Stanwood-Camano School District
Learn about our replacement levy on the Feb. 13 ballot
The school bell doesn't signal an end to learning and growth. For some, it can signal an exciting gateway to new experiences and personal development.
This is the power of after-school sports and extracurricular activities. These can be game-changers, enriching the lives of students in countless ways.
Our levy funds most of our costs to provide these opportunities, as sports and extracurricular activities are not part of the state's definition of "basic education funding."
In Stanwood-Camano, more than 1,000 of our about 2,500 students in grades 6-12 participate in sports throughout the school year. In addition to sports, more than 1,200 students participate in a wide array of extracurricular activities throughout the school year.
Studies show that participation in after-school activities can ...
- boost academic performance by improving focus, memory, and problem-solving skills
- enhance cognitive function and learning
- improve critical thinking and creativity
- promote regular attendance
- ignite passion for learning
- build confidence through overcoming challenges and mastering new abilities
Without local levy funding, there would be layoffs and elimination of programs across our school district — including within athletics. Where and to what degree services are reduced would be decided later with input from students, staff, and the community as part of a Budget Reduction Plan.
