Westchester Middle School Newsletter
FRIDAY, August 2, 2024
Message from Mrs. Seiss
Dear Westchester Middle School Parents,
August is here! The first day of school, August 14th, is right around the corner and here at Westchester Middle School all the staff is working hard to prepare the building and classrooms. This week's newsletter has lots of information to help you prepare with your student.
At Westchester Middle School we offer lots of opportunities for students to become involved and make lasting friendships. Please be sure to check out all the clubs and sporting events that are starting up. Encourage your student to try something new this year, like drama club or even cross country.
Again, welcome to Westchester Middle School!
Respectfully,
Lauren Seiss
WMS Principal
Reminders:
48-Hour Attendance Policy for Call Off(s) - Parents/Guardians will have 48 hours to excuse their students absence, after which time it will be considered unexcused.
- Parents who are picking up their child or dropping something off for their child must present a driver's license or state ID to our office staff in order to do so. Also, if a parent sends someone else to pick their student up or drop something off for them, they must not only present identification but must also be on the list in Skyward as a family or emergency contact.
How do I find out my student's teacher / class schedule?
Many parents inquire about their student's class placement for the new school year. Schedules for students in grades 9-12 and class assignments/schedules for grades K-8 will be available on Friday, August 9. This information can be found in your Skyward Parent Portal.
Technology Usage
Cell Phones, Smart Watches, Earbuds, & Earphones Usage:
7th and 8th grade students are not allowed to use their personal communication devices (cell phones and smart watches) during the instructional day. Items used for communication should be stored in lockers to be kept safe throughout the day. If students need to contact a parent/guardian during the day, they are welcome to do so from the office. Classrooms also have phone access. Similarly, students are not permitted to wear personal earbuds with bluetooth capabilities attached to their phones (e.g. Air Pods, etc.). Students will need to use their school-issued iPad earphones for Exact Path lessons and select ILEARN testing sessions. The only time audio ear pieces are permitted are for teacher-assigned classwork and medically-approved needs.
iPad Use
- iPads are the property of Duneland Schools. Students should keep the devices in operable condition.
- Students should refrain from downloading apps, pics, etc. that are not permitted under school and/or corporation policy.
- Students are required to bring their charged iPads to class. Middle school curriculum is designed to utilize iPads for lessons and enrichment activities.

BUS ROUTING and BUS STOP TIMES
Tentative bus routes and bus stop times for this school year will be available for viewing on Skyward. Parents should keep in mind that Transportation is continuing to work on live routing, so these bus routes and bus stop times are subject to change as they make necessary adjustments. Check back on August 12-13 for finalized bus routes and bus stop times for your student.
TRACK STUDENT'S BUS WITH MYSTOP APP
The DSC Transportation has MyStop available for our families. My Stop is a web-based application which allows parents to access live bus GPS information using a smartphone, tablet, or computer and securely view the current location of your child’s bus on routes. The system also provides the bus’s estimated time of arrival at your child’s bus stop. Please read the attached letter to parents for more information on how to use My Stop to track your child's bus.
