HOMECOMING SEASON BEGINS....
This week, Abbeville High School kicks off the homecoming season as the Wildcats and their feeder systems celebrate Homecoming 2023. They will be followed up with homecoming activities at Erath High and North Vermilion next week. Gueydan will be celebrating on October 13th and Kaplan will round out this years homecoming activities with an October 20th date.
Homecoming is a time where we celebrate the great traditions of our schools and our past. We celebrate the community spirit of the past and present and we honor great Vermilion Parish alumni.
While we all get so excited around these events, I do want to remind all these are school sponsored events and we need to keep these things in mind as we celebrate. Please remind your children that vandalizing of any property in an effort to "toilet paper" is not acceptable and becomes a law enforcement issue and not a school issue. Please be reminded that on parade routes, the safety and well being of our float riders and our spectators is of the utmost importance. Appropriate behavior and music on these parade routes is a must. Please do your part to make sure that we have family friendly events for all to enjoy.
Homecoming football games and dances will bring these weeks to a conclusion and it is essential that we remember what is acceptable and not acceptable at school sponsored events. Your help in all these are appreciated. Please be reminded that a dress code for school dances can be found in the handbook as the school board has adopted policy on this many years ago.
Please check out your schools communication sites and attend as many events as you can, but please make sure that you read the school and community specific policies that are also in place.
We all want to have a great time and experience in whatever homecoming you are supporting, so let's make it a priority to do things the right way and not put a damper on any of our planned events.
Happy Homecoming season.
Your Partner in Education,
Superintendent Tommy Byler

Information and Resources from the VPSS Curriculum Team..
In 2022, the Louisiana Department of Education revised social studies standards for Kindergarten - High School. The new standards are being implemented this school year (23-24). The NEW Louisiana Student Standards for Social Studies were written with the goal of producing individuals who have (1) broad and deep knowledge of U.S. and world history, (2) a firm grasp and appreciation of the civic principles that underlie our system of government, (3) a solid understanding of fundamental economic principles and the ability to make wise financial decisions, and (4) proficiency in both physical and human geography. To achieve these goals students should build content knowledge through engagement with authentic primary and secondary sources and express well-reasoned arguments about social studies topics.
During the 23-24 school year teachers and students will be exploring the new standards. Students from Third grade through High School Civics will take a LEAP Social Studies Field Test in April of 2024. The scope of the standards are represented below.

DID YOU KNOW?
Louisiana House Bill 88, Act 370 requires that each September, in conjunction with Constitution Day and Constitution Week, each public school shall observe Celebrate Freedom Week. As part of this observance, public schools shall ensure that all students receive grade-appropriate instruction, in social studies or other appropriate courses, on topics related to freedom. Such topics may include but are not limited to instruction related to the nation's founding and the intent, meaning, and importance of the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution, including the Bill of Rights. Together, let’s encourage our children to be informed, engaged, and active participants in our democracy.
