Principal's Message
Hello Parents,
Happy Friday! I hope you all enjoyed a good week. We have had a busy week at Duniway as we are moving through the month of March and have one week remaining before Spring Break. We noticed that many kids (and adults :) seemed extra tired this week as we all adjusted to the time change from daylight savings last week. Some of the highlights from this week were 1st grade students making a field trip to the Oregon Zoo, Fourth Grade students having a visit from puppies from Puplandia Dog Rescue, and students finishing their art and ceramic projects with Duniway Artist and Residence program. It was also great to attend our PTA meeting this week and see such a large turnout. We heard information about a Bond Campaign for a new Cleveland High School and met a new school board candidate Stephanie Englesman. I shared information about our school staffing, budget and projected enrollment for next school year (I shared details about this in our school newsletter last week). We also discussed innovative ideas for our school foundation to support our school for next year. Looking ahead to next week, I know we are all excited about our Book Fair and I hope you will all come out and support this event. I hope you all enjoy an enjoyable and restful weekend and I look forward to seeing you next week!
Principal Melvin

Duniway Foundation Update
Hello, Duniway Community!
I hope you’re all soaking up these gorgeous sunny winter days—spring is just around the corner! And with it comes two incredible Duniway Foundation events that will bring us all out to celebrate our amazing school and raise essential funds for our students.
That’s right—TWO fundraisers this spring! We’re making it a season of connection, creativity, and fun while supporting the programs that make Duniway so special. Here’s what’s coming up:
🌸 Spring Art Reception 📍 Sellwood Community House
Saturday, April 26th | 6:00 PM - 9:00 PM FREE to Attend
Join us for an evening dedicated to creativity and community! This special event will showcase the incredible classroom art projects, available in a silent auction. The highest bidders will take home these one-of-a-kind pieces, all while supporting vital programs in art, reading, and student services.
In addition to the art auction, we’ll also be hosting a raffle and offering the first chance to sign up for kid parties—always a favorite! Don’t miss this opportunity to support our school while enjoying a wonderful night out.
🎫 26th Annual Duniway Spring Auction – “Nantucket Nights” 📍 The Evergreen
Friday, May 9th | 6:30 PM - 11:30 PM Tickets Go LIVE 3/31
Our biggest fundraiser of the year is back—and this time, we’re bringing the East Coast vibes to Portland! This year’s event will be all about celebrating together, featuring:
✨ Sign-Up Parties (a fan favorite—want to host one? Let’s chat!)
🎁 Class Baskets & Silent Auction (have a vacation home or experience to donate? We’d love it!)
🍴 Hearty appetizers & cocktails (because no one wants to bid on an empty stomach!)
💛 Paddle Raise (because every bid supports our students!)
🎶 Live Band & Dancing (for the first time ever—bring your moves!)
This year we'll be skipping the sit-down dinner—this night is all about mingling, laughing, and actually finishing those half-conversations we always start! So grab your best coastal-chic outfit and your dancing shoes. It’s going to be a night to remember!
💙 How You Can Help:
We’re looking for vacation home donations, unique experiences or ticketed events, sign-up party hosts, and event sponsors to make this event a success. If you can contribute, please reach out—we’d be so grateful for your support! auction@duniwayfoundation.com

Seeking GOTR Assistant Coach
Needed:
.5 Assistant Coach for our Duniway Girls on the Run team! We have a recent volunteer who can serve as an assistant coach, but needs to share the position with another - could this be you? This .5 position would be for one practice per week, on a Monday or a Friday. Please consider, for once we have this position fully filled, we can unfreeze our Duniway team registration, which had to be frozen when we went down to one full-time coach. Thanks very much for considering - it is really an amazing program and I can vouch for it, being a former GOTR assistant coach myself
- Monika Soennichsen
Please consider serving as an ASSISTANT COACH for the Duniway Girls on the Run team!
Our team registration is now frozen until we have a second coach on board, and the team is already over half-full with registered team members, and others waiting to join when we are able to open after again having 2 coaches. There is a great deal of interest and it will be a great deal of fun and an awesome experience for all!
Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based positive youth development program that inspires girls, grades 3-5 (and grades 6-8 as "Heart and Sole") to be joyful, healthy, and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running.
GOTR coach application info: Each site needs a minimum of two coaches. Ideally, each team will have one head coach (at least 21 years old who identifies as female), and two assistant coaches (at least 18 years old). Coaches can be teachers, parents, or other community members who are dedicated to empowering girls to reach their full potential and live a healthy lifestyle. A coach does not have to be a runner.
The coach application can be found here: https://www.gotroregon.org/coach.
Please see the Duniway GOTR team informational flyer and/or reach out to Monika Soennichsen, School Counselor and Duniway GOTR Site Liaison, for more information.
