English Department
Students in English classes are continuing to develop and build their reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. This is especially important as 11th grade students prepare for the ELA state assessment, IB students prepare for their respective IB assessments, and AP students prepare for the AP Language and Composition Exam and AP Literature and Composition Exam. For college prep English courses, students will be prepared for the next year in high school, but for those graduating, have the skills necessary to succeed in college-level courses.
IB students were able to watch A Noise Within’s production of Macbeth. This was a great opportunity to experience a professional production of Shakespeare’s play set in a small, intimate theatre setting. Even though the setting of the play shifts to New Orleans, the plot maintains to the original play and students were exposed to Shakespeare’s language through the use of monologues and soliloquies. They were able to identify motifs and have a better understanding of why Shakespeare’s works are still relevant today. English 12 classes read Macbeth during second semester. In Mr. Falk’s senior classes, students will perform portions of the play in groups or individually recite a soliloquy. In previous years, students enjoy dressing up, incorporating props, and embodying characters who are iconic on stage like the Witches who chant, “Double, double, toil and trouble.” A summative assessment like this evaluates students’ interpretive and analytical skills with the play, but also reinforces ELA listening and speaking standards.
While most senior classes are studying Macbeth, AP Literature is currently reading Othello. Students are currently diving into the complexity of Iago’s manipulation of the titular character, Othello, and analyzing the nuances of language. It is a study of both rhetoric and literary and figurative elements while also closely examining human nature and behavior. As the classes finish up Act III, they will be assessed through an in-class essay and continue to practice multiple choice questions in order to prepare for the AP Exam in May.
After piloting two publishers, the English teachers in the District recommended adopting Savvas MyPerspectives at the high school level. All English teachers will receive training for the updated textbook next month, which will be implemented during the 2025-2026 school year. Students will be able to access more diversity in texts, but continue to receive the rigor from a curriculum centered around the standards.
Read Across America
In celebration of Dr. Seuss' birthday, Mrs. Vasey’s 2nd period English 9 honors class spent a day sharing the magic of reading with Mrs. Aranda’s kindergarten class from Killian Elementary. The celebration opened with the 9th grade students reading their favorite Dr Seuss classics, such as The Cat in the Hat and There’s a Wocket in my Pocket, to small groups of kindergarteners. The timeless tales captivated the imaginations of both our readers and their young audience members. Afterwards, each Killian student was paired with one of our Rowland students to spend some time practicing their freshly developed reading skills. The kindergarteners were excited to pick books from the vast array of children’s classics our library staff had on hand for them. As the pages turned and the stories unfolded, laughter filled the room, creating a joyous atmosphere of learning. Our students not only read with kindergarteners, but they also engaged them in interactive discussions about the stories, encouraging curiosity and imagination. The library staff gifted each kindergartener some green eggs and ham slime to remember the fun day. As Dr. Seuss himself once said, "The more that you read, the more things you will know. The more that you learn, the more places you'll go." Let us continue to inspire and empower the next generation through the magic of reading!
