News from the Principal
Greetings WE Families,
Tonight is Curriculum Night. Please join us at 6 p.m. in the auditorium. We will have introductions and PTA announcements, then you will join your child’s teacher in their classroom to enjoy a Crew meeting and learn about your child’s class and learning this year. We will bring our time together to a close at 7:30 p.m.
You will be hearing more about parent-teacher conferences. You will be provided a time to come in and meet with your child’s teacher and hear about their start to school and the progress they have already made. Conferences will be scheduled between September 30th and October 11th.
We are looking forward to having our first Community Circle with families. Please join us in the auditorium at 8:20 this Friday morning. Families will line up along the perimeter of the auditorium. The students and staff will come in and take their places in the auditorium. At the conclusion of the Community Circle, we will wave goodbye to the families as we begin our closing song. We ask that all family members exit the building at that time. Students will then return to class to continue with their learning.

Reminders
School Lunch Policy: Please be sure to maintain a positive lunch balance for your child. This will help us avoid any unexpected lunch changes for students. Check your Parent Portal frequently to make sure your child has adequate funds for the cafeteria. You may also find the Parent Portal app (for Apple or Android) to be more convenient.
First Grade CogAT Testing Starts September 4
From September 4-6, all first grade students will be taking the Cognitive Abilities Test (CogAT). Unlike traditional achievement tests, which measure how well a student has learned the curriculum, the CogAT assesses a child’s ability to reason abstractly and recognize patterns and relationships in the world around them. Teachers can use CogAT scores to better understand a child’s pattern of strengths and weaknesses. Our school district also uses CogAT scores to identify academically gifted students.
Important Information about Gifted Review
Each fall semester, the Gifted Review Team looks at existing student data to discuss students’ needs and determine if further evaluation for gifted identification is needed. If you are interested in having the team discuss your child’s needs, you may complete a Recommendation for Review Form (found at the website below) and turn it in to the Gifted & Talented Specialist at your child’s school before Wednesday, October 2. No additional information is needed.
The Gifted & Talented Specialist for Westchester Elementary is Jennifer Querubin. For more detailed information about the review process and to obtain a copy of the Recommendation for Review Form, please contact the Gifted & Talented Specialist for your school at jquerubin@csdecatur.net or visit the following website: https://www.csdecatur.net/Page/581.
