Magyar's Message May 10, 2024
-From The Desk of the Superintendent-
Dear ALCS Families,
We had a wonderful week in our district celebrating our team for Staff Appreciation Week. We kicked off the week stopping at the bus garage for breakfast, then enjoyed lunch on Wednesday for the entire district, as well as enjoying celebrations within each building. Thank you to everyone for making this week so special. THANK YOU again to our amazing employees! We appreciate everything that you do!
There is exciting news from spring sports at Learwood. Congratulations to the softball and girls track teams for winning their respective Southwestern Conference Championships. Best of luck and congratulations also to the following State meet qualifiers from Learwood: Rileigh Scarvelli (shot and discus), Anna Liller (1600), Julia Scarvelli (shot and discus), Kaitlyn Warner (400), James Garrison (4x4), Ben Mars ( 4x4 and 400), Michael Kemer ( 4x4 and long jump), and Holden Pilkington (4x4).
Good luck to our high school sports team competing in tournament action. It’s been a fun spring season. Thank you to our senior athletes for your leadership.
Congratulations to our students who competed today at the annual Lorain County Special Olympics at Ely Stadium in Elyria. It’s thrilling to watch the sportsmanship and pure joy from the athletes and coaches as they not only compete, but cheer on each other.
This week we also held several Strategic Visioning Focus Groups among our stakeholders including staff, students, community members, and the Board of Education. This process has been very enlightening and has offered different perspectives as we work toward outlining our goals for the District and building our Portrait of an Avon Lake Graduate. The work continues and we plan to have our Strategic Plan rolled out in the Fall.
Thank you to everyone who came out for our Community Forum at Learwood this week. Representatives from ThenDesign Architecture provided an overview of the new building plan. Through their fresh set of eyes, we were able to scale the total square footage of the building project down from 385,057, to 333,210 for a total reduction of 51,847. The estimated cost for the project decreased from $170 million, to $155.7 million. The audio and slide presentation are available on our district website, click here.
Now that we have shared our updated plan, we want to make sure we give every opportunity for feedback and questions. Our district leadership team will be hosting a series of Coffee Talks this summer and in the fall. We will share specific dates in the coming weeks.
Happy Mother’s Day to all of the special women who guide and support our amazing students.
We thank you for your continued support of our schools.
Sincerely,
Joelle Magyar

ALHS advances to Academic Challenge finals
During this week’s semifinal broadcast of the Scholastic Games radio quiz show on WEOL (AM930 and FM 100.3), Avon Lake High School defeated Vermilion to advance to the program’s 34th County Championship. Avon Lake will face the winner of next week’s semifinal between Elyria High School and Amherst Steele.
Team members include Madeline Waggoner, Alex Chmiel, and team captain Dylan Missal, who won the program’s “Standout Scholar Award.” The “Standout Scholar” is the student who contributed the most to his or her team as determined by scorekeepers. It includes a $50 prize each time it is awarded. It was Dylan’s second award this year, which he also won once in 2023, placing him on the program’s all-time “Honor Roll.” Alex also won the award in the team’s first competition this year.
The championship will air May 20 from 5 to 6 p.m. on the radio station (it will repeat at 10:05 a.m. May 25). Congratulations and good luck.
Scholastic Games began in the fall of 1990 with the support of Nordson Corporation and has continued on radio station WEOL during every school year since. The format, originally developed for a Cleveland program in the 1980s, has changed little in the run of the show, though the questions are continually updated with increased emphasis on STEM subjects in recent years. Scholastic Games is the longest continuously running program of its type in the region, and its focus on greater Lorain County has provided maximum opportunities for local students to compete.
Avon Lake has won the annual championship three times in the history of the program (2001, 2005, 2020).
