Tēnā koutou katoa
Ngā mihi nui, kia koutou katoa - Warm greetings to you all.
Thank you to the parents and friends who made it a priority in their busy day and were able to come along to our Matariki breakfast celebration; it was a wonderful way to start the day, with kai and performances.
- we are so grateful to the many parents who volunteered their time and expertise for the breakfast and throughout the day sharing about their culture and traditions and a shared lunch, as we embarked on a day of learning a little bit more about each other. Without your support these events would be impossible to host
- it was fantastic to see so many ex TPS students and student leaders from TGC and TBC help out with toast making and Milo pouring
- thank you to Lauren Stull and the TIS students who came to share their Pasifika culture with our students
- thank you to Pak 'nSave who helped us to provide a free breakfast for all the children
Lastly, an especially BIG THANK YOU to Kelly Savage who coordinated the day and made sure it was one to remember for our learners, I know there was a lot of work behind the scenes to make this all happen so seamlessly. Also thank you to Kylie Rae who was the MC for the morning, as always, she was full of fun and positive energy and kept the morning rolling along.

This term I have surveyed a sample of year 3 to 6 students (21%) to gain a measure of student engagement. I do this every year as one tool to check the 'health' of our school culture from the children's perspective. The children are asked a variety of questions to which they can respond with either Strongly Agree, Agree, Disagree or Strongly Disagree. As a board we were very pleased with the responses.
Below is a summary of the strongly agree and agree responses to the questions asked.
Emotional Engagement:
- I like being at school. 98% either strongly agreed or agreed with this statement
- I feel safe at school. 100%
- My teacher(s) know(s) me well. 98%
- At TPS the adults care about students. 100%
- I have good friends at school. 98%
- I try hard to do my best at school. 100%
- When I face a challenge at school, I know how to get help or have strategies to solve it. 97%
- I feel confident to use mindfulness to help me when I feel anxious or facing a challenge. 93%
- The learning I do at school is interesting and useful. 100%
- I have some choice about what I am learning. 91%
- My parents think that school is important. 100%
- I like to get involved with things going on at school. e.g. swimming sports, x-country, choir, classroom helping jobs, production, etc. 97%
- I always try to follow the class/school rules. 100%

This week we farewell three members of TPS staff:
- Jason Morgan, the middle team leader, has won the Deputy Principal position at Pillans Point School. This is a very well deserved promotion and he will commence his new role in Term 3.
- Whaea Jen Batista will start her maternity leave on Friday, we wish her well in her next big role as a Mama.
- Aimee Daniels, who has worked as a teacher aide with us for the last nine months in the junior school.
Thank you for the significant contributions you have each made to our school and learners. You will all be missed.

Stewart Ngatai, has resigned from our BOT due to work commitments. Stewart bought expertise to our board with his extensive background in the health sector, governance roles and as mana whenua. The board would like to co-opt a member who is mana whenua and has a strong interest in supporting our school in the future. Active participation by whānau Māori in planning, development and delivery of education services will help us to ensure that what we do at TPS is appropriate and effective for ākonga Māori. If you have any interest in finding out more about this role please contact me.

We have requested that the Tauranga Primary School area be visited regularly by Travel Safe and TCC Parking to help maintain safety for all children using the area. Parking correctly and safe driving practices are important for ensuring our children can travel to and from school safely.

TPS is selling Oxford Pies again this year, and have added an option for Lamingtons. This is a fundraising opportunity for the school. Funds raised will be utilised to update our school bike shed as it needs a new roof and some serious internal refurbishment. Pies are $11 each and Lamingtons $8 for a pack of 6. I can personally vouch for the quality and taste of both the pies and Lamingtons and I will definitely be ordering some for the Hawes family freezer 😋.

We would like to give a big thank you to Keryn Jarvis and Baker Tilly Staples Rodway for sponsoring the cost of Life Education Trust to visit out school next term. Keryn is a trustee of Life Education Trust, an associate of accounting firm - Baker Tilly Staples Rodway, and a Mum of a student at our school. Keryn wanted to see Harold the Giraffe visit our school to teach the kids some important life lessons so approached Baker Tilly to sponsor the 9 ½ days that we require to get all classes through the classroom.
Life Education along with educator Chantelle, and Harold, will be visiting the school from 5th August - 16th August. Each class will visit the mobile classroom twice to learn about our chosen topic of 'What's Inside our Bodies?'. During the Life Education sessions students will learn about the following body systems; circulatory, nervous, digestive and respiratory. They will develop an understanding of how these body systems work together to keep us alive and the function of each part that's involved in these body systems.
Thank you so much to Keryn Jarvis and Baker Tilly Staples Rodway for supporting our school.
