for your recess. If this has ever happened to you you will understand how annoying this feeling is, so I have made this list of games you can play at recess so you don’t have to experience that feeling of boredom again.
1. Basketball. Basketball is a fun game to with simple rule. You can play many games with a basketball such as HORSE, King of the court, Around the world, Knock out, and many other games.
2. Box ball. Box ball is a great game to play and you are able to join in a game and play even if you have never played before.
3. Volleyball. Volleyball is a game where you can join and enjoy it is a very inclusive game that is a great for if you don’t know what to play for recess.
4. Soccer. Soccer is a fun competitive game that you can enjoy with easy rules and some effort and you will have an amazing recess.
5. Football. Football may be a little aggressive but that doesn’t make it any less fun football is also a great game to improve your teamwork and sportsmanship .
6. Tag. Tag is a classic game that you can play in many versions and enjoy each one.
We are all very lucky we have these options for our recess because only a few years ago you didn’t have anything to do at recess except just hang around and I think playing games is way better than just standing around.
Why is BRAWL STARS So Popular?
By Antoine
Hey, students of Eastview! Today, I’m writing about Brawl Stars. A lot of people play it. Some have no idea what that is! The point is, I want to know why it is so popular. It’s time to start!
Recently (three months ago), I started playing Brawl Stars. Brawl Stars is a game where you battle people with animated characters to gain trophies, skins, and upgrades for characters called Brawlers. As soon as I played, I knew I was addicted. Fast forward back to school: nearly all my friends (and a lot of people I don’t know) were playing! Before long, I had entire conversations with people and started friending them (online and in real life). I started to wonder: Why? I wanted to get to the bottom of it. Here are some facts: Brawl Stars was released nearly six years ago. Back then, not a lot of people played. When I started, Brawl Stars was at its peak. To get people to play, the company decided to do a few things:
Brawl Stars was inspired by the success of other games like it, so they decided to spend money to get more players.
Brawl Stars decided to create “events”, where characters, skins, and battles were introduced. These events are often themed and might be based on a real-life thing.
Brawl Stars added more features, C and changed the way you get rewards to make it easier and more enjoyable.
In Brawl Stars, even if you’re short on time, you can still play many matches, which are often under three minutes.
Brawl Stars introduced special moves for characters and made a season pass with rewards as you advance.
The surprise in battle and craving for trophies, new Brawlers and rewards, just adds to the overall game.
These reasons helped Brawl Stars become popular. Brawl Stars was named Supercell’s most popular app. It had over 47 million downloads. If you ever wondered about this (if you haven’t, I don’t blame you), now you know! Whenever you feel like it, download Brawl Stars and experience what I (and millions of kids & adults) have!
Winter Holidays
By: Desean
Thanksgiving just passed, and there are a lot of different holidays are coming up like Christmas, Hanukkah, and Kwanza, as well as many others. These holidays are all important to different groups of people with different cultures and religions. Christmas and Hanukkah are big holidays for kids because we can get what we want and eat delicious foods -- and drink hot cocoa. I think that most kids used to hate when they got clothes. If you think about it, clothes are important to us. This is because clothes are to look cool and to match. So clothes aren’t that bad now when you get them.
Thanksgiving is a holiday where each family makes a type of food for the occasion, and people enjoy talking and eating together. Kwanzaa is a celebration of culture and family values. All of these holidays are a time to get together and have fun with others.
Holidays have symbols. Halloween and Thanksgiving have pumpkins involved in the holiday. Pumpkins are carved for Halloween, and people make pumpkin pies and other foods and drinks with pumpkin involved on Thanksgiving. Lights and candles are symbols of Hanukkah and Kwanzaa while Christmas usually makes people think of evergreen trees.
Whatever holidays you celebrate, it is an exciting time of year for everyone!
Why Don't People Go to the Movies Anymore
By: John
Have you noticed that there are a lot of things that seem way too expensive? Some examples are houses, groceries... and today's topic: movies and the downfall of them. Why aren't people able to afford going to the cinema? What is making it so gosh-darn expensive? Well, we're going to find out.
First, this isn't a new thing! For some reason theaters have had ludacrous prices. I mean in AMC theaters, concessions sales are a quarter of the money they make every year! So, imagine this: You're seeing the newest movie that everybody been talking about. This feels like a once in a lifetime opportunity and you don't what to miss out on it. You drive to your local theater, pay $11.50 or more for your ticket, but in that moment your stomach growls. You must eat! You think you can get something before its starts, so you don't starve for another two and a half hours. You buy an Icee and a popcorn. An Icee for five dollars and a popcorn that is more than ten! Now your credit card has a rude awakening as you find out that you just spend 30 bucks for a ticket abd snack! Snd that's not all! Remember this just you going to the movies... solo-dolo, single, alone... So really, you're looking at $120.00 dollars for a family of four! Cost is a big factor of why people do not go very often. The average person or family in the medium range can probably only see a movie once a month. This a huge problem because every Friday a new movie comes out, and most people can't afford to see all of them. This stinks! Even if the movie is fantastic, you might just not have enough to go see it.
Another reason for people not going to the movies is the rise of streaming. Back in the day, movies were in the movies for a long time. I'm not joking - Back to the Future was released on July 3. 1985, and it didn't leave theaters until January 5, 1986. Six months was a lot of time to see a movie. These days, it's a quarter of that time at max! Movies quickly move to streaming services. This might not be enough time for everyone to see it in the movies. I can't blame them though - why pay cases full of money for a theatrical reel when you can watch the same movie on your couch on Netflix. Some people would just rather wait for it to drop on Prime Video.
So in conclusion these are the biggest two reasons why there are less moviegoers seeing movies in the theater.
Music news
Dave Mathew's is now in rock and rolls all of fame . Ariana Grande makes a come back and movies and television with her lead roll as Gilda in wicked I've seen the play on Broadway and I hope its as good has the stage play
Were the Tortoise and the Hare the Best Available Examples, Aesop?
By: Isaac, Benjamin, & Zadie
Did you know that the cheetah, the black marlin and the peregrine falcon are some of the fastest water, land, and air animals? Read on to find out some fun facts about each of these super-fast movers!
Cheetah
The cheetah can reach to about 68.0–75.0 mph in average. One fun fact is that cheetahs actually don’t roar but they are able to growl, purr, chirp, and make a noise that sounds like they are barking. Cheetahs are endangered and there are only about 7,500 left in the world. When cheetahs are hunting, they look for hunt medium sized prey like gazelles, hares, and impalas. Cheetahs bodies also helps them to hunt since cheetahs have long legs it helps them to have bigger strides and since their feet pads are hard and less rounded it makes it easier to have more traction on sharp turns.
Black Marlin
The black marlin is one of the largest fish in the sea as well as one of the fastest. Marlins have a sword-like upper jaw which they use to stun fish and slash them. Black marlins live in tropical coastal waters of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. Black marlins live to about 11 years. Some black marlins can be up to 15 feet long and weigh around1,650 pounds. Black marlins can be dark blueish black or silver. Black marlins eat other fish but no other fish prey on them. Some black marlins can go up to 80 mph! That’s even faster than people should drive their cars!
Peregrine Falcon
The peregrine falcon can be found on every continent except for Antarctica. It is the fastest bird in the world, with a diving speed of over 190 miles per hour. The Peregrin Falcon’s diet is mostly other birds such as starlings, pigeons, blackbirds, jays, shorebirds, and waterfowl. The Peregrin Falcon is about the size of a crow with a length of 15 to 20 inches and a wing span of 38 to 44 inches.
On the other hand, Starfish, Garden Snails, and Sea Anemones are among the world’s slowest animals. You have to watch for a while to see these guys moving from place to place!
Starfish
Everyone knows what starfish are, but how much do people really know about them? Starfish can “run” about 0.005 miles per hour, or you could also say this as 15 centimeters per minute. The average human can run 6 miles per hour. So starfish are very slow. If it wanted to move faster it would need to use the ocean currents. A cool fact is that starfish are actually related to sea urchins. They eat by doing the most disgusting thing we have ever heard: they push their own stomach outside of them to digest whatever they eat. They most commonly eat mollusks, and coral.
Garden Snails
Garden snails live in the wild for about two to five years, but if they are being cared for in captivity, they can live up to 14 years. Rats and other small mammals like to eat garden snails. During hot, weather garden snails go into summer hibernation called aestivation. They close up their shells and attach it to rocks or trees in shady areas. After the weather cools down, they will go back to their normal activities. Garden snails eat the leaves, stems, and bark of many plants. They also like young plants and leafy crops like lettuce. Garden snails also have 14,000 teeth that are microscopic!
Sea Anemone
Sea Anemones are said to be the slowest moving animal in the world. That’s right – clap it up for 1 centimeter per hour! That is less than half an inch! Sea Anemones use their tentacles to catch food. They sting the prey and then guide the food into its mouth. They wait for fish to swim by and that’s when they strike. It’s so weird to think how fast we move compared to them. A lot of the time they stay attached to rocks or coral. They can be from 0.5 inches to 6 feet in size. The lifespan for a sea anemone can depend on the species but some can live to 100 years!
As we looked into the fastest and slowest animals on Earth, we had a lot of fun learning about new animals! We hope you enjoyed this too!

BOOK/MOVIE REVIEWS
MEXIKID by Pedro Martin
By Antoine & Reuven
These days, we all want to read (some, more than most). Sometimes, it’s hard to know what to read. A lot of the time, we want drawings and action. Luckily, there was a genius by the name Rodolphe Töpffer, who invented the comic strip. His invention brings kids (and adults) joy to this day. One such creation was Mexikid by Pedro Martín. It is a legendary creation, a must-read for all children. Another reason to read is because you can use it for book reports:) Moving on...
Mexikid: A Quick Summary
At its heart, Mexikid is an autobiography, but not one of those books that make you think it’s about some kooky old geezer. This is a graphic novel (comic.)
At the beginning, the main character, Pedro Martín is a Mexican American child living in Watsonville, California. He lives with his two sisters, six brothers, and his Apá and his Amá. He and his family go on a road trip, but not one of those fun-packed ones. This is “cheap Mexican dad road trip spending.” The purpose of the road trip is to bring his abuelito (grandfather) back to America. On the way to Mexico, their donation bundles for the poor were confiscated by border guards who thought it was American contraband. After many hours of sighing and sadness, the family spends time in their parents’ hometown of Pegueros. Once they arrive, they are greeted by a small army of cousins. During their stay Pedro learns more about his abuelito’s past and gets an atrocious haircut of the Mexican Fonzie (Ask your parents. We had too.) He then meets his grandfather, an ancient and incredibly strong old man. His older siblings then leave to back to America (with no adults) because of exams. Pedro and his younger brothers then learn that they must rescue his grandmother’s bones from her flooded grave. After rescuing her, it was time for Abuelito to leave Mexico for America. On the way back, a car crashed into a deer, which they then rescued and brought into their minivan. The deer turns out to be alive but has a badly broken hoove. After a failed amputation by Pedro, they kill it and make it into birria, where his grandfather applauds Pedro’s bravery. THE END
Mexikid: Intro to the Characters
(A.S.N. = American Style Name)
- Apa (A-S. N.* Dad) - Apa has crazy qualities including farming, a crack shot with the slingshot, an inventor, and being the typical Mexican dad. He also had a troubled past where his mom died, and he ran away to get money for the family.
- Ama (A-S. N. Mom)/Mercedes - Ama is a woman of many talents, such as being a healer for any wound, plays the harmonica, and is just an all-around mom. She is also a banana enthusiast.
- Salvador (A-S N. Sal) - Sal is the oldest brother of nine kids. He is a science lover and could grow a beard. Sadly, he doesn’t want to.
- Liduina (A-S N. Lila) - Lila is the oldest sister of 2 sisters. She is a very enthusiastic historian, fills any conversation with learning, and loves the environment. Yay!
- Leon (A-S. N. Leon) and Noe (A-S. N. Noe) - Leon is the third oldest of the family. Noe is the fourth oldest. They love everything cute and cuddly. Fake. They love punching and pranking. Got you there, didn’t I?
- Ruth (A-S. N. Ruth) - Ruth is the last out of 2 sisters. She is an adventurer, business-minded and a ghost whisperer. Creepy.
- Hugo (A-S. N. Hugo) - Hugo is the fifth oldest brother. He loves guitars and plays it well. Best in the family. Also, the only guitar player in the family.
- Alejandro (A-S. N. Alex) and Adan (A-S. N. Adam) - Adam is the second youngest. Alex is the youngest and the baby. Depends how you look at it. Both are on the team of Ama's favorite kids. An example of favoritism.
- Pedro (A-S. N. Peter) - Peter is the third youngest in the family. He loves comic books, action figures and God (the TV). He is also slow, weird and lives in a fantasy world. These are his sibling’s words.
The Wild Robot: A Comparative Book and Movie Review
By Reuven & Antoine
The Movie
The Wild Robot movie is a work of art about a robot who is lost on an island with no memory of how she got there. The animals are less than hospitable, and she loses a foot on the way. She accidentally crashes into a bird nest and kills everything inside, except for an egg, which a fox named Fink tries to steal. The egg soon hatches into a gosling, which the robot (called Roz) deems Brightbill.
Roz learns the challenges of motherhood with the help of Fink and a mother opossum with her seven kids. Brightbill, not having been raised by normal parents (understatement) doesn't fit in among the other animals and is mocked and bullied. He learns that Roz is the one that kills his parents, and he scorns Roz. He must learn to accept what Roz Has done because he needs her help to fly the migration. To find out more watch the movie. (I’ve always wanted to right a cliffhanger.)
The Book
The Wild Robot book is equally as good, if not better than the movie. Roz is stuck in a box until she arrives at a mysterious island. Once she is freed, she has a not-so-warm welcome from the island’s animals. A storm pushes her out of her first sleeping spot and bears live in the other. She learns slowly and surely from the unlikeliest sources: an opossum and the stick insect. Roz goes unnoticed for days. However, the animals still hate her. This soon changes, though. She helps a fox after a painful attack. After causing a family geese's death, she discovers an egg. After it hatches, she needs help to take care of it. Roz gets help from the local geese. She even gets help from the beavers to build a house for the goose, who is named Brightbill. After this, the animals accept her and adore her. Brightbill makes friends, learns to fly, and learns how to swim. Brightbill soon leaves for the migration, and while he was gone, the winter began.
Animals were forced out of their hibernation places because of snow and freezing temperatures. Roz has to teach animals how to make fires and must build homes to create safe places for the animals. After that, she solves one problem after another. Brightbill comes back and tells the troubled story of their migration. Roz is very nearly broken after an encounter with bears, that ends up with their respect. In the end, Roz is discovered by her creators, and huge robots come with rifles and come destroy Roz. The animals take them down, but only Roz’s head and torso are left. She makes a tough decision to leave the animals for their safety. She makes a dramatic escape in a sleek white airship. To find out more, read all three books by Peter Brown. (Found in bookstores and on Amazon.)
Both the movie and book(s) are great, but it's up to you to decide! Find the differences and similarities (if you want to.) Enjoy!

What are the Favorite Snacks at Eastview?
By: Ophelia
Students of Eastview we were wondering what your favorite snacks are. We are going to interview three students to see their opinions. We will host a poll for you guys to share your ideas - pick from the choice, decide your favorite, and make a choice! We will report back concluding with what the best snack is.
Donovan: “I like Takis because the flavor, powder, spice.”
Donovan has chosen an extremely popular favorite snack. For example, I have seen many people with Takis at lunch, and I always see other students asking for some.
- In my opinion there are many great snacks, and Takis is one of them. Just like Donovan said “the spice, flavor, and Taki powder,” are the best features in Takis.
Valyntina: “My favorite snack is Hot Cheetos because it has so many flavors, and I like that it is so crunchy, but above all, I like the spice.
- Once again Valyntina has a majorly popular favorite snack. I think many other people would agree with her, including myself, that the flavor Hot Cheetos is amazing.
Charlotte: “My favorite snack is Cheez-it's because it is the perfect combo of savory and crunchy.”
- Charlotte has a little less of a popular opinion of a favorite snack because spicy is so popular now, but Cheez-it's are the GOAT childhood snack! We all know we have loved our Cheez-its (unless you are allergic to dairy).
Take the poll that is here by clicking the link below. Soon we will know what all of Eastview students think about this tasty choice! Takis, Hot Cheetos, or Cheez-its?
