Dear CST Family!

Nice job and congratulations to two of our fall sports teams. Both cross country and volleyball concluded their seasons this past week. Capping off a season of success in both sports, I'm so proud of the ongoing effort and improvement shown by our students. Their daily commitment at practice and working through nerves ahead of games/meets are all part of the experience and one all our athletes can now say they've grown from and completed.

THIS Wednesday is our NIGHT FOOTBALL game at ODAC. Kick-off is at 6pm against Oregon Trail but all students are invited to the pre-game tailgate in the southwest parking lot of ODAC. CST's Father's Club is hosting a tailgate complete with food, music, activities, and FUN! Students may be dropped off at 4:30pm in the SW parking lot for this tailgate. At 5:30, students will be walked over to the stadium. Concessions are available for purchase inside the stadium as well. Food will be limited at the tailgate. Also, we are collecting canned food items to support our drive for the Johnson County Christmas Bureau.

Hard to believe, but parent-teacher conferences are fast approaching. The format is similar to past years with 10/14 - 10/18 designated as conference week. Here's how it works at CST...

• Arena Style on Wednesday, 10/16 from 4:30-8:30pm--Teachers are set up in the gym and MPR to meet with parents on a first come, first serve basis. There are no appointments during this time.
• Teachers will begin communicating on 9/25 their availability and sign-up opportunities for appointments during conference week. Times will vary by teacher aside from when all teachers are available on Wednesday--12:55-3:40pm by appointment and 4:30-8:30pm through arena style.
• Wednesday, 10/16 is a half day for students with an 11:35am dismissal (no lunch on this day for students). Teachers also have time designated for conferences from 12:55-3:40pm and have a dinner break from 3:40-4:30pm before arena conferences begin.
  
• Stay tuned for info coming in the new couple weeks from your child's teachers.

Parent-teacher conferences are fast approaching and we have a wonderful group of parents spearheading a meal/snacks for teachers the week of 10/14-10/17. On Thursday, October 10 School Counselors will be presenting information to CST 8th graders about 21st Century Academies. Students will receive general information on this day.

Each Academy hosts an Open House for students and parents/guardians. During this time, students can see the space, talk with facilitators and students, and learn more about each Academy. Attention Spanish speaking 8th grade students who are interested in learning more about Olathe’s 21st Century Academies and Olathe Advanced Technical Center programs. There is an informational meeting on Thursday October 10th at Santa Fe Middle School. The event starts at 5:45. The entire presentation will be presented in Spanish.

Join us on October 22 from 6-7:30 for an open house reception and celebration of CST's 25th year of serving the community. A self-guided tour of the building will highlight CST past and present and an informal reception will be had in the MPR complete with cookies, punch, and musical performances from our musical groups. As part of our 25th anniversary celebration, we will have 10 raffle baskets for which students/parents can purchase tickets. CST business partners are contributing to this effort, but we'd like reach out to our parent community for any unique connections YOU may have to also contribute to these tickets.

Examples: You are best friends with Patrick Mahomes and are able to get a signed football to put in with a basket. Or, you brother is in charge of Olathe Parks and Rec and can donate 2 season passes to the community center. All students have the opportunity to create a project to submit to the MLK Jr. Contest happening this fall. Students can work individually, with a partner or small group, or with a class. The three categories are writing, visual arts, and multi-media. More info on fliers below!

Intervention cycles begin on Monday at CST. If your child qualified and will be pulled for intervention, a letter will be sent home with further details. These intervention cycles take place during Cat Time and students may cycle in and out of these interventions throughout the year. The communication below explains more. The point of contact for those in intervention is your child's ELA teacher.

As some of you may know, our district has adopted a reading intervention program called 95 Percent to address skills needed for reading fluency. Students are screened in the fall, winter, and spring.

At the beginning of the school year, we look at FastBridge data from this past spring as well as our fall screening data. Based on a student’s performance on one of these measures, they may be identified as a student who possibly needs further reading intervention. Our reading team will work with your student for further screening through our Cat time.

If our screening tools indicate that your student needs to participate in the 95 Percent program with our interventionists, you will hear from them when the time comes.

As you may know, our school has developed a numeracy intervention system to address skills needed for achievement in mathematics. All students are screened periodically throughout the year using standards-based screening measures based on upcoming grade-level content standards. Based on a student’s performance on these measures, they may be identified as a student who possibly needs further numeracy intervention to be successful with grade-level mathematics standards. Should your student be identified, they will work with one of our building’s math intervention teachers during Cat time in order to master identified numeracy skills.

Parents, you received an email from Jostens earlier this week about how to purchase a yearbook for your CST student. Please use the information and links in that email for your yearbook purchases. This year, Jostens is offering many different add-ons for you to choose from - all are optional! Yearbooks start at $27.15 plus tax.

We are so appreciative of the K-cup donations we've received last year! If you are looking for a simple way to support CST staff, we gladly accept and greatly appreciate K-cup donations for our lounge. Our staff LOVE this and use it daily...thank you! These donations can be dropped in the office or on the tables stage in the main hall of the building with tissue boxes.

Middle School Athletic Passes for adults and students are available through GoFan - https://gofan.co/app/school/KS79390

Once purchased, you can transfer the student pass to your student via text message. Passes can only be transferred 1 time. If your student doesn’t have a cell phone, they will receive an ID card with an “A” on it for Athletic Pass that will allow them into athletic events.

All students need to have a Transportation Consent form on file each year. This allows them to travel on buses for athletic and activity purposes. All students will need this as trips are scheduled throughout the year, including an all-school service day in the spring.

Olathe Families,

We are excited to have your families come to support our high school activities and athletics. It is great to see the entire community at these events. It is imperative that our parent community partner with us as we work to encourage positive middle school behavior at high school games or events.

In Olathe we will require that all elementary and middle school students who attend our high school football games enter the game with an adult and sit with that adult throughout the game. Please do not drop your child off at a district complex without supervision as they will not be allowed to enter. It is challenging to monitor and keep all students safe without the help of our parent community.

Thanks for your help with this protocol to make district events a great experience for all who attend.

• Students walking east: stay on sidewalk in front of football field and along Mur-Len--do not cross parking lot entry on 159th St.
• There is no park and pick-up at CST. Doing so creates additional bottle neck trying to exist the parking lot to get onto 159th. Only park if you need to come into the building.
• Dismissal: stay as close to the curb on either side as possible to open up the middle traffic lane
• Dismissal: students may cross to the second lane in front of the school, by the flag pole, only.
• Dismissal: Two lanes of traffic need to form to keep the line from spilling onto and sitting on 159th Street.
• Arrival: Has been going great...thank you!
  

Parents were shared information about personal student devices at school (board policy can be found HERE).

We will review this policy with students as they return this week. Please help us by reminding (informing) students of this change ahead of time. This policy will be a slight shift from last year's practice.

• Personal devices are to be put away from bell to bell--8:20am-3:20pm
• Cell phones and ear buds will be turned into the office if out during the day. This includes passing periods and lunch.
• Headphones/earphones should be wired only
  
• Devices will be labeled and kept in the office until after school where students can pick it up.
• These procedures will be reviewed with students this week.
• Smart watches may be worn for time/step tracking purposes, but active use (i.e. like cell phone) will result in the watch being turned into the office.
• Collected devices will be kept in the office so it can be labeled and kept safe until return.

• Students arriving between 7:30-7:40 – both activity and front doors will be unlocked; remain in foyer
• Students arriving at 7:40—front doors and activity entrance—go to the gym, MPR, or library (7:45)
• Breakfast will be eaten in the MPR
• Students wanting to meet with a teacher between 7:40-8:10am should go to the office to get a pass.
• Students need to wait until the 8:10 “release bell” to go to their lockers or the locker room
• Students should not be in the hallways unless you have a pass/appointment with a teacher.

What do I do after school?

• Bus riders – Gather belongings and head straight out to your bus (front of school)

• Walkers/Bike riders/Skateboarders – walk bikes/carry skateboards while on school property both before and after school - 2 rack locations available - front by science doors and side by Events Entrance

• If you are heading toward Ridgeview, you must walk on the sidewalk by the science doors toward 159th Street.

• If you are heading toward Murlen, you need to walk on the sidewalk that heads toward Mur-len (by the football field) and then turn right and go to the light.

• Students may not cross in front of cars at any time.

• Parents may not park in the parking lot to drop off or pick up students

• If your ride is in the outside lane for pickup, you may ONLY cross at the crosswalk in the front of CST

Reminders:

• There is no park and pick up at CST. Parking is reserved for those needing to come into the building
• Once child is picked up, use the center lane for pass through
• May switch lanes in the PM
  
• Drop off along the ENTIRE curb
  

Please review and follow the traffic patterns for drop-off and pick-up. The established traffic pattern is designed for the safety of our students and families who are in vehicles as well as our bike and walker traffic. Plan ahead and expect delays, especially at the start of the year.

If your child needs to be picked up during the school day, you can call the front office (913-780-7240) and let them know the time. A pass will be sent for your child to be in the office upon your arrival. Please come into the building to check out your child. A state ID (driver's license) is required to enter the building.

If your child is late because of an appointment, you can simply call the office to check them in and have them walk in and report to the attendance secretary (Mrs. Douglas).

Chisholm Trail launched its new PBIS program last school year. PBIS stands for Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports and ROCS is Respect, Ownership, Compassion, and Safety. These four core values are emphasized and taught to our students daily. The program is intentional about teaching students expected behavior. Tokens may be given out for exhibiting expected behavior and those can be used in a "store" to purchase items. These items may be tangible (candy, pop, books, etc.) or intangible (time in the gym, lunch in a special location, sit in the teacher's chair for the day, etc.). The tokens are what helps make ROCS fun, but the conversations this generates between students and staff are also part of what makes this such an impactful program. You will certainly see and hear more but ask your child about ROCS, what it stands for, and why we do it...they should know and may share about their own experience receiving a token or cashing it in!
