Simple strategies for teaching kids behavior
PAX Tools is the home and community companion to the PAX Good Behavior Game that is used in schools, utilizing the same science and applying it in a way that encourages nurturing environments in settings outside the classroom.
These strategies help parents and caregivers to reduce conflict and improve relationships with children in their care. These strategies are simple and can be utilized with children of any age.
Below are summer ideas and fun ways to use PAX Tools, while staying safe!
PAX Tools Strategy: Low Emotional Response
Instructions for use of low emotional responses
We can reduce misbehaviors by responding to them with a low emotional response. Low emotion or private reprimands help give corrective feedback without intense emotion.
Use low emotional responses any time you need to cue children to correct their behavior or discretely reinforce a corrected or positive behavior.
Additional PAX Resources
In addition to this Recipe Card, parents can also access the following resources at no cost to support their use of PAX Tools strategies at home:

PAX Tools Strategy: Random Sticks
Use Random Sticks to help with chores throughout the summer! Write all your household chores on craft sticks. Pick from the sticks to assign daily or weekly chores. To change things up, have kids choose their Random Sticks. This strategy ensures fairness for children and allows adults to depend on the random process to assign work.
PAX Tools Strategy: Low Emotional Response
Use family game night as a way to introduce Low Emotional Response. Play Summer Charades with your kids, have them use their hands to act out each charade. This can be used as a teaching moment to talk to your children about using our hands to communicate. Showing them a simple thumbs up is a way of saying "Great job, keep up the great work". Showing a thumbs down is a quick "check yourself". Once the child changes their behavior they should be given an immediate thumbs up! This strategy provides a low emotional response to children's behavior.
PAX Tools Strategy: Random Sticks
Family Night! Plan to make a family Random Stick/Mystery Motivator container over the summer! Use chalk or craft paint to paint a coffee canister. Brainstorm ideas and write on craft sticks to choose when you catch someone being a PAX Leader. Allow kids to provide suggestions for Mystery Motivators and even encourage your children to "catch" their siblings being a PAX Leader to earn a Mystery Motivator!
