Summer Internship Application Now Open
The online 2019 Summer Internship application is now open for juniors and seniors. The summer internship is a six- to eight-week paid experience with a local business or industry in a career field related to the student's area of study or interest.
Most internships are paid $10.00 per hour and work between 20-40 hours for six to eight weeks in the summer. The program begins in early June. Most businesses are flexible with a summer vacation if planned in advance. Students are supervised during the internship by one of our Work Based Learning supervisors who checks in on students and communicates with the business to make sure all is going well. Students are required to create a portfolio during the experience and take part in a presentation at the end of the internship.
Hamblen County offers programs of study in 13 of the 16 state recognized career clusters. Efforts are made to find internships in as many career fields as possible, including advanced manufacturing, health science, machining, electrical, information technology, accounting, marketing, and other related jobs.
The Tickle College of Engineering at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is implementing a summer engineering program for students during the summer of 2019 entitled “High School Introduction to Engineering Systems for 12th Graders (HITES12).” HITES12 is a one-week residential program for rising twelfth grade students. All students are encouraged to apply.
The program's mission is to provide early exposure to scientific study and research for students who show an interest in engineering. Thirty-two students will be selected to participate in the program to be held July 7-12, 2019. Hands-on activities will spark an interest in the world of engineering and allow students to explore career opportunities. Throughout the program, participants will be challenged to apply what they have learned in engineering competitions. Participants will receive room and board at no cost. All applicants must have a minimum ACT math score of 25 (SAT math score of 590). Counselors will assist with program activities and supervision of participants.
Application Deadline: April 12, 2019
Coolridge Scholarship
The Coolidge Scholarship is an annually awarded, full-ride, presidential scholarship that covers a student’s tuition, room, board, and expenses for four years of undergraduate study. The Coolidge may be used by recipients at any accredited American college or university. Anyone of any background, pursuing any academic discipline of study, may apply to this non-partisan, need-blind, program.
Students apply for the Coolidge Scholarship during their junior year of high school. Finalists are flown in for a finalist weekend at the Coolidge Historic Site in Plymouth Notch, Vermont where they interview with the Coolidge Scholars Finalist Jury. Recipients of the Coolidge Scholarship are notified of their award late in their junior year, before college application (note: current high school seniors are not eligible to apply). Finalists who are not named Coolidge Scholars are eligible to receive a smaller, one-time, college scholarship. The deadline is January 23, 2019.
Information and application is available on-line.
FAFSA is due February 1st!!!
Please remember that the FAFSA is FREE!! There are many internet scams which require payment to file a FAFSA. You should never have to pay for any part of this process.
After submitting the FAFSA, a student should be sure that he/she receives 2 e-mails: one verifying that the FAFSA was submitted and another stating that the FAFSA was processed.

Tennessee Promise Community Service
WHAT COUNTS AS COMMUNITY SERVICE? Community service is time contributed to a nonprofit or public service organization. The community should be benefiting from the work you do! Students can also volunteer in their field of interest to gain experience. This means that job shadowing may count toward your community service requirement. Make sure you are volunteering with an actual organization (not an individual), you are not being paid, you are being supervised by someone who is not a family member and your activity does not include proselytizing (sharing faith). Click here for more information and for community service and job shadowing opportunities on the TN Promise website.
Also, many opportunities are posted on the bulletin board right outside of the counseling office (see picture below)!!
HOW DO I SUBMIT MY COMMUNITY SERVICE HOURS? All community service hours must be submitted through the community service online form found here. After submitting your community service hours, you will receive a confirmation email. Print this e-mail as proof that you completed your hours - you will need this to earn points for your Work Ethic Diploma!
Work Ethic Diploma
One important milestone that many of our seniors have the ability to reach is successful completion of the Work Ethic Diploma (WED). Last year, about ( ) percent of the Class of 2018 was awarded the WED, and we plan to surpass that percentage this year! Students who reach this milestone are recognized at graduation by wearing with royal blue cords with their graduation regalia. They will also receive an invitation to the Senior Honors Banquet.
Students received their Work Ethic Diploma folders during TNN in October. With the help of some new videos (you can find them here), students will be tackling one standard at a time. Click on the links below for more information. Work Ethic Diploma and necessary documentation is due to TNN teachers on April 13. Please contact the counseling office if you have any questions about the Work Ethic Diploma.
University of Georgia VetCAMP 2019
