Strive for 5!
Per Texas State Law, in order to receive credit for a course or grade level, a student must be in attendance 90% of the time. Absences whether excused or unexcused count towards the total.
But even more important than the law is that when your child misses school, they miss the amazing instruction that is happening and there's no way to ever truly make that up. Last year, our students missed a total of 3,320 days of instruction which equals 24,900 hours of awesome teaching that went unexperienced.
We want all of our students to be able to take advantage of as much great teaching as possible, so that's why this year we are encouraging all parents to "Strive for 5!" Strive for 5 or less missed days for your child this school year. Please do not misunderstand- if your child is sick, please, please, please keep them home. However, try to plan vacations around our school holidays so that your child can avoid missing as much instruction as possible.
Many parents don't realize that the vast majority of our funding from the state is directly tied to our daily attendance. Each student that is present each day equates to about $37 in funding. If a student is absent, that amount is lost. $37 may not seem like much, but it adds up quickly! When looking at last year's numbers, LVMS lost $122,840 in funding due to attendance. That funding could allow us to hire more teachers equating to smaller class sizes to benefit our students.
Again, if your child is sick, please keep them home. The last thing we want is for your child to be miserable here at school and to possibly cause another child to be sick. What we are trying to limit is avoidable absences.
Attendance Reminders
- The tardy bell rings at 8:40. Instruction begins immediately at this time.
- Official attendance is taken each day at 9:45. If your child is not physically present at that time, they are counted absent.
- All attendance notes should be given to your child's teacher or emailed to Terri Harkins at tharkins@lagovistaisd.net. Notes should be returned within 3 school days of the absence or appointment.
- Typically, the later in the school day you can schedule needed appointments, the better. You definitely want to avoid the 9:45 time frame if possible.

Lady Vikings Travel to Salado - Twice!
The Lady Vikings double dipped to Salado this past week. They participated in a tournament on Saturday and traveled right back up there Monday evening for district matchups.

These girls did a fantastic job at the Salado tournament this past Saturday! They went 2-1 overall! They were very close to getting a 3rd win against Robinson with the final ending in a 3rd set with a final score of 13-15. They were neck and neck the entire time and played very well! They transitioned without reminders, got 3 touches most of the time, and were very successful with serving! Super proud of their efforts at their first ever tournament!
Monday we traveled back to compete against Salado. Though we did not come out with the win, they played great volleyball and did not make it easy with putting up 16 points against them in the second set! Salado had about everyone jump serving on their 7th grade A team and our girls struggled with serve receive considering but put up a great fight! Both Ashlynn Evans and Evelyn Brown had a block! Eva Navarro, Nova Baker, and Sienna Todd had some great digs in the back row - Towner Sims and Autumn Clements had some great tip plays, along with Scarlett Wright with some great hits and Danni Tristan with assists! Its all starting to come together for this group! Thanks to all the parents who came out to support!

The volleyball tournament in Salado was intense, with tough competition that really tested our skills. We ended the tournament with a much needed win. We returned to Salado on Monday, knowing we were in for another challenging match. The first set started slowly for us, and we fell behind quickly. However, the second set brought a spark of energy, thanks to some motivating words from Cori Davis and Brookley Janson. Their encouragement really lifted the team! Lauren Wood and Starry Danelley made some aggressive plays at the net, which helped us tie the game at 7-7. Aubrey Alves, Cora Larkin, Emery Smith, Teagan Pilz, and Gracyn Koncak also stepped up, each contributing points with solid serves. While we ultimately lost in two sets, I’m proud of how the girls are coming together as a team and consistently improving. Their determination and teamwork are definitely shining through!

The Girls had a really good day last Saturday playing in the Salado Volleyball Tournament. They won all three games played against Robinson, Academy, and Taylor Middle Schools. Lots of much needed reps were had throughout the day as the girls played some of their best volleyball of the season. Monday evening the girls were on the road once again trying to bring the momentum built from Saturday into the match against a very strong Salado volleyball team. The girls were excited for the opportunity to play against a good team. Unfortunately Mama said there’d be days like these as the Lady Vikings ran into a bit of a volleyball buzzsaw that evening as the Salado Eagles seemingly did no wrong. The first set was back and forth for about 20 points with both teams making big plays one after another. That's when the Eagles took off, taking all the Lady Vikings had to give, and threw it right back at em. The Lady Eagles seemingly made every dig and swing they needed to go on to win 25-15. The second set was much like the first with both teams going on short mini runs but neither really running away from each other over about 15 pts. There were some great points played by both teams. It really was fun volleyball to watch. That’s when once again, the Lady Eagles took off pressing all the right buttons on a night where they could do no wrong pulling away to win the second set 25 -11. The loss was tough but the girls know they played hard but weren’t able to overcome the powerful attacks from both the net and behind the service line of Salado. The Lady Vikings managed a few shining moments Monday evening but Salado was just in too good of form that night. Sometimes it’s just not your night and you tip your cap to the other team and say good job this time round, we’ll be ready for ya next time at our place! Current district record is 2-2. Overall the girls are 5-2 on the season.
Our girls have had another great week of practice and will be hosting Lampasas this next monday evening. Come out and support the Lady Vikings!
Stat leaders from Monday Night:
Aces: 3 - Leya Sund Kills: 4 - Amelia Ferguson; 2 - Kinsley Boyd, Sloane Wolfe
Assists: 5 - Leya Sund; 2 - Lila Rodriguez Digs: 4 - Lila Rodriguez, Leya Sund, Amelia Ferguson; 3 - Brinkley Gold; 2 - Rain Nelson

The 8th grade B team showed more improvement over the weekend in the Salado tourney. Although they walked away from the tournament with 1 win and 2 losses, there were lots of great plays made and great things seen.
We returned to Salado on Monday and faced a tough Salado B team. The first set got off to a rocky start, but our girls fought hard and picked it up towards the end. The second set, our girls started off very strong with great serving by Elena Prescott. Unfortunately, this was not enough as Salado was able to make up the deficit and then pull ahead to win. Outstanding play at the net was made by Liliana Wesselman and Emma Louw. Helping us out defensively with great passes were Summer Thatcher and Brookelyn Cushman.
Vikings Tangle With Eagles
On Thursday, the LVMS Football Vikings took the field vs the Salado MS Eagles at LVHS. There were three games on the night and all three were hard fought contests.
The Super B Team game was played by a combination of LVMS 7th and 8th graders vs a Salado B team of mostly 8th graders. The Lago Team battled hard and showed signs of growth in the second half in a 24-0 loss with solid performances by Carter Williams, Lester Gonzales, Austin Tarver, and the defensive player of the game - Artum Hordiienko. This was Artum's first American Football contest, as he is a transfer student from Ukraine.
In the 7th grade game, the Vikings were coming off a victory vs Marion and were looking to stay undefeated on the season. The 7th Eagles proved to be too much to handle for the Vikings in this early season contest. The eagles defeated the Vikings 22-0 despite the shut out efforts of the Vikings in the second half. The coaching staff is very pleased with the defense in the second half of the game and their response to halftime adjustments. The Viking Offense could not sustain drives against the stout Eagle Defense. However, the coaches agree that this group has the ability to grow as the season continues.
In the night cap, the LVMS 8th Vikings had a tough Salado team to deal with. The challenge was accepted and the Vikings prevailed with a 40-16 victory over the Eagles. The score does not reflect how difficult this game really was. Salado was very talented and well coached. The Eagles led at halftime 15-12 and had all the momentum going into the second half. In the second half the Viking Defense made a critical stop and scored on their first possession of the half. The Vikings then took control of the game after a defensive strip by Levi Castro. The entire team played well. Everyone took their jobs seriously and executed to the very best of their ability. The offense, led by quarterback Eason Rice and Co. have put up 40 plus points in all 3 of their games this season, and the defense has given up a total of 16 points in three games. The 8th Vikings are now 3-0 on the season and 1-0 in district play.
The Vikings will play their second district game next Thursday, in Jarrell, with the hopes of staying undefeated on the season, and one step closer to a district title.

Strive for 5!
In addition to missed learning opportunities, many parents also may not realize that our school's funding from the State is directly tied to daily attendance. Each day your child is present, the school receives about $37. While $37 might not seem significant on its own, it adds up quickly. Last year, the District's funding was reduced by over $700,000 due to student absences. This loss of funds impacts our ability to hire more teachers, reduce class sizes, and further enhance the learning environment for all students.
We appreciate your help in reducing avoidable absences so that your child — and all of our students — can take full advantage of the excellent instruction we offer every day.

Vaping = DAEP
HB 114 makes offenses involving the possession and/or or use of vapes a mandatory DAEP offense. School districts will now be required to place all students who are caught in possession and/or or using vapes (of any kind – not just those with drugs) into their DAEP.
Please share this with your children - it's just not worth it!
