WALKING WEDNESDAY
THIS IS THE LAST WALKING WEDNESDAY IN OCTOBER
November has only one Walking Wednesday on November 1st. Come join us if you can. It is a great social experience and it will give you a healthy start to the day. Most of us don't get enough daily exercise. These walks to school can help us feel good. Plus, we are helping to reduce our impact on global warming.
PICTURES & NEWS
VOYAGERS 4TH GRADE LEARNING ABOUT NATIONAL PARKS AND MORE
Ms. Sato and Ms. Teenyanoff are piggy-backing a lot of learning onto the annual fat bear competition that takes place in Alaska park system each year. The grizzly (brown) bears in Alaska fatten up on salmon before heading into hibernation over the winter. In order for them to survive, the bears need to consume vast amounts of fish and berries. The transformation from their lean figures to the ones that they reach before hibernation is fascinating. There are online video cameras that show the bears catching salmon, and each viewer can vote for the bear they think appears to have changed the most over the summer season prior to hibernation.
In the pictures that were taken in Ms. Sato's classroom on Thursday afternoon, October 19th, the students were creating posters to persuade viewers that the bears each student chose deserved to be the winner of the fat bear contest. Link to 21 Pictures.
BIKING (AND WALKING) FRIDAY
A modest group of hardy bikers and a few walkers met at Houghton Park on Friday morning, October 20th. They formed a train and headed carefully to school. The walkers followed more slowly and were supervised by two adults.
The purpose of these biking Fridays, and there is one more this coming Friday, is to get us thinking about alternatives to riding to school in our family vehicles. The climate committee hope that the number of students that walk and bike to school will increase over time. We are lucky to be one of the few towns in Vermont that have sidewalks in most places and that have most of our students living within a mile of school. Alternatively, if walking and biking are not appealing, know that busing to school is a less energy intensive transport method than traveling to school in smaller vehicles.

EXPLORERS 3RD GRADE & TRIUMPH 4TH GRADE P.E.
There was a lot of running around and great excitement as the two classroom units formed into two melded teams for a vigorous game of dodgeball. Ms. Jarvis and Mr. Fleming did an excellent job of supervising the activity.

BIKING FRIDAYS IN OCTOBER (FROM HOUGHTON PARK TO SCHOOL)
“It’s not about what it is, it’s about what it can become.”
— The Lorax
Greetings from the Climate Committee! We are announcing Biking Fridays from Houghton Park during the month of October! If you don’t have a bike, walking is an option although bikers and walkers will not be kept together while getting to school.
Meet up at Houghton Park earliest at 6:50 and leaving at 7:00.
We are doing this because if you walk, bike, or carpool to school, it lessens air pollution and hopefully our actions will slow global warming.
Thank you for reading, biking and walking!
