Rye Neck Middle School
April 5, 2024 - Issue 14
Dear Rye Neck Families,
I hope this message finds you well. Today's earthquake brought a rush of excitement and perhaps some concern, but rest assured that our safety plan was followed to ensure everyone’s well-being. On a lighter note, as we approach the end of the third marking period on April 12th, I want to update you on some upcoming events at our school:
On Tuesday, Steve Goldberg spoke to students on the power of symbols and language. Encourage your children to reflect on his insights and consider how language and symbols shape our perceptions and interactions with the world. The high school AI club is excited to host a Binary Bingo event on April 17th from 3:00 to 4:30. This promises to be a fun and educational event where students can engage with binary concepts in a creative way. We encourage participation as it's an excellent opportunity for students to expand their understanding of computer science principles in an interactive setting.
Additionally, please note that the NY State ELA Test is scheduled for April 10th and 11th. To ensure your child is prepared, please make sure they get a good night's sleep, eat a nutritious breakfast, and bring their fully charged Chromebooks. These simple steps can greatly contribute to their success on the exam.
If you have any questions or concerns regarding safety protocols, upcoming events, or the State ELA Test, please don't hesitate to reach out to us.
Warm regards,
Dulce
Dr. Dulce Barker

Solar Eclipse
The 2024 solar eclipse will occur on Monday, April 8th. This is both an exciting event and a time for caution. Although it may be tempting to look at the eclipse, even though the sun will be partially obscured by the moon, it’s still the sun: you should never look directly at the sun, whether whole or in part. During science classes, teachers will review tips with students for safe viewing.
According to NASA’s Eclipse Explorer, the eclipse will be visible from Rye Neck in the afternoon between approximately 2:10 and 4:30, with the maximum eclipse of 90% at around 3:25. It is expected to get dark to the level of twilight around that time and there may be increased traffic in the area.
To address the eclipse:
- We ordered and received ISO 12312-2-standard glasses, approved by the American National Standards Institute for all district students and staff. These will be distributed on April 8th. It is important to note that these glasses are only for viewing the eclipse itself: they are too dark for any other activity, such as walking or driving.
- Students will receive education on the eclipse and how to protect themselves in the days preceding the eclipse.
- Our athletic schedules will be modified.
- Intramurals and Modified practices are canceled for the day.
- JV and Varsity teams will be indoors until 4:30 and
- Any games or matches will not begin until 5:00.
- We are staggering our dismissal times by a few minutes at each building as we occasionally have for inclement weather or safety drills. We encourage students to be picked up by car as opposed to walking or biking, so we will alleviate traffic congestion by following this dismissal schedule on the afternoon of April 8th:
- Grade K 2:30 (plus siblings in grades 1 and 2 with the K student)
- Grades 1 and 2 2:45
- Grade 3 3:00 (plus siblings in grades 4 and 5)
- Grades 4 and 5 3:05
- Grades 6, 11, and 12 2:30
- Grades 7 and 10 2:35
- Grades 8 and 9 2:40
Free Breakfast Week
The district will be hosting a free breakfast week from April 8th to April 12th. The cost of one daily breakfast meal per student will be covered by the school district for next week only.
Village of Mamaroneck Community Clean Up

Bike Safety
We would like to remind you of some bike safety rules.
By law, all children ages 13 and under must wear a helmet while riding a bike. In Mamaroneck, bicycle riders must consider the safety of pedestrians on sidewalks (and must dismount and walk their bikes on Mamaroneck Avenue).
Unlike joggers, bicyclists should ride in the same direction as auto traffic while on the road.
Students must be mindful of how they are riding their bicycles while on our MS/HS campus. There are lots of staff, students and parents walking and many cars that are driving during arrival and dismissal.
Please review this New York State resource on Bike Safety. Please remember that all of us who use the roads, whether on foot, on a bike, or in a car, have to pay attention to each other to prevent physical injury.

News From The Classroom:
MS Chorus:
7th Grade ELA - Mr. Tinnirello: Students in seventh grade English classes are more than halfway through the comedy A Midsummer Night’s Dream and have seen a stage production of the play performed by the Shakespeare Theater of New Jersey. Students are also reading their third independent reading book and should complete it by Friday, March 12th.
7th Grade ELA B - Mr. Macli: Next week, on 4/10 and 4/11, students will take the NYS ELA exam. Tests will be online this year. Students will need a fully charged Chromebook, a good night's sleep (at least 8-10 hours), a healthy breakfast, and an optimistic outlook. We will continue to prepare for the test by practicing the online format in class.
7th Grade Art - Ms. Appel: Students finished creating beautiful prints inspired by Henri Matisse’s cut-outs. They used Gelli plates to create their abstract prints inspired by a variety of shapes and layering of the primary colors. Students were able to experiment with creating different colors as they were working. Currently, they are continuing to learn about different printmaking techniques in order to create prints inspired by the work of Andy Warhol and different domestic animals!
8th Grade Art - Ms. Appel: Students just finished learning about the work of Stuart Davis and created collages of different city scenes inspired by his art style. Students used collage techniques to create abstract scenes with a focus on using positive and negative space in their work. Currently, they are learning about Albrecht Dürer, different line techniques, texture, and symmetry to create a variety of insects!
