SMHS "Mathletes" Plot Their Way to the Top
Forestdale 1st Graders Celebrate Their Writing
On Friday, January 31st, grade 1 students at Forestdale held a Writers Celebration inviting in families, staff, and other classrooms throughout the building, to present/read their reports on a chosen Wild and Endangered Animal from ARC/English language arts readings. Student reports included information on: their animals characteristics, habitat, life cycle, food web, behaviors , and their classification. Students hand-wrote their reports with pictures to accompany their writings.
Families and staff were able to rotate throughout the rooms and listen to all students read their report. Families and staff were able to write compliments on students' readings. Classrooms had students create 3D replicas of their animal while some rooms used the program Book Creator to allow families to scan a QR code allowing technological access to hear the student read their report.
A big thanks to Forestdale ELA Instructional Coach Amy Tierney and Elementary Technology Integration Specialist Amy Kneller for their support of 1st grade classrooms during this project.

🩺 From the Nurse's Office
Gastrointestinal Illness
On February 3, 2025, the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (MDPH) issued a reminder to educators and healthcare providers to be aware of seasonal gastrointestinal illnesses and respond accordingly.
“Gastrointestinal (GI) illness season in Massachusetts usually starts in late fall and runs through the spring. GI illness is a general term that refers to diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, or abdominal cramps, usually caused by an infection. GI illness outbreaks are commonly caused by norovirus, a very contagious virus that causes a sudden onset of vomiting and diarrhea. Norovirus infections usually last about 1 to 3 days, but people can spread the virus for days after they feel better” (MDPH, 2025).
If your child is experiencing gastrointestinal symptoms, we ask that you refer to the symptom checklist below provided by the MDPH when determining if your child should attend school, see a physician, or return to school after an absence. When in doubt, consult your family health care provider or your child's school nurse.
