Greetings Tamarack Families
Welcome to May! Hope this finds you well. We are deep into the last quarter of the school year already. State testing is underway in grades 4, 5th & 6th; 3rd graders have completed theirs.
Some logistics and dates:
This coming week, May 5th-9th is School Staff Appreciation Week, big thank you to our Tamarack Community Group who has organized a lunch & some treats ♥️ Our staff appreciation is in celebration of all our school staff and includes our Facilities Staff, Cafeteria Team, English Language Dept., Teaching Assistants, Front Office, PE/Music/Library/OMSI Educators, Classroom Teachers, Special Education Team, Bus Drivers, our Preschool Team and Champions After School. Many of our staff hold more than one position and traverse their day through many roles based on needs, for that I am incredibly appreciative!
May 22nd @ 5pm is our Kindergarten Orientation, if you have a neighbor who has not registered yet, please pass along the invitation. We already have over 50 students registered and we look forward to welcoming another cohort to our community! Additionally we are heading to over 400 students total-hard to believe we opened 2 years ago with 200. We appreciate everyone's patience as we have worked to get to know each and every family in the school as best we can.
And as previously mentioned our (now ) Annual Otter Fun Run will be on May 30. The schedule for your participation, cheering, jogging or walking alongside your student will be sent out again closer to the date.
To put it on your radar now, the last day of school is a half day, students are dismissed at 11:20 on June 12th. Students who ride the bus will still ahve a bus at 11:20 that day. That morning, 6th grade families will be invited to a Promotion Ceremony in our Gym, at 8:15 am.
The following day, June 13th, our Tamarack Community Groups arranged one last school year fundraiser at Chick Fil-A.
Proud to be HSD!
It’s time for our annual Proud to be HSD Festival and you don’t want to miss it! This showcase of student achievement and talent takes place during the Farmers Market in downtown Hillsboro from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, May 10, 2025.
Here are some highlights:
Performance Stage on the Washington County Courthouse Lawn - See performances from our middle and high school bands and choirs.
STEAM Pavilion on the Civic Center Plaza - Student groups from several schools will demonstrate their innovative science, technology, engineering, art, and math projects - many of which have interactive elements.
Career and College Pathways Area on the Civic Center Plaza - High school students in various career pathways will share what they are learning in the hands-on classes that prepare them for life after graduation.
School Mascots - Watch for your favorite school mascot walking through the festival. Give them a wave, take a picture, and maybe even start a little dance-off!
5K Fun Run - For the third year, we will be including a free 5K Fun Run to kick off the day. Anyone who is interested in participating should meet in the Lincoln Street Elementary School Parking lot by 8:15 a.m. to sign in and get ready for the run/walk to begin at 8:30 a.m.
Too Sick for School Guidelines/Allergy Season/Sun Screen
As we enter into allergy season for some, know that you can check in any medications your student might need at the front office with guidance. Also, here is the guidance for sunscreen from our HSD Nursing Team: Students are permitted to wear sun-protective clothing and sunscreen while outdoors. Non-prescription sunscreen may be family provided and student carried without medication authorization forms. Hillsboro School District has a limited quantity of SuperGoop SPF 30 mineral sunscreen (15.7% zinc oxide) this school year When available, this may be dispensed to students in need during sunny outdoor activities unless parents/guardians indicate otherwise in advance.
Also, a reminder that school promptly starts at 8am. Doors open at 7:30 am and we are glad to support students here in the cafeteria for breakfast or in the gym as they wait for the first bell at 7:50am with a 10 minute supervised buffer to walk to class and put away their backpacks, etc…. For the month of April, we have over 145 occasions of arriving late to school, sometimes a few minutes other times missing 30+ minutes. Elementary school is a good opportunity to start an on time habit knowing that in the future it will be a first period, with an A/B schedule, therefore missing an entire class, making students feel anxious and overwhelmed about being behind. We are here to help, if you need, as a parent I know it is tough to get out the door and if it is a bus issue please let us know so we can help make the bus an easy and safe transport.
