Your connection to all things in GCPS...
Your connection to all things GCPS. | April 18, 2024
Each month of the 2023-24 school year, we will spotlight one of our strategic priorities or Portrait of a Graduate competencies by sharing the stories of two clusters—highlighting their classrooms, notable events, community insights, achievements, community service projects, student organizations, volunteer efforts, and more.
Excellence
GCPS students and staff know that excellence is not optional; it is the standard. They recognize that GCPS is a preferred education destination; and have access to postsecondary and workforce readiness pathways to success, based on demonstrated knowledge, skills, abilities, and interests. GCPS supports two-way communication and believes families are partners in supporting student learning and development.
In April, we'll focus on Excellence in the Berkmar and Discovery clusters.

Time to register your child for Dual Language Immersion Programs
GCPS is excited to offer Dual Language Immersion (DLI) programs at 11 elementary schools. Spanish DLI programs are available at Annistown ES, Baldwin ES, Bethesda ES, Camp Creek ES, Hopkins ES, Ivy Creek ES, Level Creek ES, Meadowcreek ES, and Mulberry ES. Parsons ES offers Korean DLI, and French is available at Trip ES. The DLI program targets students entering Kindergarten with continuing curriculum support through 5th grade. The goal of this immersion program is to educate children to achieve bilingual skills in English and the partner language. The best part is that with GCPS’ 50/50 Model, at least 50% of the school day is spent learning the AKS in the partner language and the other 50% is taught in English. A team of two teachers—one fluent in the partner language and one English speaker— work together, with class time for math, science, and target language literacy in the partner language, and language arts and social studies in English.
Enrollment is voluntary, starting with incoming kindergartners and building by one grade level every year. (Information sessions are offered to parents before registration.) The GCPS DLI program is intended both for English-speaking students who wish to develop a second language as well as native and heritage-speaking families of Spanish, French, or Korean students who wish to develop literacy and deep cultural understanding of their home language culture and cultures of countries in which the language is spoken. Click here for more information about the program.
