RIDER REPORT

Superintendent's Corner
With the arrival of a new season, it feels like Ichabod Crane is entering a period of celebration. While we celebrate achievements, big and small, every day, this time of year ushers in a period of even more frequent and visible celebrations.
We are so proud to announce the Class of 2024 Valedictorian and Salutatorian – David Oldrich and Grace Perito. Meeting them and discussing their remarkable achievements and future plans was an honor. They serve as exceptional role models for their peers, with bright futures ahead.
Over the past couple of months, we've witnessed many of our student artists – in visual and performing arts – take center stage for their incredible work. This has included numerous art exhibitions and musical performances. These public recognitions not only highlight our students' talents but also underscore the importance of arts in education and their enduring impact on learning.
Additionally, we had two Ichabod Crane Odyssey of the Mind (OM) teams compete at the regional level in March. Stay tuned to learn more about this extraordinary project-based learning extracurricular and how our students and families can get involved next year.
These are just a few examples of the amazing accomplishments and acknowledgments that we have experienced at ICC over the last few months. I look forward to this new season and all of the celebrations to come.

Class of 2024 Valedictorian & Salutatorian
We're thrilled to announce David Oldrich as the Valedictorian and Grace Perito as the Salutatorian of the Class of 2024!
High School Principal Craig Shull commended them, stating, "David and Grace are diligent students who have set and achieved impressive goals. They're not only academically outstanding but also kind, caring and sensitive individuals. They care about their fellow classmates, their teachers, family and their community."
Mr. Shull continued, "They're respected by peers and staff alike, exemplifying the qualities we value in our Ichabod Crane Riders. I'm confident they'll succeed and make a positive impact on our world."
David, an Ichabod Crane student since kindergarten, has a passion for math and science. He aims to study engineering in college.“I enjoy solving problems and trying to understand how the natural world works around us,” he shared.
His ICC journey includes memorable experiences at Model UN conferences in Boston, where he connected with people from across the world, collaborating toward common goals in simulations of international relations.
An avid runner, David actively participates in track, indoor track and cross country teams. He's also involved in National Honor Society, Interact Club, Marching Band, Boy Scouts, Ski Club and Habitat for Humanity Club.
His advice to his fellow Riders: "Try your best, explore clubs, activities and sports. Take risks and seize opportunities. You won't know unless you try. Accumulate as many experiences as possible."
Grace became a Rider in the first grade, after her family relocated for her father’s job. With a passion for math and science, she aspires to study chemical engineering in college. "I'm fascinated by chemistry, biology and physics, delving into subjects at the cellular level," she said.
Grace is also a competitive dancer, starting when she was 4 years old, cherishing the friendships and team spirit in her dance community as a way to connect and unwind from her schoolwork. She currently attends Questar III's New Visions Program, where she is studying STEM (Science Technology Engineering and Math). She takes college-level physics at RPI, alongside university students twice a week.
One of the standout experiences for Grace at Ichabod Crane was the annual eighth-grade trip to Washington, DC. “What a trip! It was so memorable and I just loved visiting the museums and landmarks.”
In addition to her academics and extracurricular activities, Grace volunteers monthly at the Kinderhook Elks Lodge, helping out during their Sunday meals.
“I have been doing this since sophomore year, so the Elks members and volunteers are always so excited to hear about my accomplishments, especially when I was named salutatorian,” she said.
Grace is proud of being named salutatorian, but shared that it wasn’t something that she was striving for. “I knew I was intelligent enough to get good grades and I have always been self motivated. My parents never put pressure on me and have always been very supportive. I am proud of myself, but I don’t think the number defines me. I will walk out of Ichabod with all the skills I have learned and that’s what’s most important to me.”
Celebrating the Arts at ICC
At Ichabod Crane, the Arts play a pivotal role, nurturing students' creativity while instilling vital collaboration and critical thinking skills essential for the modern world.
“Investing in the Arts is an incredibly important part of our instructional program at Ichabod Crane. It is about nurturing well-rounded students who are equipped with the skills and perspectives they need to navigate this ever-changing world, and the ability to find and create joy through music and visual arts appreciation,” Superintendent Marie Digirolamo said.
Recently, our student artists have taken center stage. They've ventured down rustic dirt roads, freezing moments in time through their lenses in photography class. Their artworks have graced several exhibitions and our musicians showcased their talents at various venues.
Here are the some of the highlights:
High School students Alexa Meza and Sophia Karic were chosen to participate in the 25th Annual High School Regional Juried Exhibition after a rigorous selection process. This esteemed showcase, the largest to which Ichabod Crane submits artwork, features 103 works selected by a panel of local artists and educators from nearly 600 submissions. The exhibition is on display until April 13 at the Opalka Gallery at Russell Sage College.
High School students Lucia Impomeni and Sarah Balon were selected to exhibit their artwork in Columbia-Greene Community College’s Juried High School Arts Students Show. Lucia's photograph, "Break Through," earned Third Place, while Sarah received an honorable mention for her untitled digital artwork.
A selection of our photography students' work will be showcased in the upcoming exhibition, Dirt Road Life. During a field trip in February, our Advanced Photography class explored a network of dirt roads in Chatham to capture their photos. Presented by the Columbia County Historical Society in partnership with the Chatham Dirt Road Coalition, the exhibit will open on April 27 at the Vanderpoel House in Kinderhook. Several of our students had their artwork on display at the 15th Annual K-8 Empire State Plaza Art Collection Exhibit, which ran from March 4-22. This year’s exhibition included more than 1,100 artworks from 16 Capital Region school districts.
Our 7th and 8th Grade Band and Chorus performed at the Empire State Plaza in March, along with dozens of other student ensembles from across the region. Our students also had the amazing opportunity to take a tour of the Capitol with NYS Assemblyman Scott Bendett.
Rider student musicians participated at the All County Music Festival at Taconic Hills CSD in the Elementary Band, Junior High Chorus and Senior High School Band ensembles in March.
The Crane Acting Troupe presented its spring production of “42nd Street,” which featured our student performers, as well as CAT alumni, on March 21, 22 and 23.
Middle Schooler Pedro Lopez performed in the New York State Band Directors Association's State-Wide Middle School Honor Band.
2024 Wall of Fame Inductees
Four distinguished former faculty and community members of Ichabod Crane were recently inducted into the district's Wall of Fame. They join a roster of individuals who embody Rider Pride and have made significant contributions to the district, serving as role models for our students, staff and community members.
“Our committee thoroughly considered each nominee's impressive application and collectively chose to induct four outstanding individuals into this esteemed recognition program. I cannot wait to celebrate their achievements with the entire Rider community in April." Superintendent Marie Digirolamo said.
The 2024 Wall of Fame inductees are:
Geraldine (Jerri) Garafalo - distinguished faculty/staff
Lee Norton - distinguished community member
Brian Simmons - distinguished faculty/staff
E. Gordon Van Buren - distinguished faculty/staff
Mrs. Garafalo, also known as “Mrs. G” and “Mrs. Ichabod Crane,” graduated from Ichabod Crane in 1966 and began working at her alma mater in 1971. For the majority of her tenure, she taught sixth-grade social studies. Her former colleagues described her as a teacher who always put her students and the school first.
For four decades, Mr. Norton has played a pivotal role in the Northern Columbia Little League. He has served in various capacities, including president, division coordinator, trustee, coach and field maintenance coordinator. During the spring, you’ll often find him caring for the ball fields at Rothermel Park, Callan Park and Volunteer Park.
Mr. Simmons, who joined ICCSD in 1981 as a 6-8 technology teacher, demonstrated leadership both in and out of the classroom. He played a pivotal role in molding numerous Rider students into leaders. After retiring, he returned as a bus driver, transforming his route into a moving classroom to teach students leadership skills.
Mr. Van Buren, fondly known as Gordie, was a stalwart member of the Ichabod Crane CSD staff for 34 years. He served the district in the roles of teacher, athletic director, coach, assistant principal and mentor. He was a caring, humble person, with a looming legacy. His name was synonymous with Ichabod Crane and everyone knew him.
The Wall of Fame Committee is made up of three Board of Education members, three teachers, two administrators, three support staff members, three students and two parents/community members. Nominees must receive 70 percent of the committee vote to be selected.
The new inductees will be honored at a ceremony on April 24, 6:30 p.m., at the High School. Alumni members of the Wall of Fame will also be invited to celebrate the occasion.
ICC Competes at OM Regionals
Two Ichabod Crane teams recently participated in the 2024 Regional Odyssey of the Mind (OM) tournament at Coxsackie-Athens CSD, competing against peers from numerous regional school districts.
OM, an international educational program, provides creative problem-solving opportunities for students of all ages. The program tasks teams with solving diverse problems without any adult assistance. Then our student teams test their solutions at local, state and global competitions.
The two Ichabod Crane teams spent months leading up to the March 24 competition planning and preparing their skit-based presentations.
The third graders completed Problem 1, titled "A Night at the Movies.” Their skit involved a car propelled by an outside force, a showing of the Taylor Swift Eras Tour movie and many special effects, including a fog machine.
“The brilliant team of third graders started working on this problem in November and their hard work paid off with a wonderful performance,” said Elizabeth Phillips, coach of both teams.
The fifth-grade team completed Problem 3, titled "Classics ... Opening Night Antics,” creating a skit depicting the opening night of a play based on Wind in the Willows. Their performance incorporated a set malfunction, unexpected sound effects and a theater critic.
“The fifth-grade team is a beacon of creativity,” Mrs. Phillips said. “All in all, our two teams had a very successful weekend. Their creativity and enthusiasm made them excellent ambassadors of ICC and everyone had a blast!”
Both teams also competed in a spontaneous portion of the contest. They were given a verbal problem they had never heard before and had four minutes to respond verbally. This problem must be kept a secret from everyone other than the team until after the summer World Odyssey Competition.
The fifth-grade team scored high enough to move on to the Odyssey of the Mind State Tournament in Syracuse on the weekend of April 13. Stay tuned for more news!
