The Hickman Mills C-1 School District (HMC-1) Board of Education, along with the district’s Executive Leadership Team led by Superintendent of Schools Yaw Obeng, is proud to announce Kimberly A. Shaw, Ed.D., as the new principal of Ingels Elementary. Kacy Parker, Ed.S., who is currently a supplemental teacher at Freda Markley Early Childhood Center, has been named the school’s interim principal for the 2022-23 school year.
Dr. Shaw comes to HMC-1 from Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools, where she worked more than 20 years in various roles as a teacher and an administrator. More specifically, Dr. Shaw served as an Elementary Special Education Teacher, Special Education Instructional Coach and General Education Literacy Coach, Special Education Coordinator, Director of Special Education, and most recently, Instructional Improvement Officer. Dr. Shaw will assume her new position effective July 1, 2022.
Ms. Parker has more than 30 years of experience in education. She joined the Freda Markley team in 2015. Before that, she held positions as the Assistant Principal of Instruction, Assistant Principal of Discipline, and an Instructional Coach at Lee A. Tolbert Community Academy. She has also held positions as a teacher, literacy coach, and reading first program coordinator with Kansas City Public Schools. Her first day as interim principal is July 11, 2022.
Ervin Elementary inspires students with Literary Magazine club
Ervin Elementary is one of the many HMC-1 elementary schools that provides students with multiple outlets for artistic expression. This year, Ervin founded the Literary Magazine – a publication showcasing works of art, photography, and writing submitted by various age groups.
The club is one of five new enrichment clubs started at Ervin this year with support from the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) funds. The club is targeted to grade levels 3 – 5, but is open to younger students who demonstrate aptitude and interest in writing.
Student participants are dedicated to their work, meeting twice a week after school for an hour to create their different mediums of art. This dedication shines through. Since the first club meeting in February, there have already been three issues of the magazine published.
Superintendent Obeng surprised the students with a visit at one of their sessions, reading some of their work to them out loud.
The magazine is distributed to every Ervin classroom, as well as the library and the front office for everyone to enjoy. Special thank you to first grade teacher at Ervin, Fiona Carmody, who founded the club.
Jennifer T., Alexandria W., and Tatiana E. will graduate this year and are excited for their next academic journey. Thanks to a Ruskin partnership with Avila University’s Upward Bound Program through TRIO, Ruskin students receive fundamental support in preparation for their higher education career. Support includes instruction in literature, composition, mathematics, science and foreign language, during the school year and over the summer. Students also receive intensive mentoring and support as they prepare for college entrance exams and tackle admission applications, financial aid, and scholarship forms.
The MO-KAN-NE scholarship is awarded annually to Missouri, Kansas, and Nebraska students who participate in the TRIO program. Recipients are recognized for their academic achievements, involvement in their community and/or their ability to articulate how the program has played a role in their lives. Congratulations!
Five Ruskin Seniors Take Home 20/20 Leadership Awards

20/20 Leadership is a Kansas-Missouri youth educational leadership development program whose mission is to provide high school students unique experiential learning opportunities to expand their education beyond the classroom, develop resilient leaders, and build stronger communities.
