Principal's Update
Principal's Updates - October 18, 2024
A few words from Mrs. Martin...
It was a pleasure to see everyone at the conferences! I hope you found the discussions about your child's progress enlightening.
We have some exciting activities lined up:
- Mass Update: Next week, we will celebrate Mass on Monday instead of our usual Wednesday, with Bishop Kopacz as the celebrant. All families are warmly invited to join us at 8:30am.
- Honor Roll: Next Tuesday, we will have our honor roll ceremony. Grades 3-5 will be celebrated at 8:00 in the gym and grades 6-8 wil be celebrated at 9:30 in the gym.
- Denim Day: Next Friday, we’ll have our monthly denim day to support Olive Branch Social Service Offices.
- Halloween Celebration: Halloween is just around the corner! This year, we'll hold a trick-or-treat event during school hours instead of a party. On October 31, students may wear jeans and a Halloween shirt. We kindly ask each family to donate a bag of 300 pieces of candy by October 28. Please ensure that students have a candy sack that can be stapled shut, as they will take the candy home for parental approval. You will receive one service hour.
- Thanksgiving Food Drive: We will be collecting food for the Sacred Heart Southern Mission during Red Ribbon Week Oct. 23 - 31. Additional details can be found below.
Thank you for your continued support and involvement in our school community!
Enjoy the weekend!

Getting to Know Our School Community
This week, we’re highlighting our student-parent conferences. A common question from parents is why students take the lead in these discussions rather than teachers.
We believe it’s crucial for students to articulate their achievements, the strategies they used to reach those goals, and areas where they can improve. This process encourages self-reflection and empowers them to analyze their own progress by examining their data to identify strengths and weaknesses. By leading the conference, students take ownership of their learning, which fosters independence and motivation.
Additionally, our teachers held a number of individual parent-teacher conferences during the first nine weeks of school. These meetings are typically scheduled when a parent, student, or teacher has a specific concern or question. Our staff is always available to arrange meetings if any concerns arise. However, we prefer that students attend conferences addressing academic concerns, as it truly takes a group effort to make informed changes during these discussions.
Thank you for supporting this important initiative to foster independence and motivation!
Thanksgiving Food Drive
It’s time for our annual food drive! Our donations will help Sacred Heart Southern Missions provide food baskets to families in need. So far this year they have received requests for 1,825 baskets. Our middle school students and some parents have already volunteered their time to help organize and pack the boxes.
Each year, we ask our students to make a donation, and I encourage families to review the list together and shop for the items to be donated. During this time, we will discuss gratitude for what we have and the importance of helping others in their time of need.
Below is the list of items needed for the baskets. We will collect these items during Red Ribbon Week, from October 23 to 31. You may donate one item or more if you are able.
If you know someone in need this Thanksgiving or Christmas season, please have them contact the social service office in their area for assistance. It is confidential. Please see the attached flyer for more details.

Booth set-up could begin as early as 3:00. You do not need protection of children. If you would like to volunteer please email Bridget Martin at bmartin@shsm.org

Red Ribbon Week is a special time in October when schools and communities come together to encourage everyone to live healthy, drug-free lives. It started to honor a hero named Kiki Camarena, who worked hard to keep people safe from drugs. During this week, kids wear red ribbons and take part in fun activities like dress-up days and games, all to remind each other to make good choices and stay drug-free!
