OCTOBER 2024
TOGETHER WE LIGHT THE WAY
PRINCIPALS MESSAGE
A note from Dr. Hitchman
I would like to begin my message with a quick math exercise. During the month of September, we had 20 consecutive days of school. Add 6 days of school during the month of August and we’ve had 26 days of school before October 1. We are currently a little more than halfway through the 1st marking period. Add the 18 days of school during the month of October and we will have had how many days of school? By the end of this month, we will have finished the 1st marking period and seniors will be one quarter closer to graduation on Thursday, June 12.
The adjustment back to school after summer break can be a difficult transition. We also have quite a number of students taking honors, AP and DE classes for the first time. I encourage all students and parents to check Student Vue and Parent Vue on a weekly basis for the to ensure grades for the 1st marking period are where you want them to be. I would also like to remind students and parents there are several opportunities for students to receive academic assistance during the school day. Our Student Support Advisor (SSA), is checking student interim grades and is touching base with students who have multiple D’s or F’s. Our math interventionist is coordinating our peer tutoring program and our reading specialist is meeting with students who are reading below grade level as measured by the iReady assessment. Our Writing Center is open and available for students who would like someone to review and provide feedback on a research paper. Students also have the opportunity to meet with a teacher every Friday during their flex block. Students can simply select which teacher they want to see on Fridays for either remediation or possible clarification before a major summative assessment. There are 3 Friday’s remaining in the 1st marking period for students to seek assistance. We want to see all of our Bolts succeed and we encourage students to take advantage of these academic opportunities.
Unfortunately we continue to hear about threats being made to schools and even worse, violence in some instances. Please know your child’s safety is our top priority. While we have a school resource officer, safety and security officers, and over 250 cameras, in most instances, we find out information from students, parents, or staff. After a tragedy occurs, the investigation usually discovers someone knew something before the event. While our first thought may be physical safety, there is also social and emotional safety as well. At the end of September, we hosted assemblies regarding the dangers of fentanyl and opioids. The powerful message from the Song for Charlie presentation was it only takes one pill to kill! While the video shared during the assembly showed students in other states, a picture of Loudoun County students whose lives were unfortunately cut short due to fentanyl was also shown. Information regarding the Song for Charlie presentation, including resources available to parents to speak with their children about the dangers of fentanyl, was included in last week’s Coffee & Chat session. If you have concerns regarding your child, or someone else's child, please feel free to reach out to our school counselors, substance abuse specialist, myself, or any member of the Lightridge administrative team. Hear something, see something, say something isn’t just a slogan for physical safety, it also applies to social, emotional, and mental health as well. Thank you for taking the time to read the October Bolt Report and together we light the way!
DONATION OPPORTUNITY
Have you heard from your students about our FLEX block? We could use additional tables and chairs. Would you consider donating? You can donate money for a chair or sponsor a table and chairs with a donation name plate included on the table. Make a mark at Lightridge.

College Board National Recognition Programs
The College Board National Recognition Programs award academic honors to high-performing, underrepresented students. The five national recognition programs include the National African American Recognition Program, National First-Generation Recognition Program (beginning in 2024), National Hispanic Recognition Program, National Indigenous Recognition Program, and National Rural and Small Town Recognition Program.
Recipients are strong academic performers. Students who take eligible administrations of the PSAT/NMSQT, PSAT 10, or AP Exams and meet the score requirements are considered for awards. Students must also identify as African American/Black, Hispanic/Latino, Indigenous/Native American, first-generation, and/or attend high school in a rural area or small town. Many colleges intentionally recruit awardees, and school communities often celebrate students who receive these awards.

LCPS schools use ParentVUE as our primary tool for families to communicate student absences, tardies, and early dismissals to our school. You will find the Report Attendance option in both the mobile app and web version for all your children. Note that this function only reports attendance to the front office - teachers will not see the notes submitted through this process.
Additionally, parents can opt-in or out of push notifications and emails for attendance.
Push Notifications: enable using the ParentVUE app on your mobile device. You will receive notifications for both period and daily attendance.
Emails: enable using either the ParentVUE web portal or with the ParentVUE app. You will receive emails for period attendance only.

Schedule Changes
We have reached the time in the year when many students are starting to ask for a schedule change. We would like to remind you that during the course selection process, students chose to challenge themselves by taking these classes, understanding that many of them require alot of extra time and effort. We are now asking to see the grit and perseverance required for success. Perseverance is more than a skill—it's a mindset that can transform challenges into opportunities for growth and success. For teens, learning to persevere through difficulties not only helps them navigate the complexities of adolescence but also equips them with the resilience to face life's future challenges. Perseverance is the ability to keep trying to achieve something despite challenges, failure, or opposition. It's also known as grit, tenacity, or resilience.
- talk to your teacher and discuss your concerns and fears
- work with your teacher on strategies for improvement
- complete all coursework and homework, this allows the teacher to understand where you are struggling and offer appropriate feedback
- use learning lab time to get extra assistance, you selected this course out of interest and ability - work at it!
If a student has tried all of these avenues and does not feel success is attainable, the student may speak to their counselor about a possible change and any implications this change may have for the year or for graduation.
Please keep in mind there are class caps in many courses that cannot be exceeded, therefore a change is not always possible and sometimes a change may result in mulitple class and/or teacher changes in the schedule.
As always, please feel free to reach out to your child's counselor if you have any questions/concerns.
2025 Summer Residential Governor's Schools
2025 Summer Residential Governor's Schools guides and applications will be available on October 11. Summer Residential Governor’s Schools provide high school juniors and seniors with intensive educational experiences in visual and performing arts; humanities; mathematics, science, and technology; or through mentorships in marine science, or engineering.
Each Summer Residential Governor’s School focuses on one special area of interest. Students live on a college or university campus for up to four weeks each summer. During this time, students are involved in classroom and laboratory work, field studies, research, individual and group projects and performances, and seminars with noted scholars, visiting artists, and other professionals. In the three mentorships, students are selected to work side-by-side with research scientists, physicians, and a variety of other professionals. A director and a student-life staff provide supervision of students 24 hours a day, throughout the program.

LISTEN UP LIGHTRIDGE
Partners for Teen Safe Driving
Lightridge will be hosting our first of two "Partners for Teen Safe Driving" 90-minute presentations on October 2nd at 7 p.m. It is required for both the 10th grade student driver and a parent/guardian to attend one of our two sessions.
Please note that if you arrive late, you will be asked to return on the next available date (December 5th). If you miss both dates, you will need to attend another LCPS school offering this presentation or wait until next fall. Failure to attend will result in your child not completing the driver’s education course (not getting a DEC-8 card), receiving an "N" on their report card, and delaying their ability to get a driver's license until they turn 18 and can go to the DMV directly.
Please make sure your child brings their school issued Chromebook and charger, as they will need it to complete the affirmation of attendance form.
NASA Programs
The Virginia Space Grant Consortium provides FREE NASA-related programs for Virginia's high school students in 10th, 11th, and 12th grades. The programs have an interactive online STEM learning experience and are highlighted by a seven-day residential summer academy at NASA.
