Friday 21st March
Headteacher's Welcome
Dear Parents and Carers,
Thankfully Spring has arrived so we all intend to take teaching outside a little more and start gardening once again.
This week Year 1 & 2 have enjoyed a trip to Wisley Gardens whilst others took part in a netball, football activities and music rehearsals. Next week we have a Pupil Parliament event for two of our Year 6 pupils who have been elected to represent our school within the borough and Year 5 have a trip planned to Hampton Court.
We have had three groups of PE students from St Mary’s College taking PE lessons across the school at the present time. They have also been running some multi-sports clubs which the children are enjoying. They finish up with us at Easter. We have enjoyed the students and their lecturers.
Lenten Mass attendance and Confessions
Year 6 attended Mass on Wednesday morning at the parish and led the Stations of the Cross for the parishioners; Year 5 will attend next week. Father Stephen also came in to take Confessions for children during this season of Lent. Thank you Father Stephen.
In the upcoming weeks Year 3, 4 and 5 will be preparing Holy Week Liturgies so that the children at school are able to understand and reflect on the events of Holy Week. Year group parents will be invited to attend these. Your class teacher will inform you of details in their weekly email.
Infants are looking forward to welcoming mum’s for a Mother’s Day tea next Friday morning and Nursery parents, dads too, are welcome to join in the Nursery Stay and Play Session afterwards.
Lenten Charities
We always try to support two charities during Lent. Year 5, as part of their Caritas project, are co-ordinating school fundraising for Glass Door (a local homeless charity) via a Books and Toy sale on Wednesday 26th March in the infant playground as well as a sponsored walk on Thursday 3rd March . Ways you can help. Please donate some old but good condition toys and maybe buy a new toy at the sale. Sponsor a Year 5 child using the link https://www.justgiving.com/campaign/sacredheart-loveinaction25
The second charity that we are supporting is the Catholic Children’s Society. They have helped a number of families in our school community so we like to give back to them when we can. The children have opted to keep things simple and have a Dress Down Day next week on Thursday 27th March. If children could bring a £1 or some coins from their money box that would be appreciated.
Bills
A gentle reminder to please bring payments up-to-date on Sco-Pay so that bills due in March are paid before the end of the financial year. Thank you.
Have a lovely weekend.

Other News
London Youth Games Festival
On Tuesday, the Year 3 & 4 Girls Football team went to Ilford by train and tube to the London Youth Games Festival. In the morning we did skills sessions then after lunch we played 7 matches. We won 5, lost 1 and drew 1. In all our matches we tried our hardest and we did very well. We were exhausted!
Netball Friendly vs Collis
On Monday evening, the whole of the Netball Squad (excluding a couple of unfortunately unwell absetees), walked round to Collis to play in 2 'friendly' Netball matches. Both teams were playing extremely well across all four quarters.
On one of the courts, Sacred Heart took the lead and continued this the whole way through the match, with excellent goals from Eli, Isla, and Genjiro amongst others. The first quarter began quickly with the score quickly rising to 5-0, before scoring 3 more in the second taking us to 8-0. During the third quarter we kept up the pace and managed to raise the score further to 11-0. After the fourth quarter the score ended up 14-0 to Sacred Heart. The team played brilliantly and held their own against a fast (and very tall!) team.
On the other court, it was a much more even game with the first quarter remaining at a stalemate (0-0) and both teams having opportunities to take the lead. During the second quarter, Sacred Heart took the lead but only for a minute or so when Collis equalised. During the third quarter, again the team both had chances but neither scored and during the fourth quarter we once again went 2-1 up before Collis got the upper hand and scored 3 in quick succession. The score ended 4-2 to Collis but this scoreline does not reflect how close we were to winning this match too- the team did themselves proud.
A good experience and great practice for those children continuing with Netball next year and for those Year 6's moving onto secondary school where they may decide to continue their netball playing careers.
Well done everyone for a great season- Miss O'Brien couldn't have asked you to try any harder and has enjoyed coaching you this year.
Year 1 & 2 to Wisley Gardens
Year 1 and Year 2 had an amazing time at Wisley Gardens. The day began with an exciting workshop about plants, where the children learned how to take cuttings and plant them in soil. They were thrilled to take their plants home and watch them grow!
After that, they helped with planting peas and explored the herb garden, discovering different scents and textures. The fun continued in the playground, where they climbed, jumped, and played to their hearts’ content.
Later, the children took part in a scavenger hunt in the beautiful walled garden, searching for hidden treasures in nature. To make the day even more perfect, the sun shone brightly, making the experience even more enjoyable.
It was a fantastic day filled with learning, adventure, and plenty of fun!
Lenten Prayer
Merciful God, you call us to repentance, not in fear, but in love. Like the barren fig tree, we are given time to grow—help us to use this season well. Show us the areas of our lives that need transformation and give us the grace to bear good fruits filled with love. Open our hearts to Your call and lead us to new life in You.
Amen.

Emotion Coaching for Parents, Governors and other Stakeholders
We would like to invite you to attend a training opportunity being run in partnership with the Achieving for Children Virtual School and the Achieving for Children Educational
Psychology Service, as part of the Attachment Aware Schools Award.
The training, titled "Introduction to Emotion Coaching," will provide you with insights into why children (and all of us) experience emotions, and the different parts of the brain that control our responses to stress and emotions. You'll learn how to use this knowledge to respond to children in a way that helps them to better understand and manage their feelings. Specifically, the training will cover:
- Understanding the theory behind Emotion Coaching
- Why Emotion Coaching is a useful approach
- The four steps of Emotion Coaching
- How to create scripts that you can use in your everyday interactions with children
By the end of the training, you will feel more confident in your ability to support children's emotional needs and help them to develop emotional resilience.
When: Thursday 8th May 2025 @ 9:15am, Sacred Heart Primary School Hall.
