As we close the first month of the new year, new positives have been rolling through FMS. From HUGE growth scores for testing, new seasons for MS basketball starting, and another successful rating from the Iowa Department of Education, students continue to do excel.

This Winter we had significant growth in areas that our student body were tested in. A large shout out and thank you to our staff and students for putting in so much effort into making student learning a priority and showing what they have learned! Celebrate with your student on the work their grade has made so far this year as we near the end of Trimester 2!

Did you know that as a parent/guardian, you are able to observe what your student is working on in their classes or what assignments are due? Here are some instructions in case you would like to observe Canvas as an Observer:

1. In the student's account select Account > Settings > Pair with Observer > Copy Code

- (If this is the first time the parent has been in Campus as an observer, they select "Parent of a Canvas User" on the login page, then enter the pairing code on the next screen).

- (If they already have an account / have been an observer for another student previously, after they log in, the parent would go to: Account > Settings > Observing & Paste in the code).

2. Click on this link to go to the FCSD Canvas page.

3. Select "Parent of a Canvas User".

- Each observer will need their own code, so two parents/guardians can't each have a separate Canvas account and use the same code.

As we are now into the cold of the winter season, snow and low temperatures will now play a factor in students going outside. Please check with your student to ensure that they are dressing appropriately for the weather. Students will go outside if the real feel temperature is 10 degrees or higher, and 5th grade will go outside for afternoon recess if the real feel temperature is above 0 degrees.

If snow is on the ground, students will go outside on hard surfaces only. Students may walk in the snow if they bring a pair of boots to change into. They also may play in the snow if they have snow boots and snow pants to wear in it. Otherwise, they will be on hard surfaces only. If your student needs cold weather clothing to stay warm, please reach out to the school and let us know.

This year we are offering students an opportunity to get caught up on missing assignments on our 2:00 dismissals on Fridays during our Homework Club! Each week, Mrs. Marten will communicate with parents of students who need to stay after school. Then, she will set up students with an FMS staff member to assist until 3:30 with the goal to provide students time to complete their assignments and stay caught up in their classes. We also have transportation available if needed. Be sure to be on the lookout for communication from Mrs. Marten!
