Miller Elementary Weekly Update
Week of October 6th, 2024!
Hello Miller Families!
We had such a fun week celebrating Aurora's Homecoming Game all while having some amazing spirit days! From PJ day to crazy hair day, to hat day and mismatched day, we had a blast coming together as a school to show our school spirit!
We also are enjoying the beginning of FALL! We are using our senses to describe what we observe, listen, feel and even taste. Using descriptive words and phrases is an important part of developing language as well as learning specific concepts. You can practice describing what you see, hear, taste and smell around your house or when you are out in the community.
This upcoming week our kindergarteners will be traveling on their first field trip to Lake Farm Park. Please remember to pack a disposable lunch for your child on the day of their trip. This includes any necessary disposable silverware and napkins. It is important that your child dresses for the weather in comfortable clothes. As always, we will travel with all important medical documents and medications. Many school staff members will be going out to the farm along with the volunteers that were randomly selected per classroom. You will be receiving an important reminder about this trip in your child's take home folder. We have enjoyed this trip to the farm for many years, and we're excited to visit once again. Stay tuned for photos from your classroom teacher and on our next newsletter!
Finally, don't forget that we have a long weekend coming up due to staff professional development days! There will be NO SCHOOL Friday, October 11th or Monday, October 14th!
Have a great weekend!
Go GREENMEN!

School Custodian Appreciation Day
Meet Mr. Jimmy and Mr. Anthony
We are lucky here at Miller Elementary to have two amazing custodians, Mr. Jimmy and Mr. Anthony. You may hear a lot about Mr. Jimmy or Mr. Anthony because they are very important people in our school! They often are some of the first faces children see when they enter our building off our school buses. Both Mr. Jimmy and Mr. Anthony are supporting students and staff to ensure our building is safe, clean, and well maintained each day. We appreciate them so much and we enjoyed celebrating them this week for National School Custodian Day!
Trick or Treat Safety Meeting for Kindergarten
This upcoming Thursday, the Aurora Police Department will be coming to Miller to speak to our Kindergartners about Trick-or-Treat Safety! They will review the importance of staying with a known adult, stranger danger, and candy/treat safety. During this presentation they will also offer a popsicle just like you get a sweet treat when you say "trick-or-treat." We have included the ingredients and label below and we will reach out to families who might have allergies or dietary needs.

Counseling Updates
Hello Miller! Part of my role as a school counselor consists of connecting families with varying resources. You will note a link to a list of Community Resources should you wish to explore resources for your child outside of the school setting. During the school year, Miller offers a variety of opportunities to assist families with financial needs through partnering with our PTO. By reaching out to me via completing this form, phone, email or in-person, I can assist your student with funds for upcoming Book Fairs or the Holiday Shop, holiday gifts, Thanksgiving “baskets,” winter clothing including jackets, pants and boots; purchase of the class T-shirt, purchase of a yearbook, school supplies and any other need brought to my attention. Please do not hesitate to contact me with the slightest concern. Feel free to simply let me know what you need, and I’ll connect with you to ensure this need is fulfilled!

PBIS - Teaching School Expectations
We have finished explicitly teaching all 6 of our school wide PBIS expectations! These skills have been taught and practiced during the first 6 weeks of the school year so that your children can become responsible, respectful, and problem solvers throughout their school day. It's important to remember that many of these skills will need continued practice and repetition so that they become more automatic. We will continue to take notice of areas of strength and areas we need to practice throughout our school day. Here is a reminder of the big ideas that we have been working on.
- I can have a safe body!
- I am ready to learn!
- I can try first, then ask for help!
- I can stop, think and make a good choice!
- I can be a good friend and use kind words!
- I can share, take turns and wait!
We will continue to earn Greenmen Poms and celebrate our great choices! As soon as we fill up our classroom buckets and school wide buckets, we will enjoy some fun rewards! There will be times when we need to review a skill and reteach the expected behavior. We feel these are teachable moments and take time to stop and review them with your children. If you see a "We solved a problem or Reflection Sheet" come home, this is one way we communicate with you to review the same skill at home. We might include a small note, a social story, or some tips to help ensure children are learning appropriate school choices. Please let us know if you need any support at home reinforcing any of these skills across other settings.
Nursing Updates
We have a school nurse, Jackie Pawlowski, on staff during school hours. She is here each day to assist students at a time of need or illness. Here are some important reminders to ensure the safety of our school community each day:
- Please make sure your Final Forms medical information is up to date. We will closely read the health sections to address any medical concerns. If your child requires medication (over the counter or prescription) during the school day, we must have a signed medication form on file. You can find this attached below.
- It is important to check your child each day for symptoms of illness as you know them best. If they become I'll during the day, or are injured, we will reach out to you and let you know if their symptoms are worsening. We call home for injuries, fevers, and continued sickness. We do not call home for every trip to the nurse for a band-aid, ice pack or upset tummy. We certainly will call if symptoms worsen. We sometimes use our School Nurse Cell Phone
- Students sent home with a fever, vomiting or diarrhea may not return to school until they are free of these symptoms or without medication for at least 24 hours. This means if your child was sent home on Tuesday at 12:00 p.m. with a fever, he/she may not return to school until 24 hours later. If your child does return the next day, our school will be calling for you to come pick him/her up. Please help to support our efforts in this area.
- We are required to report to families if there is a confirmed communicable disease in your child's class. This could include strep, pink eye, COVID, RSV, hand-foot and mouth or other illnesses.
Finally, please make sure your child has extra clothes in his/her backpack. Accidents and spills happen all the time and it's safe to always have their own clothes in their book bag instead of wearing our spare clothes.

Miller Attendance & Transportation Reporting Form
In all our Elementary Buildings, we utilize a Google Form to report attendance, late arrival, early dismissal, and change of transportation such as switching from a bus rider to office pick-up!
To report an absence or change, please scan the QR code below or click the button to fill out our Google form. This can be done from any device and your reply will be sent immediately to our secretary, Mrs. Toler.
Also, if your child is absent, instead of calling us, you can also use this code to report the absence and the reason for the absence. We are working really hard to reduce the amount of phone calls, emails, or notes that we receive. We ask that you reserve those modes of communication for emergencies only. Thank you in advance for your help and let us know if you have any questions at all!

We would also like to share an opportunity for our parents to discover Jonathan Haidt's compelling insights in "The Anxious Generation." He argues that the rise of screen time and the decline of free play are major contributors to the growing anxiety and depression among youth and children. Be part of the conversation that could help shape a healthier future for the next generation.
