🎨 Prosper ISD Earns 5th Year TAEA District of Distinction
Prosper ISD has been named a 2024 District of Distinction by the Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) for the 5th year consecutive year. This year, over 1,200 districts were eligible to apply for this Texas Art Education Association (TAEA) Visual Arts Award, and Prosper ISD was only one of 94 districts that received this outstanding honor.
The district was awarded this honor based on PISD's visual art program from participation in TAEA through membership, exhibitions, contests, and community engagement in the visual arts through field experiences, community service, and collaboration with other content areas.
🏆 PISD Makes History at TMEA
Rushing MS Symphony - 6th in State
Rock Hill HS Wind Symphony Advances to State; Prosper HS Wind Ensemble Advances to Area
On June 20th recordings from Rock Hill HS Wind Symphony and Prosper HS Wind Ensemble competed in the Area B State Honor Band contest. Both schools were among the 14 total bands that advanced to Area B (one of 8 Areas). Rock Hill Wind Symphony placed third overall in the Area contest and advanced to the State Semifinals. This is the first time a band from Prosper ISD has advanced to the State round of the TMEA Honor Band Contest.
State Honor Band semifinals were held last week in San Antonio. The top 22 6A Bands in the state were split evenly into two rooms of 11 with only 5 in each room advancing to finals. After 8 hours of grueling judging the results were posted and the Rock Hill Wind Symphony placed 6th in their room. Although they didn’t advance to finals, their performance placed among the top 11 or 12 in the state (out of 249 6A schools). That’s an AMAZING accomplishment for the program. Great job to all the students for their hard work! If you have a few minutes, click here to listen to the recordings.
Congratulations to both Rock Hill and Prosper bands for their outstanding performances!
🎤 Band & Orchestra Directors Featured at TBA & TODA
Several PISD Band and Orchestra Directors were invited to speak at this year's Texas Bandmasters Association convention and Texas Orchestra Directors Association convention, providing invaluable insight into varying topics to help grow and strengthen their programs.
Reagan Brumley
WGHS Band Director
Texas Bandmasters Association (TBA) is the largest association of band directors in the world. In addition to hosting the annual convention which serves over 4,000 people, the association also provides professional development opportunities throughout the year to band directors of all academic levels all around Texas. TBA recently held its annual convention in San Antonio and we are proud to announce Reagan Brumley, WGHS Band Director, as the 2024-25 President of TBA. Congratulations!
Jarred Dodd
Rushing Middle School Band Director
The TBA board invited the 77th Midwest Clinic's performing band directors to host a panel discussion on what they have done to establish their band programs. Through comparison and analysis of each program, the directors presented the details of what it takes to establish culture, curriculum, student expectation, as well as the ins and outs of what it takes to lead a successful band program.
Josh Ferman (pictured left)
Rogers Middle School Band Director
"I had a lot of fun presenting a beginning saxophone clinic at the Texas Bandmasters Association convention. I collaborated with another band director from Brownsville ISD in south Texas to bring concepts, curriculum and pedagogy perspectives from opposite sides of the state. We live and work in a place where there are so many resources and great programs that we often forget how truly fortunate we are. I think it's important to help others in our profession around the state by giving presentations and clinics at our conferences."
Nicki Neugent (pictured left)
Hays Middle School Asst. Band Director
"I was honored to represent Prosper ISD and present two clinics at TBA this July. The first clinic was entitled “Hot Takes on Flute Non-Negotiables”. In this clinic our hope was to give an outline of what we feel is extremely important for all beginner flute players to know by the end of their first year of playing. While there are several aspects of flute teaching that can utilize different methods to achieve similar outcomes, there are some vital flute-specific things that must be taught a very specific way. Our goals were to highlight those differences in a fun and meaningful way.
For my second clinic, I was asked to be on a panel entitled Beginner Timelines. I joined with three directors from around the state discussing a variety of beginner class timelines from August to May. I explained what my year would look like from day one to the end of the year and shared class goals across each month of instruction. All three of us showed different ways to achieve similar outcomes with a variety of class set-ups and student backgrounds."
Dawn Oyedipe
Hays Middle School Orchestra Director
Dawn Oyedipe offered invaluable insights at the Texas Orchestra Directors Association convention as a mother of a student athlete with ADHD and Educator Member of the CHADD organization (Children and Adults with ADHD). Her session dispelled common myths about ADHD, pointed to reputable sources for training and education, and discussed strategies for supporting executive function in our students.
🥁 PHS Drumline Sets Tempo for 2024-2025
💃 Grooving at Summer Dance Camp: Taylor Swift Eras Style
🎺 What is Summer Band Camp Like?
Middle school students worked hard and played hard with their friends, old and new, at summer band camp. The student counselors compiled pictures, videos, and interviews of students and paired it all with the tracks of the pieces they performed. Enjoy!
🔅 Summer 2024 with Drum Corps International
Every year high school students audition to spend their summer playing and traveling with Drum Corps International. It's long days, long bus rides, and physically exhausting practices and performances, but the friendships, personal growth, and unique experiences outweigh it all. Here is just a small glimpse of a couple Prosper students' experiences with their specific corps groups.
Chase Ingram - Walnut Grove HS - Senior
Trombone/Euphonium / Marching with the Madison Scouts
Michael Dy - Rock Hill HS Alumni Class of 2021 - Current Percussion Staff
Percussion / Marching with the Santa Clara Vanguard
In 2023, I marched in the front ensemble with the Troopers, and I am currently participating in the 2024 season with the Santa Clara Vanguard. Marching DCI has always been a dream of mine, especially with Vanguard. Throughout these seasons, I've continually learned more about myself each day, gaining valuable experience that I can apply to all aspects of my life.
Ella Bermudez - Rock Hill HS Alumni Class of 2023
Euphonium / Marching with the Seattle Cascades
"My time in the Seattle Cascades so far has already been incredible and every bit worth the
struggles that come with the activity. Nothing matches being able to perform three shows in
three nights, rewriting a whole movement in a day, or enduring seven-hour bus rides at night.
Getting better as a corps is all about making the last show's best parts the new standard going forward.
On another note, the friendships I’ve formed in just a short amount of time here have become
immensely important to me and will be ones I continue to cherish. I can’t wait to perform in
Indianapolis and leave everything I’ve worked for on the field for the last time at Championships.
I would say that joining the Rock Hill Winter Guard in my junior and senior years helped with the
dance element of performing, which is growing more important in the activity. The experience I
gained there has directly translated into the opening and closing dance features that set the
stage for our show.
In a nutshell, becoming a part of the Seattle Cascades has been an amazing journey. The
rehearsals, friendships, and all the struggles have all contributed to making my rookie summer
of Drum Corps so immensely memorable. I can’t wait to do this again already."
🎺 Students Perform at Chautauqua Music School Festival Orchestra
PISD grads Brandon Richardson (PHS grad; studying trumpet performance at SMU) and Elijah Leonard (RHHS grad; studying trumpet performance at the Cleveland Institute of Music) were selected to participate in this year's Chautauqua Music School Festival Orchestra (CHQ.org). In addition to working with the trumpet instructor at the institute, both have had the privilege of attending master classes with Tim Morrison, renowned trumpeter and Associate Principal Trumpet of the Boston Symphony Orchestra / Principal Trumpet of the Boston Pops. Their final concert will be with Wynton Marsalis and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra.
🎤 Rushing MS Represents at TCDA MS All-State Choir
Elizabeth Holt, an 8th grader at Rushing MS, represented Prosper ISD a few weeks ago as a member of the Texas Choral Directors Association (TCDA) All-State Middle School Honor Choir. She auditioned this past winter and just spent 3 days in San Antonio during the TCDA Annual Convention rehearsing with the choir and performing in their closing concert on the last day.
💜 Rushing Cheer is Ready!
Rushing Cheer is back to business! They completed our annual choreography camp with James Thomas from the Netflix show "Cheer." The new 6th graders were welcomed to campus along with the Royals and directors. We are so excited for another amazing year ahead!
🎤 2024 All-State Choir Preparations Begin
Sixteen Rock Hill Choir members attended the All-State Choir Camp at Texas A&M University Commerce in July. Each year students across the state attend camps at universities to begin learning a packet of music to be auditioned throughout the fall for selection to one of 33 TMEA region choirs. Through this competitive process, students are afforded the opportunity to progress to the Area audition (consisting of the top 20 students on each voice part) for selections to a Texas All-State Choir. Last year, over 15,000 students began the audition process for one of just over 600 available seats to participate at the annual TMEA clinic/convention located in San Antonio in February.
🎻 Suzuki Students Spread Joy in the Community
Suzuki students worked hard all summer! They participated in a weekly online practice challenge and took lessons and group classes. They also performed in our community at Tribute Senior Living and participated in a North Texas Suzuki event at UNT. We are so proud of their dedication and progress during the summer months!
🎼 Students Awarded in TI:ME Composition Festival
The results of the 2023-2024 TI:ME Composition Festival are in! Two talented students from PISD received Honorable Mention for their exceptional work in the Original Composition in a DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) category. Congratulations!
