USD116 BOE Update: March 4, 2025

• The Board approved the hires of a Principal for King School, UMS Associate Principal and UHS Assistant Principal.
• The Board discussed facility needs, including a ten-year safety survey identifying urgent, required, and recommended repairs, and a long-term facility project list encompassing maintenance, upgrades, and possible future developments.
• The Board approved the 2025-2026 school year calendar.

The Urbana Board of Education approved the appointments of Lidiya Wang as principal of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary, Derek Ely as associate principal of Urbana Middle School and Sean Smith as assistant principal at Urbana High School.

The District is required to submit a ten year safety survey report every ten years. This report is divided into three categories: urgent, required and recommended and includes all District facilities.

Long-term facility projects were also discussed, with some projects highlighted for future consideration into the District’s next Master Facilities Plan. Some of the new items on the list include:

• Resurface and line the track
• New bleachers for UHS & UMS
• New facilities shop
• Vocational Education/ Industrial Tech trade addition
• Young Adult House (used for life skills)

Long Term Project List

The Board approved the 2025-26 school calendar.

• October 2, 2025 is a Fall Holiday
• December 22, 2025 is now an Institute Day/Semester Planning for staff (no school for students)
• Winter break begins December 23, 2025

• Sixth Grade Family Orientation: Thursday, March 6 at 6 p.m. at UMS
