YouTube superstar Gerry Brooks will be in Lyons on Monday, February 19th for a professional development day discussing positive culture in school with over 600 educators from 12 school districts. For the past two weeks, USD 405 employees have had a chance to win Gerry Brooks prizes in a daily drawing. The final six winners are shown below.

Social Media Superstar Visits Lyons
Gerry Brooks is an elementary school principal from Lexington, Kentucky who went viral with his videos imitating actual phone calls and conversations he has had with parents and staff members over the years. He has developed a following of over 5 million on his various social media platforms. He spoke to nearly 700 teachers and other professionals who work with children and youth from 12 area school districts at the Lyons High School auditorium on February 19th, discussing his ideas on developing positive culture and climate in a school building.

Three LHS Girls Wrestlers Qualify for State
After a highly successful regular season, the Lyons High School girls wrestling squad continued their success at Regionals, qualifying three girls for the State tournament. Congratulations to Kennedy Grizzle, Kyrsten Young, and Alexa Guzman. The State tournament will be in Salina on February 22-24.
Six LHS boys wrestlers qualify for State
Six Lyons High School boys wrestlers qualified for the State tournament by placing at Regionals on February 17th. Qualifiers include Easton Benavidez, AJ Almanza, Jace Grizzle, Isaac Fall, Nate Dold, and Elijah Martinez. They compete at State on February 22-24 in Salina.
Homecoming Pep Rally
Central Elementary Students joined Lyons Middle School and Lyons High School students for the Homecoming pep rally on February 9th. One of the highlights of the assembly was a dodge ball game that pitted faculty against students.

Congratulations to Homecoming queen Yaretzy Peña and king Edwin Rodriguez who were crowned at the February 9th basketball Homecoming games versus Hoisington!
LMS Represented Well at Middle School District Honor Band
Thirty-one Lyons Middle School students participated in the Kansas Music Educators Association South Central Kansas Middle School Honor Band in Andover on February 10. The performances were divided into first-year students, second-year students, and third-year students. Lyons Middle School first-year students participating included: Alexa Armendariz, Jax Cain, Brooklyn Curzon, Colton Fistler, Violet Geeves, Valerie Gomez, Aniiyah Jeffery, Chloe Johnston, Mistic Latham-Pinson, Jade Leiker, Becca McCormick, Haidyn McCormick, Julia Paz Puig, and Avery Watts. LMS students participating in the second-year band were: Aaliyah Gonzalez, Elie Jaske, Neriah Nolan, Janessa Peterman, Aylin Renteria, Blake Roberts, Roma Taylor, Gerardo Vazquez, and Aaron Villasenor. Third-year students participating included: Logan Allen, Bradly Curzon, Noah Geeves, Hayden Linden, Legend Miranda, Adahir Rivera, Kolton Smith, and Jon Steele.
LHS LifeSmarts Team Qualifies for Nationals
The Lyons High School LifeSmarts team won the LifeSmarts State competition and qualified for the National competition to be held April 18-21 in San Diego. Congratulations and good luck to team members Greta Showalter, Dale Loughridge, Ricardo Tapia, Deacon Showalter, and Will Miller. LifeSmarts is a national consumer education organization.
Elijah Martinez Captures 100th Win
Lyons High School senior wrestler Elijah Martinez not only placed 3rd at Regional Wrestling and qualified for the State tournament, but he also picked up his 100th high school win in the process. Congrats Eli!
LMS Spelling Bee Champions
Congratulations to the Lyons Middle School spelling bee champions. Roma Taylor, Madalynn Bell, and Logan Allen who will compete at the Rice County Spelling Bee on Saturday, February 24th at 9AM at Windom Elementary.
Colonel Allen Speaks at Rotary
Lyons High School Air Force Junior ROTC Senior Aerospace Instructor Russ Allen was the guest speaker at the Lyons Rotary Club on February 13th. Colonel Allen discussed the status of the LHS cadet corps, which currently stands at 28 students or 13% of the student body. The corps has plans to begin studying UAS (Unmanned Aircraft Systems) or drone piloting. Colonel Allen plans to complete training over the summer to enable him to teach the class to LHS cadets. Cadets would have the option to sit for the FAA licensing exam after completing the course. Colonel Allen said he is excited about the future of the program and credits Aerospace Instructor Senior Master Sergeant Angela Evans with getting the program back on its feet over the past year.
