No School - Friday, October 25 - Conference Prep Day
No School - Friday, November 8 - Fall Conferences
Boo Bash is Here!
Today is the day! Horace Mann School will be transformed for the Boo Bash Fall Festival this evening, 5-8pm! The whole family is invited, and costumes are welcome! There is no entry fee, but tickets are sold to participate in the various activities... carnival games, a classic haunted house (rated PG) and Junior House of Horrors (an all-ages touch-and-feel experience), neon glow party, crafts, food, and Bootique. Tickets will be available throughout the event, for $1 each. Please join us for a night of spooky fun fundraising - all proceeds go towards sending our 5th grade class to Eagle Bluff Environmental Learning Center for a week in May. Thank you for your support!
It's Time to Sign Up for Conferences
We love to meet all the families in person for conferences. We also believe there are reasons a family might need a virtual Google Meet conference. We want to accommodate everyone’s needs. We are able to offer one conference per family per child (due to our student numbers and the short time dedicated for conferences).
If you need a virtual conference, please reach out to your child's teacher. They may want to keep virtual conferences grouped together at a particular time.

- Recycle food, clean and stack dishes, and toss garbage
- Clean tables, clean up, and assist at dismissal

Horace Mann is hosting a Ridwell plastic film drive!
Horace Mann is keeping plastic film out of landfills with Ridwell this fall! You’re invited to bring plastic film (ziptop bags, grocery bags, bubble wrap, and lots more) to school on November 1st and Ridwell will make sure it stays out of landfills. Start collecting plastic film now so you have a bunch to bring on 11/1!
Bring your plastic film at drop-off or pick-up on November 1st and we will have students outside to collect it from you!
This info sheet explains what plastic film is and why it’s hard to recycle, and this video shows a ton of examples. All the plastic film we collect during the drive will be turned into Trex decking!
Curious about Ridwell at-home recycling pickup? They collect hundreds of common household items you can’t recycle curbside, like plastic food packaging, lightbulbs, clothes, Styrofoam, and more. You can help the school earn rewards if you sign up for a household membership by December 15. We’ll earn pickup of the school’s plastic film all spring when 10 new members sign up!
Find out more at https://get.ridwell.com/hms —it’s a unique link just for our school, so when you sign up there, your membership counts toward our totals. You can share it with friends and family, too, and their membership will also count! (Just make sure they live in a Ridwell service area.) Questions? Email stuart.tasia@gmail.com.
Fall Gardens Clean Up- Come One Come All
Come join the Landscape Committee, teachers, and lots of Horace Mann families on Saturday November 2nd from 9-12.
Spend a few hours weeding, raking and enjoying this gorgeous fall weather! No gardening experience needed and stay for as long as you are able. If you have gardening supplies, please bring them - gloves, rakes, shovels, wheelbarrows and those cool dandelion diggers are always welcome!
Your hard work will help make our school more beautiful and help teachers provide safe spaces for environmental education this spring. We will have coffee, juice & donuts too!
If you have questions, please reach out to Eric Zakovich (ericzakovich@yahoo.com) or Hannah Ryan (hannah.ryan@spps.org).

HMS PTA News and Announcements
READ-A-THON
Horace Mann's Read-A-Thon is coming soon! During the month of November, students will track how many minutes they read per day to contribute to our school's goal of 600,000 minutes.
During this month, the student's goal is to find new ways to make reading a part of the day. Students will read in the morning, read at night, read something new, read something old, read to themselves, read to others, and read with family to make every minute count! If students can collectively read 600,000 minutes, the “Principal Challenge” will be unlocked.
More information will be sent home with students in a Read-a-thon packet.
YEARBOOK
The Yearbook needs your photos! The HMS community wants to see all those smiling faces and include them in the yearbook to capture favorite memories. Don't wait until the spring to send in your photos. You can send them as you take them! Email all photos to yearbook@hms-pta.org. Please include your child's grade and teacher in the subject line.
SCHOLASTIC BOOK FAIR DURING CONFERENCES: NOVEMBER 7th - 12th IN THE HORACE MANN LIBRARY
Come down to the Horace Mann Library during school conferences to pick out your books. Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them to become stronger readers. Students will receive a flier for the fair from their classroom teacher. Reward your student’s success and help the school; every book purchased earns rewards for our school library!
If you have any questions about the Scholastic Book Fair, please contact Annie Mach at annielmach@gmail.com.
MAKE IT TAKE IT CRAFT NIGHT - Save the Date! Thursday, Dec 5th from 5pm-7pm
Bring the entire family to Holleran Hall (Horace Mann cafeteria) for this FREE night of seasonal crafting for kids, sponsored by the Horace Mann School PTA! More details on this year's great projects and an RSVP form will be shared in Perspectives in November.
Please note this is not a drop off event - all kids must be accompanied by an adult.
