Levelland ISD's
December 4th, 2023
The holiday season is in full swing and the next few weeks will undoubtedly be busy. We have many things to be excited about and the Christmas break will be here soon. I was recently reminded that we should be sensitive to the fact that not all of our students are excited about the break. The reasons could vary, but these students might exhibit the stress of the upcoming holiday in a variety of ways. This breaks my heart, as I am sure it does yours as well. Please watch for any signs of anxiety or stress in your students and ask your campus counselor to visit with them.
On Tuesday, we get to honor the legacy of Coach Weese. I hope you can join the basketball teams on this special night.
Go Lobos.

Dean Weese Night tomorrow Night!
LHS is hosting a Dean Weese Night to honor his memory. Coach Weese gathered an incredible 1,207-197 record in a 42-year coaching career that included stints on the high school, collegiate, and professional levels as well as being honored in the Girl's Basketball Hall of Fame. In the fall of 1980, he spent 19 seasons at the helm of the Levelland High School Girl's Basketball program, where he won seven state championships and registered a 551-85 record. He has earned many accolades throughout his years, but will always be remembered as a legend at Levelland ISD. Wear your shirt Tuesday night and come on out to honor him! https://files.gabbart.com/456/deanweesehonorvideo.mp4

Esports will Pay Off After LHS
LHS Esports students visited the Lubbock Christian University esports facility! Esports teacher April Austin says that her students learned from Brandon Hackett, Director of LCU Esports. He informed them about the programs offered at LCU. We were given a tour of the practice and in-game facilities. They also experienced the shoutcasting room. This was a great opportunity for Mrs. Austin's new shoutcasting team, who are now live broadcasting their Esports games to their new Twitch and YouTube channels: @levellandesports. Mr. Hackett taught students about the games available and the minimum ranking required to be eligible for a scholarship to play for LCU. Students learned that they may also be granted a full scholarship to play for their institution based on their ranking in the game. This was a great lesson on what they can do after high school with the skills learned in this LHS class!
Top LMS Readers
LMS Librarian Mixie Clowe is excited to share that she held a Read A Thon at LMS to interest students in reading more often. Students read at home and raised money for doing that! LMS students as a whole read over 14,000 minutes! These are the top students who helped raise $635 for the library. We think you are just great for reading and raising money for the library!
Lobo Diner Students Help Progressive Women's Club
LHS students were caught today in the LMS Lobo Diner baking and icing the cookies for the Progressive Women's Home Tour that is tonight! Under the direction of LMS teachers Melissa Young and Christine Burt, these students are crafting their skills to pave the way for their future after high school. They know all the rules to run a clean kitchen, they followed the recipe by measuring and mixing, baked the 25 dozen cookies, and are now icing them. They were rewarded with getting to taste one that didn't look perfect! Now that's a paycheck in itself! We are so proud that LISD offers this program that enables a better future for graduates and allows us to connect with the Levelland community!
Gratitude Lesson
Capitol students finished up November by learning about gratitude in Counselor Barbara Utley's class. They listened to Gratitude is My Superpower by Alicia Ortego & passed around a gratitude stone naming people, places, and things they are grateful for. Students chose a person to whom they would write a Gratitude Gram and delivered them, making their day of course. Mrs. Utley's students learned that by being grateful they will be happier!
Solar System Study
Do you remember when Jay Leno had "JayWalking" and always asked, "Name the planets?" Well, Mrs. Branch's first graders can name all the planets in order: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. They have been studying the solar system in content reading with Mrs. Branch and ended their study with a fun Kahoots technology program quiz! This was fun to see Principal Howard and Assistant Principal Hicks being quizzed too!
Derek Dunn Visits LHS
Levelland ISD graduate Derek Dunn visited Mr. Hill's LHS Entrepreneur Class last week to give students ideas about how they can tackle being a successful entrepreneur. Mr. Dunn told students how he started a roasted corn business in high school before moving on to rental property. Derek has had his hand in several different businesses since his 2011 graduation, from owning a fleet of limousines to owning a golf cart business. Mr. Dunn explained to students that he is ever-evolving and finding new ideas, such as investing in commercial property. He taught them the difference between passive income and earned income and left the kids with many ideas they should pursue in their future. LHS Counselor Stacey Waddill enjoyed seeing her English student again, too! Thank you, Derek, for revisiting LHS!
