Count Day Activities
The Amazing Shake at Levey Middle School
Incredible moments at Levey Middle School during the Amazing Shake on Feb. 7th & 8th! The gym was transformed into a maze of challenges for students to test their soft skills (introductions, handshakes, eye contact, conversation) along with their ability to carry out a task at the same time. Scholars rotated through the stations, and each station lasted 2 minutes. Tasks were a secret that students only found out about when they arrived at the station, and then they had one minute to perform the task. Judges had 30 seconds to score each scholar based on how they performed the task.
Thank you to our special guest judges, who were members of community organizations, teachers, SPS administrators, and board of education members. What a wonderful program to bring to our scholars!
Thompson's Spelling Bee
Congratulations to 7th grader Aiden for winning Thompson’s annual school spelling bee on Wednesday, January 31st.
Aiden beat 25 other spellers in 14 rounds to claim the victory. He will now go on to represent Thompson at the Oakland Regional Spelling Bee on March 2nd at Oakland University, where he will compete for a chance to travel to Washington DC to participate in the Scripps National Spelling Bee. Congratulations also go to runner-up Joshua, who placed second and spelled correctly for 13 rounds. Both spellers did a great job.
MacArthur's HBCU Projects
5th graders at MacArthur K-8 University Academy, researched an African American and they became that person. They dressed as the person and spoke in first person as they presented on their accomplishments.
Women of Tomorrow at A&T
On Feb. 1st, the Women of Tomorrow at Southfield A&T hosted a meeting with Elizabeth Crenshaw, Director of District and Constituent Services for State Senator Jeremy Moss. In addition to the monthly mentor meeting with volunteers from the community, scholars were able to hear Ms. Crenshaw speak about how she assists constituents of the 7th State District access programs and other support systems. The young women also gained valuable insight into budgeting, finance, and taxes through an activity led by mentors Dana and Lynn.
Stevenson's Community School Coalition Site Visit
Stevenson Elementary School, a United Way for Southeastern Michigan Community School, hosted a coalition site visit, which included an overview of the purpose of the community school concept, tours of the facility, and panel discussions. The event demonstrated the importance of various community partners coming together to help ensure the well-being of children and the improvement of their learning environment and their community as a whole.
Guests included educators, parents, health and human service professionals and orgs, community volunteers, and civic leaders. Michigan government officials in attendance included Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist, Senator Stephanie Chang, Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib, and State Representative Kimberly Edwards.

District Calendar Update
February 27, 2024, will be a district-wide professional development day. As a result, there will be no school for students on that day. However, staff members are required to report for professional development activities.
It's important to note that this professional development day will replace the originally scheduled PD day on April 17, 2024. Therefore, students and staff are now expected to report to school on April 17, 2024.
This adjustment in the calendar is necessary due to the state moving the primary election date from August to February and the number of polling sites located in our district.
We understand that changes to the calendar can impact schedules and plans, and we appreciate your flexibility and understanding as we navigate these adjustments. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns regarding this change.
