Hello Ridgeline Families- Today we bid farewell to the 1st semester and most of the month of January. We look forward to renewing our energy and focus on new semester next week. Your student’s schedule is already available in Powerschool if you’re not sure which courses may be changing.

This week brought some great opportunities for learning, fun, and celebrations. One highlight from this week that I don’t normally talk about was our Thursday staff meeting. This may or may not come as a surprise, but in a high school our size by enrollment and square feet, compounded by a teacher’s schedule leaving little to no discretionary time—we have staff members that may not have seen each other face-to-face since August! So, Thursday we all gathered in the library and spent some time renewing our adult connections and reflected on our students growth and our personal growth the first half of the year. That time, even once/month is extremely important to me as it is my one opportunity to be in person to talk about who we are, who we want to be, our mission, challenges, and next steps. We value the late start day.

Amongst all the great things happening around Ridgeline this week I thought it was fantastic that the fire dept. along with our health/fitness teachers taught students basic CPR and how to use an AED. This life-saving training could be very important for here at school or out in the home or community.

Senior night events are always special and it gives us a chance to thank and say goodbye to seniors as their time in high school sports comes closer to an end. Tonight we will celebrate boys basketball seniors and cheer seniors! To add to the party atmosphere we have 100 1st-5th grade girls performing with our cheer squad tonight at halftime of the girls 5:30 game. It’s always a treat to see their smiles and pure joy to be in front of the crowd with their very own pom-poms!

We get the honor tomorrow of hosting the regional Solo and Ensemble contest here at Ridgeline. Hundreds of band, orchestra, and percussion musicians will be filling our building with a variety of outstanding pieces. Speaking of…we were treated in the office to a performance of our own this week. Josiah K, Gracie N, Grace S, Jacob P, and Blaine M made a surprise appearance with their saxophone quintet! Good luck to our musicians tomorrow!

Congratulations, Christopher Mahn: National Merit Commended Scholar!

Each year, 1.5 million high school students take the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). Of that 1.5 million, approximately 50,000 earn scores high enough to achieve national recognition. Approximately 34,000 qualify as Commended Scholars, 16,000 as Semifinalists, and 15,000 (of the 16,000), advance to Finalist status, with 7250 winning National Merit Scholarship awards. The process is exceptionally competitive, and recognition on any of these levels is prestigious. Ridgeline High School and its entire campus community wish to congratulate Senior Christopher Mahn on being named Ridgeline High School’s first ever National Merit Commended Scholar!

Spring College Fairs

With the current seniors now deeply immersed in the college admission season, it’s now time to turn our attention to the underclassmen! Each year, the National Association for College Admission Counseling hosts in-person and virtual college fairs across the US. While there are no in-person, NACAC-sponsored fairs in Spokane this spring, there are virtual fairs in which interested juniors, sophomores, and freshmen can get a head-start on their college exploration processes. To register, have your student access this link, navigate to the “Virtual” tab in the middle of the page, and complete the registration for the virtual fair s/he wishes to attend. If you and your senior are looking for another opportunity for help with the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), the Spokane chapter of Executive Women International will co-sponsor two events with the College Success Foundation over the next six weeks. Running Start/Dual Credit Night: Save the Date!

For current sophomores and juniors who wish to participate in Running Start for the 2023-24 academic year, the application window for the programs at Spokane Falls Community College, Spokane Community College, and Eastern Washington University will soon open. If you and/or your student would like more information about both these programs and the additional dual credit options available through Advanced Placement, please plan to attend the virtual informational meeting on the evening of Thursday, February 2, at 6:30 PM. We will have a Skill Center open house on Feb. 9th from 5:30-7:00pm. Unified Basketball game is tonight, Friday, January 27th at Mt. Spokane High School. Come show your Falcon support!

TONIGHT will be the Boys Basketball team and the Cheer team Senior Night versus the Mead Panthers. We encourage our students, families, and community to come support our seniors and their teams. Both the boys and girls teams will be playing (Boys Freshman 4:00, Girls Varsity/Boys JV 5:30, Boys Varsity/Girls JV 7:00).

Congratulations to the girls basketball team for their 42-38 victory over Cheney this week. The Falcons were led in scoring by Morgan Espinosa-Kelly’s 13 points. She was joined by the 9 points apiece of Trinity Frazier and Madi Crowley. Habiba Adam was a monster on the boards for the Falcons with her 13 rebounds. The Falcons host Mead this Friday and really could use the support of our community. Last night’s win was number 10 for the Falcons. Again, congratulations and best of luck tonight!

Tyson Ramsey placed 1st out of 21 wrestlers at 145 pounds at the Clearwater Classic in Lewiston, Idaho. Tyson is the first varsity wrestling tournament champion in Ridgeline history. He currently leads the team with 21 wins on the season

Bella Delarosa placed first on vault, floor, and beam. She placed second on bars and won the All Around with 35.175 points. On beam, Julianne Stevenson placed third, Elliot Edminster placed fifth, and KJ Haneke placed 10th. Our amazing Falcons placed second, missing first place by 1.1 points.

The Falcons Robotics “Green Team” did extremely well and was chosen to be in the semi-finals and their alliance won the entire competition event, Which allowed them to go to state.

The greater accomplishment was that the team won the Inspire award. This award is very prestigious and highlights them as the best overall team. This is an extremely high honor in the FTC world. Only 5 are given in Washington state.

The team is traveling to compete in the State Tournament Jan 28th at the Amazon Doppler Building.

A big thanks to the medical professionals from LabCorp who came to teach Mrs. Nielsen’s Principles of Biomed students the skills of phlebotomy!

Speech & Debate gets more finalists at Southside Invitational

More team members broke into the final rounds at the Southside Invitational speech and debate tournament held at Ferris on Jan. 20-21.

Seniors Isabella Kelp and Cambrea Lombardo competed in Congressional Debate and made it to the final round. Kelp placed eighth.

Competing in speech events were Brock Lyons (10), Alyssa McSwain (9), Alaina Mitrovich (10), Nicholas Rahm (11), Emily Rountree (9), Dominic Smith (10) and Jacob Wharton (12). Lyons, Rountree and Smith each made it to the final rounds, a first for each.

The team will enter the "Super Bowl" of all Northwest tournaments, the Thomas S. Foley Memorial Forensics Tournament at University High School on Feb. 2-4. The three-day event has four levels of debate competition and nearly 20 speech categories.

State qualifying competition begins mid-February.

This weeks Dancer who gets to take home Swoop is Savanah! She received this team award for being a member who always puts her teammates first. In our upcoming performance she was willing to switch all of her choreography so that no teammates needed to make any adjustments! She is always doing everything with her teammates in mind! We love you and are so thankful to have a teammate like you Savannah!

Milena Dirtu has been working hard for months on this incredible piece of artwork for our very own custodian, Jerry Duncan! This beautiful piece means a great deal to Jerry, and it will truly be cherished. It was awesome to see one of our students spending hours upon hours to create something so special for one of our staff members!

Any student interested in playing Baseball this Spring, there will be an informational meeting Tuesday, January 31st at 7:15 and 2:20 in Coach Maupin’s room, B115.

This week I (Senator, Mike Padden) had the privilege of sponsoring two Senate pages from the Spokane Valley: Abby Lind (left) is a freshman at Ridgeline High School. Abby lives in Greenacres, plays the violin, competes in tennis and softball, and is involved in the school orchestra. Hailey Huff (right) is a freshman at University High School. Hailey lives in Mead and is involved in Future Business Leaders of America, Key Club, tennis and youth group. It was nice to meet Abby and Hailey this week!

Senior Avery Koesel is Ridgeline's first ever Spokane Lilac Festival Royal Candidate! Avery is partaking in trainings such as military, communication, resume & interview skills, leadership, and more. Next month, she will interview for a spot on the 2023 SLFA Onward Royal Court. Good luck, Avery

Introduction to Business and Marketing students finished the semester researching and developing a food truck concept for the Liberty Lake area. Students had to research, survey and analyze data to determine the best possible choice for menu items, pricing, location, strategic partnerships, colors and theme. Students presented their concept with a model of their truck and created and shared a menu item with fellow classmates.

It’s Spring Musical time! Auditions for Wizards of OZ coming up and sign up sheets on theatre doors and packets available in the office! Auditions will be Feb 6th & 7th

Senior Tribute Ads for Yearbook: Deadline extended to Feb. 6

We have limited spaces remaining for purchasing a senior tribute ad.

Have extra-curricular photos, family, special pictures or additional portraits of your senior you'd like to share? Use the attached link to purchase a senior tribute ad for our yearbook, Eyrié, Volume 2.

Tributes vary in size and price. Parents and guardians get to choose the layout, photos and write a special message.

Please be advised that yearbook staff members will not edit spelling or crop pictures, and the administration does reserve the right to refuse tributes due to inappropriateness.

The class of 2024 is hosting our Winter Formal Dance on Saturday, February 11th from 7-10pm in the commons.

Theme for the dance is Masquerade Ball.

The Galentine Event, 2/4/23 is held in the tasting room at Trailbreaker Cider in Liberty Lake and therefore ticket sales are limited. The theme is Wear Red for Ridgeline, but the dress code can be as fancy or as simple as your comfort level. Tickets cost $50 per person and gives you access to the auction, dessert bites, mingling and Valentine themed selfie wall, as well as a drink ticket for any beverage. The whole intent of fundraising for RHS Grad Night 2023 is to ensure that costs are covered for a fun and safe event for every member of the graduating class who would like to attend.
